AUMA SQR 12.2 Modulating Part-Turn Actuator
Description
Overview
AUMA SQR 12.2 is the modulating version of the high-torque SQ 12.2 and offers a tripping torque of 600 Nm to 1,200 Nm. The maximum modulating torque is 600 Nm at S4 – 25 % and 420 Nm at S4 – 50 %, figures that make it suitable for large control butterfly valves in water transmission and cooling circuits. The minimum tripping setting of 600 Nm is double that of the SQR 10.2, which tells you the frame is not meant for light valves.
Seven Star LLC supplies the AUMA SQR 12.2 throughout Oman and the GCC. Large control valves are long-lead items, so we work with customers in Muscat, Sohar and Salalah early to align the actuator, controls and valve documentation.
Slow, Precise Motion at High Torque
Large valves in a control loop need both muscle and finesse. The AUMA SQR 12.2 provides operating times of 16, 22, 32, 45, 63, 84 and 125 seconds for 90 degrees at 50 Hz. At the fastest 16 s ratio the figures are reduced: tripping torque is limited to 900 Nm, S4 – 50 % maximum to 630 Nm and modulating torque to 450 Nm at S4 – 25 % and 315 Nm at S4 – 50 %. From 22 s and slower the full ratings of 1,200 Nm, 840 Nm, 600 Nm and 420 Nm apply.
The minimum pulse on reversal ranges from 180 ms at 16 s to 1,100 ms at 125 s, so a slower ratio gives a coarser minimum correction. With 1,500 permitted starts per hour and a 50 ms same-direction pulse, the drive can follow a controller smoothly, but designers should choose the slowest ratio the process allows to reduce wear and avoid hunting. The S4 – 50 % option is available at every ratio of this frame.
Engineering Design of the AUMA SQR 12.2
The coupling of the AUMA SQR 12.2 takes shafts up to 50 mm cylindrical, 36 mm square and 41 mm two-flat, and the standard F12 flange with F14 option matches large butterfly valve bodies. The 200 mm handwheel needs 22 or 30 turns for a quarter turn, so manual positioning is deliberate and slow, a trait that suits setting and emergency use.
Weight is approximately 35 kg for the standard unit and 43 kg with base and lever, so lifting equipment is recommended. IP68 enclosure protection and KS corrosion protection are standard. The AUMA data reviewed for this frame covers 3-phase and 1-phase AC supply, and the unit pairs with AM or AC controls to provide the analogue or fieldbus positioning interface the loop requires.
Key Features
The AUMA SQR 12.2 brings modulating duty to the large-valve end of the SQ .2 range.
- A tripping torque of 600 Nm to 1,200 Nm with up to 600 Nm modulating torque suits large control valves.
- Seven operating times from 16 s to 125 s allow gentle control of big pipelines.
- A reduced rating at 16 s (900 Nm trip, 450 Nm modulating) is clearly documented, so the speed choice can be made safely.
- Up to 1,500 starts per hour and a 50 ms pulse enable responsive positioning.
- F12/F14 flanges and 50 mm shafts match large butterfly valve interfaces.
- A 200 mm handwheel with 22 or 30 turns gives controlled manual operation.
- IP68 and KS protection suit marine and desert environments.
- AM and AC controls add fieldbus, data logging and diagnostics.
Selection Guidance for the AUMA SQR 12.2
For the AUMA SQR 12.2, the main sizing check is the modulating torque of 600 Nm at S4 – 25 %, which should exceed the valve’s torque under flow with margin. A large butterfly valve under high differential pressure can see a torque peak somewhere in mid-travel, and if that peak is close to the modulating limit, the S4 – 25 % duty rating is at risk.
Tune the controller conservatively. The minimum reversal pulse of 180 ms to 1,100 ms indicates how long the motor must be powered before the output moves, so a controller deadband narrower than the actuator’s step resolution will cause hunting.
Industrial Applications
The AUMA SQR 12.2 is used on control butterfly valves in seawater intake and discharge systems, large chilled-water headers, and water treatment plant inlet control. Power stations use it for cooling-water flow regulation and turbine hall auxiliary systems. Because it holds position with a self-locking gear train and corrects in small steps, it is a good match for pressure-control valves that must hold a setpoint through changing demand.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC delivers the SQR 12.2 to EPC contractors, utilities and industrial operators across the GCC.
Next to it in the range are the AUMA SQR 10.2 and AUMA SQR 14.2.
For open-close valves see the AUMA SQ part-turn actuator range, for torque beyond this range see the AUMA GS part-turn gearboxes, and for integral controls see the AUMA MATIC AM/AC integral actuator controls.

About brand
Electric actuators for industrial valves are the core of AUMA's business. Founded in 1964 and based in Müllheim, Germany, the company builds multi-turn, part-turn and linear actuators with matching gearboxes and actuator controls, in modular combinations that are fixed at the time of order.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing AUMA actuators, gearboxes, fail-safe units and the SIMA2 master station for valve automation projects and replacements in Oman and the GCC.
AUMA actuator and gearbox types
SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line. Special items include the seawater-resistant SGM and SGMR part-turn actuators with bronze housings, the SVC and SVCR globe valve actuators and the FQM fail-safe unit. Integral controls come as AM or AC versions.Where AUMA electric actuators are used
AUMA actuators are found in water, power, oil and gas, marine and general industry. In practice that means isolation and control valves in water treatment and pumping stations, power plant steam and cooling systems, tank farms and pipelines, and sluice gates and dampers.Ordering AUMA actuators and parts: what we need
