AUMA SAREx 14.2 Explosion-Proof Modulating Actuator
Description
Overview
AUMA SAREx 14.2 is the fourth SAREx frame and the first on F14: 120 to 250 Nm tripping torque (S4-25 %) with up to 120 / 60 Nm of modulating torque (S4-25 % / S4-50 %).
Seven Star LLC is a trusted supplier of AUMA products for the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC and quotes the SAREx 14.2 as genuine factory product. Gas-processing and utility projects around Sohar and Salalah are served from Muscat. Alternatives and related pages: SAREx range, Ex multi-turn range (SAEx) and AUMA TIGRON TR-M explosion-proof multi-turn actuator.
Operating Principle of the AUMA SAREx 14.2
The SAREx 14.2 is built for intermittent duty, S4-25 % and S4-50 % to class C, so it can follow a controller within the starts limit of 900 per hour at 4 to 11 rpm and 200 per hour at 63 to 90 rpm. The pulse must be at least 70 ms. AMExC or ACExC controls are required to drive the actuator.
Engineering Design of the SAREx 14.2
The SAREx 14.2 allows 900 starts per hour at 4 to 11 rpm but only 200 at 63 to 90 rpm, so a fast control loop should use a slower speed or accept a lower correction rate. The minimum pulse is 70 ms and the weight is 48 to 52 kg, which requires lifting equipment when fitted to elevated control valves.
Cabling uses the Ex plug/socket connector (KT) with spring-clamp control terminals, within an IP68 housing; a 12.5 W motor heater can be added.
Key Features of the AUMA SAREx 14.2
Headline data of the AUMA SAREx 14.2, as documented by AUMA:
- Trip torque from 120 to 250 Nm for S4-25 % duty, up to 180 Nm for S4-50 %.
- Modulating torque up to 120 / 60 Nm (S4-25 % / S4-50 %).
- Output speeds of 4–90 rpm at 50 Hz, with starts graded by speed band.
- Handwheel diameter 315 mm, approximate weight 48 kg (4–11 rpm), 52 kg (16–90 rpm).
- 0.12–1.40 kW motors at 400 V; pulse timing 70 ms (same direction); on reversal 280 ms at 4 rpm down to 80 ms at 90 rpm.
Selecting the AUMA SAREx 14.2 for Your Valve
The SAREx 14.2 moves the modulating family to the F14 flange and a 58 mm stem capacity, with 120 to 250 Nm tripping torque. The number of permitted starts depends strongly on speed: 900 per hour from 4 to 11 rpm, 600 from 16 to 22 rpm, 300 from 32 to 45 rpm and 200 from 63 to 90 rpm. Slower speeds therefore allow more frequent positioning, and the speed ratio should be chosen with the control loop in mind.
The SAREx 14.2 doubles the SAREx 10.2 trip ceiling from 120 to 250 Nm, moves to the F14 flange with a 58 mm stem and a 315 mm handwheel and weighs 48 to 52 kg. The SAREx 14.6 doubles it again to 500 Nm on the same flange.
AUMA SAREx 14.2 Modulating Torque and Starts by Speed
AUMA publishes these limits for the AUMA SAREx 14.2 at nominal voltage and +40 °C ambient temperature. Tripping torque is adjustable up to 250 Nm (S4-25 %) or 180 Nm (S4-50 %). Illustrative calculation, not AUMA data: a control valve with 12 turns per stroke needs 180 s at 4 rpm, 33 s at 22 rpm and 8 s at 90 rpm for a full stroke.
| rpm (50 Hz) | Modulating torque S4-25 / S4-50 %, Nm | Max. starts per hour |
|---|---|---|
| 4–11 | 120 / 60 | 900 |
| 16–22 | 120 / 60 | 600 |
| 32–45 | 120 / 60 | 300 |
| 63–90 | 100 / 50 | 200 |
Loop-tuning note: the SAREx 14.2 has a 70 ms minimum pulse and a reversal pulse from 280 ms (4 rpm) down to 80 ms (90 rpm). The permitted starts fall from 900 to 200 per hour as speed rises, so a loop that needs frequent corrections should use the lower speed bands and accept longer stroke times. A speed of 11 rpm (150 ms on reversal, 900 starts per hour) is a practical upper limit for frequent corrections.
Worked Sizing Example for the SAREx 14.2 (Illustrative Calculation)
A throttling valve on a gas-compression station needs 105 Nm modulating torque. The SAREx 14.2 provides 120 Nm up to 45 rpm and 100 Nm at 63 to 90 rpm, so only speeds up to 45 rpm are acceptable. Among them, 32 to 45 rpm permit 300 starts per hour, while 16 to 22 rpm permit 600, so the control-loop correction rate should be checked before the speed is fixed. This is an illustrative calculation, not AUMA data.

Industrial Applications
The AUMA SAREx 14.2 is used on larger control valves in classified areas, for example inlet and outlet control valves on separators, throttling valves in compressor stations and large level-control valves in storage systems. The stepped starts-per-hour limits help engineers match the actuator to control-loop update rates.
In the Gulf, gas-processing plants and refineries rely on this frame size for continuous modulating duty. Seven Star LLC provides quotations, delivery and technical support for the SAREx 14.2 as a trusted supplier of AUMA products for Oman and the GCC.

About brand
Electric actuators for industrial valves are the core of AUMA's business. Founded in 1964 and based in Müllheim, Germany, the company builds multi-turn, part-turn and linear actuators with matching gearboxes and actuator controls, in modular combinations that are fixed at the time of order.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing AUMA actuators, gearboxes, fail-safe units and the SIMA2 master station for valve automation projects and replacements in Oman and the GCC.
AUMA actuator and gearbox types
SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line. Special items include the seawater-resistant SGM and SGMR part-turn actuators with bronze housings, the SVC and SVCR globe valve actuators and the FQM fail-safe unit. Integral controls come as AM or AC versions.Where AUMA electric actuators are used
AUMA actuators are found in water, power, oil and gas, marine and general industry. In practice that means isolation and control valves in water treatment and pumping stations, power plant steam and cooling systems, tank farms and pipelines, and sluice gates and dampers.Ordering AUMA actuators and parts: what we need
For a replacement send photos of the actuator, motor and controls nameplates: type, order number, serial number and wiring diagram number. For a new actuator we need:- valve type, required torque or thrust, and turns or stroke
- valve mounting flange and stem or shaft details
- output speed, duty (open-close or modulating)
