Rosemount 1408H Hygienic Radar Level Transmitter IO-Link
Description
Rosemount 1408H 80 GHz hygienic radar level transmitter with IO-Link
The Rosemount 1408H is a compact non-contacting radar level transmitter built for hygienic tanks. It measures continuous level with 80 GHz FMCW radar from a polished 316L stainless steel housing, and it is aimed at food, beverage and similar sanitary processes where a tank is cleaned with CIP and SIP cycles and washed down on the outside. Seven Star LLC supplies the 1408H in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.
The data sheet describes the signal output as IO-Link, and the device provides two configurable outputs: output 1 works as a digital output or IO-Link line, and output 2 works as a digital output or an active 4-20 mA analog output. The process connection is an ISO 228/1-G1 thread, and a range of hygienic adapters screws onto it.
Reading the 1408H model code
The data sheet shows a typical model string of 1408H I CA C10 Q4 Q8. Taken part by part:
- 1408H: the transmitter itself, with a G1 thread.
- I: the signal output code, IO-Link.
- CA: the hygienic process connection adapter, here a 1½-in. Tri Clamp.
- C10: a cable option, here a hygienic M12 patch cable of 32.8 ft (10 m).
- Q4 and Q8: a calibration data certificate and EN 10204 3.1 material traceability.
Options such as the cable and the certificates are not printed in the model string on the nameplate, so state them again when you reorder.

How the 1408H measures level
The transmitter sends a frequency-swept microwave signal toward the product and compares the returning echo with the signal being sent. The frequency difference gives the distance to the surface, and the level follows from the tank height. Because nothing touches the product, density, viscosity, temperature, pressure and pH do not change the reading, and there are no wetted moving parts to clean or wear.
The 80 GHz frequency gives a narrow 10° beam. At 6.6 ft (2 m) the beam is about 1.2 ft (0.4 m) wide and at 32.8 ft (10 m) about 5.7 ft (1.7 m), which is why the unit copes with small tanks and nearby internals better than lower-frequency radar. Level can also be reported as distance, electronics temperature and signal strength over IO-Link.
Where the 1408H fits in the system
IO-Link works through a master that collects process data, events and parameters from each device and passes them to the PLC over fieldbus or industrial Ethernet. The 1408H uses IO-Link revision 1.1 at 38.4 kBaud (COM2) with SIO mode, and it expects a Class A master port. Configuration can be done with an IODD-compliant tool or a DTM system with an IODD interpreter. For analog loops, output 2 gives the active 4-20 mA signal.
Other Rosemount radar devices from the same supplier family, such as the 1208 and 3408, address different duties: the 1208 is a compact PVDF unit for water and open channels, and the 3408 is a wireless radar unit. The 1408H is the stainless hygienic version in that group.
Selection checklist for the 1408H
- Confirm that the tank is in the 33 ft (10 m) range, or 49 ft (15 m) for water-based media with a clean surface echo.
- Pick the hygienic adapter: 1½-in. or 2-in. Tri Clamp, DN32, DN40 or DN50 dairy coupling (DIN 11851), VARIVENT type F or N, or the D50 weld-in adapter.
- Check that the adapter approvals you need are present; 3-A, EHEDG, FDA and CRN are listed per adapter in the data sheet.
- Decide on 4-20 mA, digital switching or pure IO-Link, and confirm the PLC side has an IO-Link master.
- Choose cable or connector accessories, and keep the IO-Link run to a maximum of 65.6 ft (20 m) between device and master.
- Check nozzle height against the table: for example 3.9 in. (100 mm) at a 1-in. nozzle, and shorter limits apply for 3-A and EHEDG installations.
Installing and maintaining the 1408H
Mount the 1408H with a clear view of the product surface, away from the inlet stream, not on a manway cover and not above a side manway. Keep it within a 3° tilt of vertical, at least 8 in. (200 mm) from the tank wall and ideally half a tank radius away. The nozzle inside should be smooth with no weld spatter or deposits.
The 24 V supply goes to brown (L+) and blue (L-) wires of the M12 connector, with white as output 2 and black as output 1 / IO-Link. The ingress rating applies only when a suitably rated M12 connector is plugged in. Beyond that, there is little to service on a non-contacting unit; check the adapter O-ring (EPDM or FKM options exist) at each hygiene audit and keep a spare cable and O-ring set.
Typical uses of the 1408H in Oman and the GCC
Dairies, juice and beverage plants, bottling lines, bakeries and pharmaceutical or cosmetic batch rooms in the region run with hot washdowns and high ambient temperatures. A sealed stainless radar unit with a drip-off housing suits those conditions better than a mechanical float. Typical points are storage tanks, mixing tanks with agitators, batch fill vessels and CIP cleaning-agent tanks, where the transmitter can watch levels through and after the cleaning cycle.
Water-treatment skids and chemical dosing tanks in utilities and industry can also use a stainless radar, provided the process wetted materials and temperature suit the data sheet limits.

Many Rosemount transmitters share one platform, so the model code tells you what you have. On a 3051, the letter after the number sets the type: C for coplanar (differential or gauge), T for in-line, L for liquid level and CF for a complete flowmeter. The next characters set the measurement type, the range code, the output (4-20 mA HART, FOUNDATION Fieldbus or WirelessHART) and the wetted materials. A transmitter with the wrong range code may work, but with poor accuracy at the point that matters.
Where Rosemount instruments are used
In Oman and the GCC, Rosemount instruments are used across upstream oil and gas, gas plants and LNG, refineries, tank farms and terminals, power and desalination stations, and water networks. Ultrasonic gas meters and tank gauges are used for fiscal and custody transfer measurement.

FAQ
Questions about the Rosemount 1408H Hygienic Radar Level Transmitter
Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.
01What measuring range does the Rosemount 1408H have?
The data sheet gives a maximum range of 33 ft (10 m). Up to 49 ft (15 m) is possible when the product surface reflects well, for example water-based media with a dielectric constant above 10.
02Which outputs does the 1408H provide?
It has two configurable outputs. Output 1 is a digital output or the IO-Link line, and output 2 is a digital output or an active 4-20 mA analog output. The unit runs on 18 to 30 Vdc.
03How is the 1408H connected to the process?
It has an ISO 228/1-G1 thread that takes hygienic adapters: Tri Clamp, DIN 11851 dairy coupling, VARIVENT or a D50 weld-in adapter. A mounting bracket is also listed.
04What process temperature and pressure can it take?
With an adapter the process temperature is -4 to 302 °F (-20 to 150 °C), and pressure is -15 to 116 psig (-1 to 8 bar). Flanges are for non-pressurized applications only.
05What is the beam angle and why does it matter?
The beam angle is 10°. A narrow beam reduces echoes from tank walls and internals, which helps in small vessels, but the unit still needs a clear view of the surface and a smooth nozzle.
