AUMA AMExC 01.1 Explosion-Proof Actuator Controls
Overview
The AUMA AMExC 01.1 (AUMA MATIC) is AUMA Riester’s explosion-proof actuator control unit for applications that need dependable open–close operation without the display and parametrisation depth of the AUMATIC range. It is mounted on SAEx/SAREx multi-turn and SQEx/SQREx part-turn actuators and provides integral local controls, motor switching and status signalling inside a certified housing that neither generates ignition sparks nor hot surface temperatures. Because most of the logic is hard-wired and the commissioning scope is small, it is a straightforward, cost-conscious choice for hazardous-area isolation valves.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC proudly supplies the AUMA AMExC 01.1 to customers across the Sultanate of Oman and the wider GCC. We help customers in the Sultanate of Oman choose between the simple AMExC and the display-based ACExC controls based on the real duty of each valve.
Operating Principle of the AUMA AMExC 01.1
The AUMA AMExC 01.1 evaluates the three operating commands OPEN, STOP and CLOSE received through opto-isolated digital inputs with a common reference, compares them with the limit and torque signals of the actuator and switches the motor through mechanically and electrically interlocked reversing contactors. Thyristor units are available as an option where a higher number of starts is expected. The seating type can be programmed as limit or torque seating for each end position, and the unit protects the valve against excessive torque across the entire travel.
Control logic is selectable between push-to-run operation and self-retaining operation, separately for REMOTE and LOCAL. Phase monitoring with automatic phase correction prevents wrong rotation if the supply phases are interchanged, and motor temperature is monitored through thermoswitches in the actuator motor, with an optional thermal overload relay or PTC tripping device. Torque faults can be excluded from the collective fault signal when the application requires it.
Engineering Design of the AUMA AMExC 01.1
The AUMA AMExC 01.1 is certified II2G Ex de IIC T4 or T3 Gb and II2D Ex tb IIIC T130 °C or T190 °C Db IP6x as standard, with an Ex d option, and carries the DEKRA certificates for use with SAEx and SQEx actuators together with FM and IECEx approvals. The enclosure achieves IP68, corrosion protection is KS, and the ambient temperature range is −40 °C to +40/+60 °C, a wider low-temperature window than the AUMATIC explosion-proof controls. Indoor and outdoor use is permitted, any mounting position is allowed and the installation altitude is up to 2,000 m above sea level.
The local controls consist of a selector switch LOCAL – OFF – REMOTE that is lockable in all positions, push buttons OPEN, STOP and CLOSE, and indication lights for end position CLOSED, collective fault and end position OPEN. A lockable protection cover is available as an option. Connection is through the AUMA Ex plug/socket connector (KT) with screw-type motor terminals and push-in control terminals, with KES terminal-block versions for Ex e or Ex d. Metric cable entry threads are standard; NPT and G threads are optional.
Key Features
The AUMA AMExC 01.1 concentrates on the functions that matter for reliable valve isolation in hazardous areas:
- Explosion-proof construction with ATEX, IECEx and FM approvals for combination with SAEx/SAREx and SQEx/SQREx actuators.
- Lockable selector switch and push buttons give clear, tamper-resistant local control at the valve.
- Programmable push-to-run or self-retaining logic for REMOTE and LOCAL operation suits both manual-style and automated sequences.
- Selectable limit or torque seating and overload protection across the whole travel protect valve stems and seats.
- Phase monitoring with automatic phase correction avoids wrong-direction travel after cabling changes.
- Five status output contacts including a collective fault change-over contact, with an optional blinker-based running indication.
- Optional fieldbus interface and optional 0/4–20 mA position feedback when the actuator carries an electronic position transmitter.
- Safe end position feedback up to SIL 2 in selected configurations.
Industrial Applications
Many hazardous-area valves in Oman only need to open and close reliably on command: tank isolation valves in fuel depots, loading-arm valves, fire-water and foam system valves, and sectionalising valves along gas and condensate lines. For these services the AUMA AMExC 01.1 delivers explosion-proof electric actuation without paying for features that will never be used. Typical sites include terminals and refineries at Sohar and Duqm, LPG and fuel storage near Muscat, and industrial zones in Salalah where classified areas coexist with salt-laden coastal air.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the AUMA AMExC 01.1 with matching SAEx and SQEx actuators, protection covers, wall brackets and plug/socket connectors. For plants that later need diagnostics, display-based commissioning or modulating duty, the upgrade path to the ACExC 01.2 controls remains open on the same actuator family. If the AUMA AMExC 01.1 is not the closest fit for a valve, see the AUMA MATIC AM/AC integral actuator controls, the AUMA ACExC 01.2 or the AUMA SQEx explosion-proof part-turn actuator for alternatives from the same AUMA family.

AUMA actuator and gearbox types
SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line. Special items include the seawater-resistant SGM and SGMR part-turn actuators with bronze housings, the SVC and SVCR globe valve actuators and the FQM fail-safe unit. Integral controls come as AM or AC versions.Where AUMA electric actuators are used
AUMA actuators are found in water, power, oil and gas, marine and general industry. In practice that means isolation and control valves in water treatment and pumping stations, power plant steam and cooling systems, tank farms and pipelines, and sluice gates and dampers.Ordering AUMA actuators and parts: what we need
For a replacement send photos of the actuator, motor and controls nameplates: type, order number, serial number and wiring diagram number. For a new actuator we need:- valve type, required torque or thrust, and turns or stroke
