The JUMO tecLine CR-4P (type 202930) is a conductive four-electrode conductivity sensor that fills the gap between two-electrode cells and inductive measurement. Because excitation and voltage measurement are separated across two pairs of electrodes, polarisation effects recede and the influence of contamination or deposits is reduced. The datasheet gives a typical range of about 1 uS/cm to 600 mS/cm from a single sensor, so the same cell can follow rinse water, product and cleaning solution in food, beverage, pharmaceutical and biotechnology plants. It mounts through the hygienic JUMO PEKA adapter system and is designed to EHEDG and FDA standards.

Adapters, cables and transmitters

Installation is only possible with JUMO PEKA process connection adapters, which are ordered separately and are made of 1.4435 (316L) with an EN 10204-3.1 certificate: Varivent DN 40 to 125 (00577961), clamp DN 25/32/40 (00577998), clamp DN 50 (00577997), aseptic DN 40 (00577995), aseptic DN 50 (00577979) and aseptic NKS DN 40 (00577999). A spare EPDM O-ring is 00446162. The customer supplies the T-pieces. The datasheet tabulates which fitting length suits which pipe: the short 18 mm design for Varivent and the smaller clamp sizes, the medium and long designs for larger pipes and aseptic fittings, and it recommends checking the cell constant with the transmitter calibration procedure for some clamp combinations.

The cell needs a dedicated 8-pin cable. For the AQUIS 500 CR and dTRANS CR 02 the cable is 00528699 (5 m) or 00528700 (10 m); for the AQUIS touch S/P the versions with extended Pt1000 leads are 00502027 and 00502029; for the digiLine CR ST10 plastic-connector cables of 1.5, 5 and 10 m are 00759427, 00759428 and 00759431. Cable shielding must be connected at the transmitter only, never at the sensor.

Application notes

In operation the transmitter drives an alternating control current through the outer electrode pair and reads the voltage that appears across the inner pair, then calculates conductivity from both. The datasheet notes that supply-line resistances are largely compensated automatically and that measurement errors from contamination or deposits are reduced compared with two-electrode sensors. The standard seal is EPDM, with other materials on request, and every sensor ships with a certificate of quality that states the exact cell constant, FDA compliance of the material and typical surface roughness. Any cell constant deviation from the nameplate value can be adjusted at the transmitter.

The sensor needs no incident flow, but flow is recommended for fast, stable values and to prevent deposits, and it can also be fitted in container walls with at least 18 mm distance to the wall. CIP and SIP capability, reverse-osmosis and ion-exchanger monitoring, phase separation, bottle cleaning and process water are the uses named. A good enquiry gives the conductivity span, cleaning chemicals and temperatures, pipe size, hygienic connection standard and the transmitter to be used.

Choosing a temperature sensor starts with the range and accuracy. A Pt100 RTD is accurate and stable from about -200 to 600 °C and is the usual choice in process plants. A thermocouple (type K or J, for example) covers much higher temperatures and responds faster but is less accurate. The wiring also matters: a 3-wire or 4-wire Pt100 connection cancels the resistance of the cable, while a 2-wire connection adds an error that grows with cable length. That is why a head-mounted transmitter is often fitted close to the sensor.
