AUMA SQEx 12.2 Explosion-Proof Part-Turn Actuator

Description

Overview

AUMA SQEx 12.2 is the explosion-proof actuator for large quarter-turn valves, with a tripping torque window of 400 Nm to 1,200 Nm. The run torque for 15 minutes is 315 Nm at the two fastest ratios, where tripping torque is limited to 900 Nm, and 420 Nm at the slower ratios with the full 1,200 Nm. These numbers define the frame’s role: large valves in hazardous areas that move slowly and deliberately.

Seven Star LLC, the official trusted supplier and regional supplier for AUMA, supplies the AUMA SQEx 12.2 to oil and gas and petrochemical projects across Oman and the GCC. For large valves on export lines and process headers, we confirm torque data and marking early so the drive is released with the rest of the valve package.

Large Valves in Classified Areas

A big valve in a classified area carries two constraints at once: high torque and a limit on motor heating. For the AUMA SQEx 12.2, AUMA documents operating times of 11, 16, 22, 32, 45, 63, 84 and 125 seconds at 50 Hz. At 11 s and 16 s the maximum tripping torque is 900 Nm with 315 Nm run torque; at 22 s and slower the figures are 1,200 Nm and 420 Nm. The speed therefore has to be chosen against the valve’s running torque, not just its seat torque.

The motor is a 3-phase squirrel-cage unit with PTC thermistors for protection and short-time duty S2 – 15 min, classes A and B. Starts are limited to 60 per hour. The worm gear is self-locking at standstill, and a handwheel with 22 or 30 turns per 90 degrees provides manual setting. When a valve requires a fast trip, the stored-energy FQMEx fail-safe unit is the better route than a faster ratio on this frame.

Engineering Design of the AUMA SQEx 12.2

The AUMA SQEx 12.2 has an EN ISO 5211 F12 standard flange with F14 option and a coupling for shafts up to 50 mm cylindrical, 36 mm square and 41 mm two-flat. The 200 mm handwheel does not rotate during electrical operation. The swing angle is adjustable between 75 and just under 105 degrees as standard, with additional optional ranges.

Weight is about 38 kg, or 46 kg with base and lever, so lifting equipment should be planned for installation. Connection is via the AUMA Ex plug/socket connector (KT) with the KES variant optional, and IP68 protection applies with a double-sealed terminal compartment. Cable entries are metric as standard, with Pg, NPT and G threads available as options to suit the project’s glands.

Key Features

The AUMA SQEx 12.2 pairs high torque with documented explosion protection.

  • A 400 Nm to 1,200 Nm tripping range with 315 Nm run torque at 11 s and 16 s and 420 Nm beyond.
  • Operating times from 11 s to 125 s allow slow, controlled closing of large valves.
  • Certified under DEKRA 13ATEX0016 X for the standard gas and dust markings.
  • F12 standard flange with F14 option and 50 mm cylindrical shaft capacity.
  • A 200 mm handwheel with 22 or 30 turns for 90 degrees gives deliberate manual setting.
  • Metric cable entries as standard, with Pg, NPT or G threads on request to suit certified glands.
  • Optional motor heaters and PTC thermistor protection for demanding duty.
  • Works with AMExC or ACExC controls; the FQMEx 12.1 fail-safe unit covers emergency tripping.

Selection Guidance for the AUMA SQEx 12.2

The AUMA SQEx 12.2 is often ordered as part of a valve package, so synchronise the ordering with the valve supplier. The valve manufacturer needs the final flange and coupling data, and the actuator manufacturer needs the valve torque curve. Exchanging these early avoids the common situation where a large valve arrives without a matching coupling bore.

For hazardous-area service, document the marking you expect and compare it to the name plate on delivery. If a different version, such as the optional II 2G Ex db IIC marking, is required, state it in the enquiry. Allow time for the factory to build the actuator to order, and avoid late changes to voltage or marking, which are the most common causes of a missed delivery date on explosion-proof orders.

Industrial Applications

The AUMA SQEx 12.2 serves large butterfly and ball valves at crude oil terminals, gas export lines and big process headers inside classified areas, where torque requirements exceed those of the mid-size frames. Marine terminals and tank farms in the Sultanate use similar valves, and slow, controlled closing is often a design requirement to limit surge in long loading lines.

Seven Star LLC supplies the SQEx 12.2 together with regional engineering support.

The neighbouring Ex frames are the AUMA SQEx 10.2 and AUMA SQEx 14.2.

See the AUMA SQEx explosion-proof part-turn actuator page for the family, the AUMA SQ part-turn actuator range for non-hazardous service and the AUMA GS part-turn gearboxes for additional torque.

About brand
Electric actuators for industrial valves are the core of AUMA's business. Founded in 1964 and based in Müllheim, Germany, the company builds multi-turn, part-turn and linear actuators with matching gearboxes and actuator controls, in modular combinations that are fixed at the time of order. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing AUMA actuators, gearboxes, fail-safe units and the SIMA2 master station for valve automation projects and replacements in Oman and the GCC.

AUMA actuator and gearbox types

SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line. Special items include the seawater-resistant SGM and SGMR part-turn actuators with bronze housings, the SVC and SVCR globe valve actuators and the FQM fail-safe unit. Integral controls come as AM or AC versions.

Where AUMA electric actuators are used

AUMA actuators are found in water, power, oil and gas, marine and general industry. In practice that means isolation and control valves in water treatment and pumping stations, power plant steam and cooling systems, tank farms and pipelines, and sluice gates and dampers.

Ordering AUMA actuators and parts: what we need

For a replacement send photos of the actuator, motor and controls nameplates: type, order number, serial number and wiring diagram number. For a new actuator we need:
  • valve type, required torque or thrust, and turns or stroke
  • valve mounting flange and stem or shaft details
  • output speed, duty (open-close or modulating)
  • supply voltage and frequency, control signals or fieldbus
  • enclosure protection, ambient temperature, Ex requirement
