On the portable side, the ALTAIR 4XR is the four-gas detector for combustible gas, oxygen, carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulfide, and the ALTAIR io4 is the connected version that reports readings to a cloud platform. The GALAXY GX2 automated test system handles bump tests and calibration records for ALTAIR instruments.
On the fixed side, the ULTIMA X5000 and General Monitors S5000 are transmitters for combustible, toxic and oxygen sensors. Many installed units still carry the General Monitors name on the nameplate. The Chillgard 5000 is a refrigerant leak monitor for machinery rooms. Small consumables are listed too, such as window cleaning solution 10272-1.
Where MSA gas monitors are used
Fixed MSA gas monitors are found on wellheads, gas plants, refineries, tank farms, LNG and petrochemical units, wherever hydrocarbon or H2S leaks must be alarmed early. Chillgard monitors serve chiller plant rooms in district cooling and large buildings, a common application in the GCC.

Send the full part number or the configuration code from the nameplate, the target gas and range, the sensor technology (catalytic, infrared, electrochemical), the housing material, the output (4-20 mA with HART, optional relays) and the hazardous area approval required. For portables, state the sensor combination, charger type and regional version. For replacement sensors, a nameplate photo of the transmitter avoids mistakes. How do I identify the exact version of an ULTIMA X5000 or S5000 gas monitor?
Read the nameplate on the transmitter housing. It shows the model, the part or configuration number, the serial number and the approval markings, and the sensor body carries its own label with gas type and range. Send photos of both. The configuration number decodes the housing material, outputs, relays and sensor selection, so a replacement can be matched to the installed unit.
What is the difference between the MSA ULTIMA X5000 and the General Monitors S5000?
Both are current MSA fixed gas transmitters that take combustible, toxic and oxygen sensors and give 4-20 mA output with HART. The S5000 carries the General Monitors name, which many plants have in their standards and spares lists. Choose according to what your plant has standardized on and which sensors are already installed, then confirm the details in the MSA manual for that model.
Which hazardous area approvals do MSA fixed gas detectors carry?
MSA issues its fixed gas monitors with regional approvals such as ATEX, IECEx and CSA for hazardous areas, and it publishes a SIL safety manual for the ULTIMA X5000, which is listed as suitable for SIL 2. The approval set depends on the configuration ordered. State the certificate scheme your project needs and we will match the version and provide the manufacturer's certificates on request.
Does the GALAXY GX2 test system work with every ALTAIR detector?
No. A GALAXY GX2 test stand is specific to the detector family it docks: MSA supplies separate versions for the ALTAIR 4 and 4X family, including the 4XR, and for the ALTAIR 5 and 5X. Connected io detectors use their own dock. Tell us which ALTAIR models you run and how many gas cylinders you need on the stand, and we will check the correct version in MSA's documentation.
