Operating Principle of the AUMA SAEx 14.6

At the heart of the SAEx 14.6 sits a 3-phase AC motor with a reduction gear; counter gears fix the end positions and the torque switches trip at the set value, which can be up to 500 Nm. Output speeds up to 90 rpm are self-locking, those from 125 rpm are not, and AMExC or ACExC controls are mandatory.

The SAEx 14.6 weighs 50 to 56 kg and carries a 400 mm handwheel, so allow space around the valve for the wheel and for lifting. Because run torque depends on speed (175 Nm at 4 to 11 rpm, 100 Nm at 180 rpm), commissioning engineers should confirm that the chosen speed leaves enough run torque for the longest expected stroke, not just for the seating torque at the end of travel.

The unit uses the Ex plug/socket connector (KT), spring-clamp control terminals and screw-type motor terminals. IP68 is the standard enclosure rating; the heater option is 12.5 W.

Selecting the AUMA SAEx 14.6 for Your Valve

The SAEx 14.6 shares its F14 flange and 58 mm stem capacity with the 14.2 but doubles the torque to 500 Nm, which makes it the usual upgrade when a valve moves from medium to heavy duty without changing the flange. The handwheel grows to 400 mm and run torque is graded by speed, from 175 Nm at 4 to 11 rpm down to 100 Nm at 180 rpm. That staged run-torque curve means the speed ratio, not just the tripping torque, should be matched to the valve.

Both SAEx 14.2 and SAEx 14.6 sit on the F14 flange with a 58 mm stem, yet the 14.6 doubles the ceiling to 500 Nm and moves to a 400 mm handwheel and 50 to 56 kg. Beyond 500 Nm the SAEx 16.2 takes over with F16, 77 mm and a 500 mm handwheel.

A large tank-outlet gate valve is quoted at 380 Nm seating torque. The SAEx 14.6 provides 500 Nm at speeds up to 125 rpm and 400 Nm at 180 rpm, so even the fastest version retains a margin of 20 Nm. The run-torque ladder (175, 150, 125, 120, 110 and 100 Nm) means that the slowest speed offers the greatest reserve for a stiff mid-stroke. Cold-start conditions after a long idle period are the main reason for choosing this reserve. This is an illustrative calculation, not AUMA data.

The AUMA SAEx 14.6 is aimed at heavy valve duties on the same F14 flange: large gate valves on crude-oil and gas pipelines, tank outlet valves and compressor suction and discharge valves where the 14.2’s 250 Nm is not enough. The 500 Nm range allows engineers to keep the valve flange pattern unchanged while securing a generous torque margin for cold-start and high-differential-pressure conditions.
