Rosemount 3051SMV MultiVariable Transmitter
Overview
The Rosemount 3051SMV is the MultiVariable member of the Rosemount 3051S scalable platform. Instead of reporting differential pressure alone, one transmitter measures differential pressure, static pressure and process temperature, and with the MultiVariable type M option it calculates fully compensated mass flow, volumetric flow, energy flow and totalized flow inside the device. The manufacturer data sheet positions it for gas, natural gas, steam and liquid flow measurement, where a conventional DP loop would need a separate pressure transmitter, a temperature transmitter and a flow computer.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Rosemount 3051SMV MultiVariable Transmitter on request with engineering support in Muscat. Buyers across Oman and the GCC send the measurement type, DP range, static pressure range, output and process connection, and receive a valid model code with the matching manufacturer data sheet and lead time. This page covers the Rosemount 3051SMV specifically; for the wider platform of Coplanar, in-line and level models see the Rosemount 3051S Series page.
Measurement Principle
The Rosemount 3051SMV uses the same all-welded Coplanar sensor module concept as the other 3051S models for differential pressure, and adds a static pressure sensor, either absolute or gauge, inside the same module. A Pt 100 RTD input covers process temperature from –200 to 850 °C (–328 to 1562 °F). The data sheet lists a differential pressure update rate of 22 times per second, 11 updates per second for static pressure and one per second for temperature, while calculated mass, volumetric and energy flow are refreshed 22 times per second and totalized flow once per second. Dead time is 100 ms for differential pressure.
Because gas density, steam density and liquid density all change with pressure and temperature, an uncompensated DP flow signal drifts away from true mass flow whenever the process moves. The Rosemount 3051SMV corrects for static pressure, temperature, density, viscosity, gas expansion, discharge coefficient and thermal effects in the transmitter itself. For DP ranges 2 and 3 with full compensation, the data sheet quotes 0.65 percent of flow rate over a 14:1 flow range for the Ultra for Flow class and 0.70 percent over 8:1 for Classic MV, assuming an uncalibrated orifice installed per ASME MFC-3M or ISO 5167-1.
Engineering Design of the Rosemount 3051SMV
Two performance classes are offered. Ultra for Flow gives 0.04 percent of reading DP accuracy, 200:1 rangedown, 15-year stability and a 15-year limited warranty, and is available on DP ranges 2 to 4 with 316L stainless steel or alloy C-276 diaphragms and silicone fill. Classic MV gives 0.04 percent of span DP accuracy with 100:1 rangedown. DP range codes run from 1, at ±25 inH2O (±62.16 mbar), up to 5, at ±2000 psi (±137.89 bar), and static pressure ranges reach 800 psi, 3,626 psi (250 bar) or 6,092 psi (420 bar) on the sealed gauge range 5. Isolating diaphragms are 316L stainless steel, alloy C-276, tantalum or gold-plated 316L.
The Rosemount 3051SMV can be assembled to a Rosemount 305 or 306 integral manifold, a 304 manifold, 1199 remote seals, a 405C or 405P primary element, an 1195 integral orifice or an Annubar primary element, which allows the complete flow assembly to be ordered as one configured unit. Outputs are 4–20 mA with HART, FOUNDATION Fieldbus or WirelessHART, and Plantweb housings come in aluminum or stainless steel with ½-14 NPT, M20 or G½ conduit entries. External power is 12 to 42.4 Vdc for wired versions.
Key Features
The Rosemount 3051SMV combines three measurements and the flow calculation in one housing. The features below come from the Emerson data sheet.
- Measures differential pressure, static pressure and process temperature simultaneously, with measurement types 1 to 4 selecting which variables are active.
- Calculates fully compensated mass flow, volumetric flow, energy flow and totalized flow in the transmitter when MultiVariable type M is specified.
- Gives the Rosemount 3051SMV an Ultra for Flow class with 0.04 percent of reading DP accuracy and up to 200:1 DP rangedown for wide flow turndown.
- Provides 15-year stability, with a 15-year limited warranty on the Ultra for Flow class.
- Accepts any Pt 100 RTD, such as the Rosemount 214C, with armored and flameproof cable options up to 75 ft.
- Reduces pipe penetrations and impulse piping compared with separate DP, pressure and temperature points.
- Supports HART, FOUNDATION Fieldbus and WirelessHART, the latter with the process variables only configuration.
- Can be certified to IEC 61508 for use in safety instrumented systems, with FMEDA documentation available under option QT.
Industrial Applications
The Rosemount 3051SMV is used where mass or energy flow must be reported without extra instruments: fuel gas and flare gas headers, natural gas feeds to turbines and boilers, steam networks for process heating and desalination, and liquid hydrocarbon lines where temperature moves the density. In Oman these duties appear at gas processing plants, power and water complexes and refineries, including facilities near Sohar and Salalah, where fewer process penetrations also reduce leak points and maintenance exposure.

These are standard instruments in oil and gas production, refining, petrochemical, power and water plants. Typical duties are line and vessel pressure, differential pressure flow across orifice plates, tank and separator level and interface, and temperature measurement on pipes, reactors and rotating equipment.Ordering Rosemount transmitters: what we need
Send the complete model string and the serial number from the nameplate; a photo is ideal. Every character of the string selects something: range, output, materials of the isolating diaphragm and flange, process connection, housing, approval and options. If you are specifying a new point, give the measured variable and span, process fluid, pressure and temperature, connection, output (4-20 mA HART, FOUNDATION Fieldbus or wireless), display and hazardous area approval. For remote seals add flange size, rating and capillary length.Browse Rosemount products by category: Pressure Instrumentation, Temperature Instrumentation, Level Transmitter, Liquid Analysis Sensors, Flowmeters.
