Brand:

AUMA SAEx 40.1 Explosion-Proof Multi-Turn Actuator

Description

Overview

AUMA SAEx 40.1 is the largest SAEx frame on the data sheet, with 5,000–16,000 Nm (S2-15 min) tripping torque, an F40 flange and a 500 mm handwheel.

Seven Star LLC supplies the SAEx 40.1 as trusted AUMA supplier to heavy-industry projects in Oman and the GCC. As the largest Ex frame in the series, it is normally discussed with our Muscat team before the valve order is placed. Operating Principle of the AUMA SAEx 40.1

With 5,000 to 16,000 Nm, the SAEx 40.1 is the heaviest Ex multi-turn frame in this series. A 3-phase AC motor and reduction gear drive the output, counter gears set the stroke and torque switches trip in both directions. Self-locking applies up to 22 rpm; from 32 rpm it does not, and AMExC or ACExC controls are required.

Engineering Design of the AUMA SAEx 40.1

At 515 kg, the SAEx 40.1 demands lifting equipment, a rated support structure and detailed planning of the valve-yoke connection. Its reduction ratios of 184 : 1 to 64 : 1 make manual operation slow, so a power tool for emergency operation should be considered. Verify the F40 flange and the 175 mm stem bore, and agree the output speed in advance because torque falls from 16,000 Nm to 10,000 Nm as speed rises from 22 to 45 rpm.

Cabling uses direct terminal connection and a separate motor compartment; IP67 is standard, IP68 is available, and the motor heater is rated 12.5 to 25 W.

Key Features of the AUMA SAEx 40.1

Headline data of the SAEx 40.1, as documented by AUMA:

  • Tripping torque of 5,000 to 16,000 Nm (S2-15 min) and up to 11,200 Nm at S2-30 min.
  • Run torque staged from 5,600 Nm to 3,000 Nm (S2-15 min) as output speed rises.
  • Output speeds of 4–45 rpm at 50 Hz, with up to 20 starts per hour.
  • Approximate weight of 515 kg and 500 mm handwheel.
  • 7.5–30 kW motors at 400 V draw 30–65 A nominal current.

Selecting the AUMA SAEx 40.1 for Your Valve

The SAEx 40.1 is the largest size of the AUMA SAEx explosion-proof multi-turn range. It delivers 5,000 to 16,000 Nm on an F40 flange with a 175 mm stem capacity, weighs 515 kg and offers speeds from 4 to 45 rpm only. Torque is staged at 16,000 Nm up to 22 rpm, 14,000 Nm at 32 rpm and 10,000 Nm at 45 rpm, so the fastest speed cannot be combined with the full torque. With a limit of 20 starts per hour, this frame is intended for large, rarely operated isolation valves.

The SAEx 40.1 doubles the top torque of the SAEx 35.1, from 8,000 to 16,000 Nm, with an F40 flange, a 175 mm stem and a 500 mm handwheel. It is the last size in the SAEx series on the data sheet.

AUMA SAEx 40.1 Torque and Speed Data

These are the torque limits of the SAEx 40.1 by output speed, valid at nominal voltage and +40 °C. Illustrative calculation, not AUMA data: a valve needing 100 turns per stroke takes 1,500 s at 4 rpm, 375 s at 16 rpm and 133 s at 45 rpm.

Output speed, rpm Trip torque, S2-15 / S2-30 min, Nm Run torque, S2-15 / S2-30 min, Nm
4–11 16,000 / 11,200 5,600 / 2,800
16–22 16,000 / 11,200 4,800 / 2,400
32 14,000 / 9,800 4,000 / 2,000
45 10,000 / 7,000 3,000 / 1,500

Worked Sizing Example for the SAEx 40.1 (Illustrative Calculation)

A very large pipeline valve is rated at 12,500 Nm to seat and 3,500 Nm to run. The SAEx 40.1 provides 16,000 Nm up to 22 rpm and 14,000 Nm at 32 rpm, with run torque of 4,800 Nm at 16 to 22 rpm and 4,000 Nm at 32 rpm, so 22 rpm or 32 rpm would both be acceptable. At 45 rpm the tripping torque falls to 10,000 Nm and the run torque to 3,000 Nm, which no longer covers the valve. This is an illustrative calculation, not AUMA data.

Industrial Applications

The AUMA SAEx 40.1 is the top size for the largest hazardous-area valves, such as main pipeline isolation valves, large storage-tank block valves and heavy process valves where torque requirements reach 16,000 Nm. It is selected on strategic installations where a failed manual operation would be unacceptable.

Few plants in the region need this frame, so projects require early engineering coordination. Seven Star LLC, a trusted supplier of AUMA products in Oman and the GCC, can provide quotations, delivery planning and documentation for the SAEx 40.1.

About brand
Electric actuators for industrial valves are the core of AUMA's business. Founded in 1964 and based in Müllheim, Germany, the company builds multi-turn, part-turn and linear actuators with matching gearboxes and actuator controls, in modular combinations that are fixed at the time of order. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing AUMA actuators, gearboxes, fail-safe units and the SIMA2 master station for valve automation projects and replacements in Oman and the GCC.

AUMA actuator and gearbox types

SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line. Special items include the seawater-resistant SGM and SGMR part-turn actuators with bronze housings, the SVC and SVCR globe valve actuators and the FQM fail-safe unit. Integral controls come as AM or AC versions.

Where AUMA electric actuators are used

AUMA actuators are found in water, power, oil and gas, marine and general industry. In practice that means isolation and control valves in water treatment and pumping stations, power plant steam and cooling systems, tank farms and pipelines, and sluice gates and dampers.

Ordering AUMA actuators and parts: what we need

For a replacement send photos of the actuator, motor and controls nameplates: type, order number, serial number and wiring diagram number. For a new actuator we need:
  • valve type, required torque or thrust, and turns or stroke
  • valve mounting flange and stem or shaft details
  • output speed, duty (open-close or modulating)
  • supply voltage and frequency, control signals or fieldbus
  • enclosure protection, ambient temperature, Ex requirement
