AUMA SARV Variable-Speed Modulating Multi-Turn Actuator

Description

Overview

AUMA SARV multi-turn actuators are designed for modulating duty, where a valve must be repositioned continuously by a controller and settle accurately on each setpoint. They extend the proven AUMA SAR range with variable speed: paired with ACV 01.2 actuator controls, the AUMA SARV offers a speed control ratio of 1:10 and is rated for class C duty (S4 – 25 %, with S4 – 50 % available) according to EN ISO 22153. Torque ranges from 15 Nm to 1,000 Nm across six sizes, SARV 07.2 to SARV 16.2, with up to 1,500 starts per hour.

In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC proudly supplies the AUMA SARV to control-valve and process automation projects across the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC. Our Muscat instrumentation team supports sizing, selection of the controls and fieldbus interface, and delivery of genuine AUMA equipment with full manufacturer documentation.

Modulating Operating Principle of the AUMA SARV

A fixed-speed modulating actuator reaches its setpoint in a series of short, abrupt pulses that overshoot or hunt around the target. The AUMA SARV behaves differently. The actuator reduces its operating speed continuously as it approaches the valve setpoint, down to zero speed, which allows a more accurate approach than the sudden tripping of a fixed-speed drive. AUMA states a positioning accuracy of better than 0.2 %, and the ability is described as particularly crucial for the SARV modulating model. Fast travel towards the target and a slow, precise final approach are combined in the same movement.

Speed is produced by the frequency converter inside the ACV 01.2 controls, which feeds a specially designed 3-phase AC motor from either a 1-phase or a 3-phase supply. Because the actuator speed is an additional variable, it can also be influenced from outside: the speed can be adjusted by an external input from the control system, giving the process controller one more degree of freedom to optimise a loop. The converter keeps torque available across the whole speed range and removes the high start-up currents of direct-on-line motors, which is important when the actuator starts and stops up to 1,500 times an hour.

Engineering Design of the AUMA SARV

The AUMA SARV uses the robust AUMA SAR .2 housing with limit and torque sensing, a handwheel for manual operation and an optional magnetic limit and torque transmitter for non-intrusive commissioning. Position feedback is available through a potentiometer or a 0/4–20 mA electronic position transmitter, and the controls can add the process controller (PID) function. Enclosure protection is IP68, corrosion protection KS with double-layer powder coating, and ambient temperature is –30 °C to +70 °C as standard; note that modulating duty is not possible while the actuator is immersed.

Valve attachment follows EN ISO 5210 from F07 to F16, with DIN 3210 options, and the electrical connection uses the AUMA plug/socket connector. Standard sizing is intermittent duty S4 – 25 % with an S4 – 50 % option, both at 100 % nominal voltage and +40 °C. The wide speed range is offered as 6–60, 12–120 and 24–240 rpm at 50 Hz, with only the 6–60 rpm version available for the largest SARV 16.2.

Key Features

The AUMA SARV adds the following capabilities to a conventional modulating actuator:

  • Continuous speed reduction on approach to the setpoint improves positioning accuracy and reduces hunting in closed-loop control.
  • A 1:10 speed control ratio lets the actuator follow fast process changes yet position slowly where precision is needed.
  • Class C modulating duty with up to 1,500 starts per hour on the smaller sizes supports demanding control loops.
  • An external speed setpoint from the distributed control system treats speed as an extra tuning variable in the loop.
  • Speed profiles for up to ten travel sections and soft start and stop reduce wear and pressure surges.
  • Separate EMERGENCY and failure speed setpoints define fast and safe behaviour on loss of signal.
  • Multiport valve operation positions up to 16 ports precisely, useful on manifold and sampling valves.
  • Fieldbus control, operation data logging, programmable output contacts and Bluetooth access are supported by the ACV 01.2 controls.

Industrial Applications

The AUMA SARV belongs on control valves where accuracy and valve life both matter: flow and level control in water treatment and desalination, pressure-reducing and flow-control valves on transmission mains, chemical dosing and blending lines, and cooling-water regulation in power and district cooling plants. In Oman these duties are common in the Sohar and Salalah industrial zones, in municipal water networks around Muscat and in petrochemical utilities, where a controller may issue a new setpoint every few seconds for years of continuous operation.

In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the AUMA SARV with the corresponding ACV 01.2 controls and fieldbus options. If the same valve needs only on-off or inching duty, the AUMA SAV is the better fit, and for explosion-proof modulating duty we can quote the AUMA SARVEx. Share your valve torque, stroke time and control signal with our team and we will recommend the right size. Because the AUMA SARV positions the valve through the ACV 01.2 controls rather than through a separate drive, a plant can combine fast travel with fine positioning in one device, and the AUMA SARV keeps its speed settings stored with the actuator when a valve is re-tuned. If the AUMA SARV is not the closest fit for a valve, see the AUMA SAV, the AUMA SARVEx or the AUMA SAREx modulating actuator for alternatives from the same AUMA family.

About brand
Electric actuators for industrial valves are the core of AUMA's business. Founded in 1964 and based in Müllheim, Germany, the company builds multi-turn, part-turn and linear actuators with matching gearboxes and actuator controls, in modular combinations that are fixed at the time of order. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing AUMA actuators, gearboxes, fail-safe units and the SIMA2 master station for valve automation projects and replacements in Oman and the GCC.

AUMA actuator and gearbox types

SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line. Special items include the seawater-resistant SGM and SGMR part-turn actuators with bronze housings, the SVC and SVCR globe valve actuators and the FQM fail-safe unit. Integral controls come as AM or AC versions.

Where AUMA electric actuators are used

AUMA actuators are found in water, power, oil and gas, marine and general industry. In practice that means isolation and control valves in water treatment and pumping stations, power plant steam and cooling systems, tank farms and pipelines, and sluice gates and dampers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the AUMA SARV improve modulating accuracy?
The AUMA SARV reduces its operating speed continuously as it nears the valve setpoint, down to zero speed, instead of tripping suddenly like a fixed-speed actuator. AUMA states a positioning accuracy of better than 0.2 %, which helps closed-loop control stay stable.
What duty class and starting frequency does the AUMA SARV support?
It is rated for class C modulating duty at S4 – 25 % as standard, with S4 – 50 % available as an option. The permissible number of starts reaches 1,500 per hour on the smaller sizes and 900 per hour on the SARV 16.2.
Which controls are required for the AUMA SARV?
The AUMA SARV is supplied with ACV 01.2 actuator controls, whose integral frequency converter provides variable speed. They also add the process controller (PID), fieldbus control, data logging and Bluetooth access.
Can the AUMA SARV speed be controlled by my DCS?
Yes. The actuator speed can be adjusted by an external input from the control system, so speed becomes an extra variable to optimise a control loop alongside the position setpoint.
Is Seven Star LLC a trusted supplier for AUMA products?
Yes. Seven Star LLC is the trusted supplier for AUMA in Oman and the GCC, supplying genuine AUMA actuators with manufacturer documentation, warranty and local technical support from Muscat.
