AUMA SAEx 16.2 Explosion-Proof Multi-Turn Actuator
Description
Overview
AUMA SAEx 16.2 closes the group IIC part of the SAEx range at sixth place: 400–1,000 Nm (S2-15 min) on an EN ISO 5210 F16 flange with a 500 mm handwheel.
The SAEx 16.2 is supplied across Oman and the GCC by Seven Star LLC, a trusted AUMA supplier, from quotation to start-up advice. Larger projects around Duqm and Sohar can combine it with matching AMExC or ACExC controls in one order. Operating Principle of the AUMA SAEx 16.2
Inside the SAEx 16.2, motor torque passes through a reduction gear to the output drive while mechanical limit and torque switching guard the valve. The 1,000 Nm ceiling holds up to 90 rpm and eases to 800 Nm at 125 and 180 rpm. Self-locking is documented for speeds up to 90 rpm only.
Engineering Design of the SAEx 16.2
The SAEx 16.2 has three weight classes (72, 83 and 88 kg), so confirm the speed ratio before preparing lifting plans. Its 500 mm handwheel is the largest in the 07.2 to 16.2 family and needs clearance on the valve platform. Set the tripping torque with the 1,000 Nm limit in mind, and remember that only speeds up to 90 rpm deliver the full 1,000 Nm.
Electrical connection is made through an AUMA Ex plug/socket connector (KT) with spring-clamp control terminals, within an IP68 enclosure; the optional motor heater is 12.5 W.
Key Features of the AUMA SAEx 16.2
Data points that matter most when specifying the AUMA SAEx 16.2:
- Tripping torque of 400 to 1,000 Nm (S2-15 min) and up to 710 Nm at S2-30 min.
- Permitted run torque begins at 330 Nm and ends at 140 Nm for S2-15 min, depending on speed.
- 60 starts per hour at output speeds of 4–180 rpm (50 Hz).
- A 500 mm handwheel; weight 72 kg (4–22 rpm), 83 kg (32–45 rpm), 88 kg (63–180 rpm).
- Motor ratings of 0.40–6.00 kW (400 V) with 1.4–14 A nominal current.
Selecting the AUMA SAEx 16.2 for Your Valve
The SAEx 16.2 closes the 07.2 to 16.2 family with 1,000 Nm tripping torque, an F16 flange, a 77 mm stem capacity and a 500 mm handwheel. It is the first size where the table splits into three weight classes (72, 83 and 88 kg), so the speed chosen changes the lifting weight. Above 90 rpm the maximum tripping torque falls to 800 Nm, and the run torque falls from 330 Nm at the slowest speeds to 140 Nm at 180 rpm. Valves above 1,000 Nm require the 25.1 frame, which uses a different flange pattern and a different Ex group.
With 400 to 1,000 Nm, an F16 flange and a 77 mm stem, the SAEx 16.2 closes the group IIC range. The step up to the SAEx 25.1 changes the gas group to IIB, the enclosure to IP67 and the starts limit to 40 per hour.
AUMA SAEx 16.2 Torque and Speed Data
AUMA publishes these limits for the AUMA SAEx 16.2 at nominal voltage and +40 °C ambient temperature. Illustrative calculation, not AUMA data: a valve needing 50 turns per stroke takes 273 s at 11 rpm, 48 s at 63 rpm and 17 s at 180 rpm.
| Output speed, rpm | Trip torque, S2-15 / S2-30 min, Nm | Run torque, S2-15 / S2-30 min, Nm |
|---|---|---|
| 4–11 | 1,000 / 710 | 330 / 170 |
| 16–22 | 1,000 / 710 | 300 / 150 |
| 32–45 | 1,000 / 710 | 200 / 100 |
| 63–90 | 1,000 / 710 | 160 / 80 |
| 125 | 800 / 570 | 150 / 75 |
| 180 | 800 / 570 | 140 / 70 |
Worked Sizing Example for the SAEx 16.2 (Illustrative Calculation)
Suppose an export-line block valve requires 780 Nm to seat and 250 Nm to run. The SAEx 16.2 delivers 1,000 Nm at speeds up to 90 rpm, but run torque falls with speed: 330 Nm up to 11 rpm and 160 Nm at 63 to 90 rpm. At 63 rpm the 250 Nm running requirement therefore exceeds the 160 Nm run torque, while at 22 rpm the 300 Nm run torque is adequate. This kind of check is why the speed must be selected together with the torque. This is an illustrative calculation, not AUMA data.

Explosion Protection and Installation Notes for the AUMA SAEx 16.2
Standard ATEX markings of the SAEx 16.2 per AUMA: II 2G Ex db eb IIC T4 or T3 Gb, II 2G Ex h IIC T4 or T3 Gb and II 2D Ex tb IIIC T130 °C or T190 °C Db. Certificate: DEKRA 11ATEX0008 X. Confirm temperature class and zone on the nameplate.
The certificate DEKRA 11ATEX0008 X covers all SAEx frames from 07.2 to 16.2, so the group IIC claim applies to this size as listed on the data sheet. Humidity of up to 100 % relative is permitted across the whole temperature range.
Industrial Applications
The AUMA SAEx 16.2 serves large gate valves on pipeline stations, big tank-farm isolation valves and major process block valves where 1,000 Nm is required. The F16 flange and 77 mm stem capacity suit large rising-stem valves, and the valve manufacturer’s torque data always governs sizing.
In Oman’s oil and gas industry such actuators operate pump-station isolation, export-terminal valves and process-train block valves in Zone 1 and Zone 2 areas. Seven Star LLC quotes the SAEx 16.2 as part of full valve-automation packages with Ex-rated controls for projects in Duqm, Sohar and Salalah.

About brand
Electric actuators for industrial valves are the core of AUMA's business. Founded in 1964 and based in Müllheim, Germany, the company builds multi-turn, part-turn and linear actuators with matching gearboxes and actuator controls, in modular combinations that are fixed at the time of order.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing AUMA actuators, gearboxes, fail-safe units and the SIMA2 master station for valve automation projects and replacements in Oman and the GCC.
AUMA actuator and gearbox types
SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line. Special items include the seawater-resistant SGM and SGMR part-turn actuators with bronze housings, the SVC and SVCR globe valve actuators and the FQM fail-safe unit. Integral controls come as AM or AC versions.Where AUMA electric actuators are used
AUMA actuators are found in water, power, oil and gas, marine and general industry. In practice that means isolation and control valves in water treatment and pumping stations, power plant steam and cooling systems, tank farms and pipelines, and sluice gates and dampers.Ordering AUMA actuators and parts: what we need
