Rosemount 3051L Liquid Level Transmitter
Overview
The Rosemount 3051L is Emerson’s flanged differential pressure level transmitter. The official data sheet explains that it combines the performance and capabilities of Rosemount 3051 transmitters with the reliability and quality of a direct mount seal in one model number, and that it offers a variety of process connections, configurations and fill fluid types to meet a breadth of level applications. The all-welded seal system removes the capillary joints, thread leaks and field assembly of a conventional wet-leg installation, making the 3051L a preferred option for tanks, vessels and columns with demanding fluids.

Level Measurement Principle
The Rosemount 3051L measures hydrostatic head. A flanged seal mounted on the vessel nozzle transmits the pressure of the liquid column through a fill fluid to the 3051 sensor module. On an open tank the low side vents to atmosphere, while on a closed or pressurized vessel the low side connects to the vapor space or to a second seal through capillary. The sensor converts the differential pressure to a digital value, and the transmitter configurator can express it as level or volume. A built-in level configurator method guides the engineer through the setup, and it is available with options M6, BLE, D1, DA1, T9 or RK.
The fill fluid defines the temperature window of the seal. The data sheet lists silicone 200 from –45 to 205 °C, silicone 704 from 0 to 205 °C, SYLTHERM XLT from –75 to 145 °C, inert halocarbon from –45 to 160 °C, glycerin and water from –15 to 95 °C, Neobee M-20 from –15 to 205 °C and propylene glycol and water from –15 to 95 °C. Vacuum-grade silicone fills are also offered. Reference accuracy is 0.075 percent of span on ranges 2 to 4, and the QZ option quantifies total performance under real operating conditions.
Engineering Design of the Rosemount 3051L
The Rosemount 3051L pressure ranges are limited to three codes, range 2 at –250 to 250 inH2O, range 3 at –1000 to 1000 inH2O and range 4 at –300 to 300 psi, because the seal supplies the head rather than the sensor range. The high side flange is 2, 3 or 4 inch ASME B16.5 in Class 150, 300 or 600, or EN 1092-1 DN 50, DN 80 or DN 100, with JIS 10K to 40K options. Materials are carbon steel or 316 stainless steel flanges, with a 316L stainless steel, alloy C-276 or tantalum diaphragm. Extension lengths of 2, 4 and 6 inches (50, 100 and 150 mm) move the diaphragm clear of insulation or into the process.
The Rosemount 3051L low side can be a gauge connection or a differential flange adapter. A 2-inch Class 150 flush transmitter weighs 12.5 lb (5.7 kg) without options. Overpressure is limited to the flange rating or the sensor rating, whichever is lower, and flange ratings follow ASME B16.5 for Class 150, 300 and 600. The device offers 4 to 20 mA HART, low-power 1 to 5 Vdc HART, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, PROFIBUS PA and WirelessHART outputs, a back-lit graphical display, Bluetooth, the Loop Integrity diagnostic and safety certification options.

Industrial Applications
The Rosemount 3051L is used wherever a standard impulse line would plug, freeze, leak or require heat tracing. Typical Rosemount 3051L service includes crude and slop tanks, distillation columns and separators, boiler drums, chemical reactors, viscous or corrosive liquids and high temperature services that need a diaphragm seal. Because the seal is flush or extended at the nozzle, the transmitter can also be applied to slurries and fluids with suspended solids.
