AUMA SQ 12.2 Part-Turn Electric Actuator
Overview
AUMA SQ 12.2 is the fourth frame in the SQ .2 range and the first in which the valve shaft opening reaches 50 mm. The tripping torque is adjustable between 400 Nm and 1,200 Nm, and the standard flange is EN ISO 5211 F12 with F14 as an option. This is the size usually chosen for large butterfly valves on transmission mains and for big ball valves where the seating torque is well above what the mid-size frames deliver.
Seven Star LLC is the official trusted supplier and regional supplier for AUMA, and we supply the AUMA SQ 12.2 to water authorities, power producers and process plants in Oman and the GCC. For large valves, getting the torque sizing right matters more than anywhere else, so our team works from the valve datasheet to confirm margins before quoting.
Slow Strokes for Large Valves
Large valves are rarely closed quickly, because closing a big pipeline fast creates pressure surges. The AUMA SQ 12.2 reflects that: its operating times begin at 11 seconds and extend to 125 seconds for a 90 degree stroke at 50 Hz, with intermediate values of 16, 22, 32, 45, 63 and 84 seconds. At the two fastest ratios, 11 s and 16 s, the maximum tripping torque is held to 900 Nm, while the slower ratios from 22 s release the full 1,200 Nm.
Motor power ranges from 0.04 kW on the slowest ratio to 0.19 kW on the fastest, using AUMA’s three-phase squirrel-cage motors with thermoswitches as standard protection. The worm gear is self-locking at standstill, so line pressure cannot back-drive the valve. The minimum torque setting is 400 Nm, which means this frame is not intended for valves whose operating torque is below that value. Those belong on the SQ 10.2 or smaller frames, where the tripping window starts lower.
Engineering Design of the AUMA SQ 12.2
The coupling of the AUMA SQ 12.2 accepts shafts up to 50 mm cylindrical, 36 mm square and 41 mm two-flat, matching the stems of large butterfly valves. The 200 mm handwheel needs either 22 or 30 turns for 90 degrees, a clear increase over the 11 or 15 turns of the 10.2, which reflects the higher gear reduction needed for the torque class. Operators should keep this in mind when planning manual emergency closure.
The unit weighs about 35 kg including unbored coupling and handwheel, or 43 kg with base and lever, which means lifting equipment is advisable on elevated valve platforms. Enclosure protection is IP68 and the KS coating system is standard. AUMA’s DC motor technical data covers frames up to 10.2 only, so applications needing a DC supply at this torque should be discussed with our engineers at the enquiry stage.
Key Features
Large-valve duty drives the design of the AUMA SQ 12.2, with features that favour controlled movement and sturdy mechanics.
- Tripping torque from 400 Nm to 1,200 Nm for large butterfly valves and heavy ball valves.
- Eight operating times from 11 s to 125 s protect long pipelines from hydraulic transients.
- A 900 Nm limit at the 11 s and 16 s ratios and 1,200 Nm from 22 s upward gives a clear speed-versus-torque rule.
- EN ISO 5211 F12 standard and F14 option flanges suit valves of this size class.
- Shaft capacity up to 50 mm cylindrical accepts large stems without custom couplings.
- A 200 mm handwheel with 22 or 30 turns per 90 degrees allows slow manual operation at high torque.
- IP68 enclosure protection with KS coating withstands harsh coastal and desert environments.
- Compatible with AM and AC actuator controls, with fieldbus and non-intrusive setting options.
Selection Guidance for the AUMA SQ 12.2
Selecting the AUMA SQ 12.2 deserves a structural check as well as a torque check. A valve needing close to 1,200 Nm imposes large reaction forces on the bracket and the valve neck, so the mounting flange and the valve stem should be confirmed by the valve manufacturer for the intended actuator mass of about 35 to 43 kg. The speed choice also interacts with the torque limit, so a valve with a high seating torque should not be ordered with the 11 s or 16 s ratio.
For a long pipeline, estimate the surge from the closing time and confirm it with the hydraulic designer. If the designer asks for a closing time longer than 125 s, the standard ratios of this frame are not enough, and a variable-speed solution should be discussed with the instrumentation division at the enquiry stage.
Industrial Applications
The AUMA SQ 12.2 typically serves valves on large cooling water circuits, seawater intake lines, and trunk water mains where a slow, controlled stroke is a design requirement. In power stations it is used on circulation and service water butterfly valves, and in refineries on heavier utility headers. Because its fastest ratio is 11 seconds, it is not meant for rapid-trip isolation, a role that smaller frames or the fail-safe FQM unit serve better.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC provides the SQ 12.2 to EPC contractors and operators in Muscat, Sohar and Salalah, with regional warehouse support. Planning engineers frequently compare it with its neighbours.
General information is on the AUMA SQ part-turn actuator range page, the AUMA MATIC AM/AC integral actuator controls provide integral control options, and the AUMA GS part-turn gearboxes cover torque beyond the range.
