Overview

Measurement and Operating Principle

The Rosemount 396PVP measures pH, or ORP depending on configuration, using a glass measuring electrode paired with a reference electrode, generating a millivolt signal proportional to hydrogen ion activity in the process liquid. What sets the 396PVP apart is its reference junction geometry: the TUpH junction presents a large, flat reference surface area to the process fluid, which dramatically slows the rate at which suspended solids can bridge or coat the junction and cause reference drift. A titanium solution ground is built into the sensor body, giving stable readings even in process streams carrying stray electrical currents that would otherwise induce noisy or erratic pH readings on a standard sensor.

Signal transmission from the Rosemount 396PVP uses the Variopol VP8 connector system, a rugged quick-disconnect interface that lets technicians swap a fouled or aged sensor for a spare in seconds, without rewiring terminals in the field. The VP8 cable carries the high-impedance glass and reference signals to a Rosemount analyzer or transmitter with minimal signal loss, preserving measurement accuracy even when cable runs pass through electrically noisy plant areas.

Engineering Design
