ABB TB47 High-Pressure Hot-Tap Type Stainless Steel Electrodes

Description

Overview

The ABB TB47 is a high-pressure, retractable hot-tap four-electrode contacting conductivity sensor built with 316 stainless steel electrodes, designed for insertion into pressurized process lines through a 1½-inch ball valve without a process shutdown. Its extraction housing with integral purge ports allows the electrode assembly to be safely withdrawn under line pressure for inspection or replacement.

As a member of ABB’s TB4 four-electrode conductivity family, the TB47 uses a four-electrode measurement cell — rather than the two-electrode design of the TB2 series — which extends accurate measurement to very high conductivity levels while remaining largely self-compensating for electrode fouling. Seven Star LLC supplies the TB47 to refineries and process plants across Oman and the GCC.

Operating Principle

The TB47 drives an AC current through an outer pair of electrodes and measures the resulting voltage drop across an inner pair, a four-electrode arrangement that largely cancels out electrode polarization and fouling errors that affect simpler two-electrode designs, especially at high conductivity. An integral 3 kΩ temperature element provides automatic temperature compensation, and the sensor’s retractable hot-tap housing lets it be extracted under full line pressure through its ball-valve assembly for cleaning or replacement.

Engineering Design of the ABB TB47

The TB47 connects via a ¾-inch NPT by ½-inch compression fitting through a 1½-inch ball valve, allowing retraction under pressure. It is rated for process temperatures up to 200°C and pressures up to 2068 kPa (300 psig) at that temperature, with 316 stainless steel wetted electrodes and a PEEK insulator. The sensor covers a wide measurement range — up to 0–2,000,000 µS/cm on the high-range group or 0–2,000 µS/cm on the lower-range group — and is available with cable lengths from a local junction box up to 30.5m (100ft) for remote transmitter mounting.

Industrial Applications

The TB47 is specified for high-pressure, high-conductivity process streams in refineries and petrochemical plants across Muscat, Sohar, and Salalah, where the four-electrode design’s resistance to fouling and polarization error is essential — caustic scrubber liquor, concentrated brine, and high-strength wastewater are typical duties. Its retractable hot-tap housing lets these demanding measurement points remain serviceable without a process shutdown.

Across the GCC’s oil, gas, and chemical processing sectors, the TB47 is also used for desalination brine concentration monitoring and high-conductivity effluent streams, where a two-electrode sensor’s accuracy would degrade at the upper end of the conductivity range.

Selecting the Correct TB4-Family Sensor

Before ordering, confirm the conductivity range the process will actually see, including upsets, as this decides which range group is required. Also check the maximum process pressure and temperature against the sensor rating, the size and type of ball valve available on the line, the insertion depth needed to place the electrodes in the flowing stream, and the cable length to the transmitter. When replacing an existing sensor, the full model code on the sensor label or in the original purchase documents is the most reliable way to match the new unit to the installed transmitter and mounting hardware.

Installation and Commissioning

  • Install the ball valve on a section of line that stays full of liquid, away from air pockets and dead legs
  • Orient the sensor so that the electrodes sit in the flowing stream and gas bubbles cannot collect around them
  • Follow the retraction procedure and use the purge ports when inserting or withdrawing the sensor under pressure, with the correct personal protection
  • Enter the sensor constants and temperature compensation settings in the transmitter to match the sensor
  • Verify the reading against a grab sample measured with a calibrated laboratory or portable meter

Maintenance and Troubleshooting

The four-electrode design of the ABB TB47 tolerates a degree of fouling, but heavy scale, oil films or solids build-up will still affect the reading over time. A cleaning interval based on site experience, with a comparison against a reference measurement each time, keeps the loop reliable. Erratic readings usually come from air bubbles, a partly filled line, damaged cable or moisture in the junction box, while a slow drift in one direction points more often to coating on the electrodes. Temperature readings that look wrong should be checked at the temperature element before the conductivity calibration is adjusted.

Applications in Oman and the GCC

In the region, high-conductivity measurement points are common in desalination plants, refinery caustic and wash-water systems, and produced-water treatment. Being able to service the sensor without depressurising the line is valuable where shutdown windows are limited.

TB47 Model Code Breakdown

The TB47 model code is built from five characters after the base number. The first selects the measurement range: A for 0 to 2,000,000 µS/cm or B for 0 to 2,000 µS/cm. The second, 6, identifies the 316 stainless steel (AISI 1.4401) assembly with PEEK insulator rated 300 psi at 200 °C, and the third, E, the integral 3 kΩ temperature compensator. ABB shows the A-range sensor as TB471 and the B-range sensor as TB475; the two have different electrode tips.

The fourth character sets the mounting hardware: 0 for the complete assembly with 1.5 inch ball valve and flush and drain extraction housing, 6 for the sensor and extraction housing without ball valve, and 7 for the basic sensor alone. The last character is the integral cable length, from 5 ft (1.5 m) to 50 ft (15.2 m) in 5 ft steps, or 0 for no cable with a junction box included. The 75 ft (22.9 m) and 100 ft (30.5 m) lengths are offered only on the A-range sensor.

Accessories and Compatible Instruments

ABB lists the following accessories for the TB47: interconnecting cable sold per foot (4TB3004-0008), junction box (4TB5023-0088), 316 stainless steel 1.5 inch ball valve assembly with wrench-tight fittings (4TB5205-0255), flush and drain extraction housing (4TB5101-0504), and cable grips with reducer for the junction box (4TB9515-0244). The integral 3 kΩ temperature compensator must be supported by the instrument; ABB states that its AX4 series, TB82EC and TB84EC instruments accept this type. The extraction housing has 1/4 NPT purge connections for flush and drain lines.
