Endress+Hauser FMR60B Micropilot 80 GHz Radar Level Sensor

Description

Endress+Hauser FMR60B 80 GHz radar for liquids, pastes and sludges

The Endress+Hauser FMR60B is a Micropilot free-space radar transmitter for continuous, non-contact level measurement of liquids, pastes and sludges. It works at about 80 GHz, is powered from a 4-20 mA HART loop, and carries one of four antenna styles: a PEEK integrated antenna (20 or 40 mm), an encapsulated PVDF antenna (40 mm) or a PTFE drip-off antenna (50 mm). The FMR60B is the simple, general-purpose liquid sensor of the Micropilot B-series, aimed at tanks where the process is not extreme and the connection is a thread or a mounting bracket.

Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, supplies the FMR60B in Oman and the GCC for water, wastewater, chemical and fuel tanks. This page explains the antenna choices of the FMR60B, how to read its range tables, and what we need to quote the correct version.

How the FMR60B antenna choice changes performance

The FMR60B transmits a narrow radar beam and evaluates the echo from the liquid surface. The antenna decides the range and the process limits. The small PEEK antenna fits a ¾ in thread and suits tanks up to about 10 m. The 40 mm PEEK antenna reaches 22 m. The encapsulated PVDF antenna is the choice for aggressive liquids since only PVDF is wetted, and it reaches 40 m, but its pressure and temperature limits are lower. The PTFE drip-off antenna reaches 50 m; its shape lets condensate run off, which helps in vessels where vapour forms droplets on the antenna. Beam angle is 8 degrees for the PVDF antenna and 6 degrees for the drip-off type, so a 20 m distance lights a circle roughly 2.8 m or 2.1 m wide.

FMR60B range by media group

Media group (εr) PEEK 40 mm, calm tank PVDF 40 mm, calm tank Drip-off 50 mm, calm tank
A0 (1.2 to 1.4), e.g. liquid nitrogen 3 m 7 m 7 m
A (1.4 to 1.9), e.g. liquefied gas 6 m 12 m 12 m
B (1.9 to 4), e.g. oil, gasoline 11 m 23 m 23 m
C (4 to 10), e.g. solvents 15 m 40 m 40 m
D (above 10), e.g. water 22 m 40 m 50 m

These values apply to calm surfaces. In buffer vessels with moving surface or an agitator the ranges are shorter and the datasheet lists them separately; for example the PVDF antenna drops from 23 m to 15 m on group B in a buffer vessel. If the dielectric constant is unknown, assume group B. Ammonia, acetone, methylene chloride, MEK, propylene oxide and VCM have an absorbing gas phase, and the maker recommends guided radar or another frequency there.

Where the FMR60B fits and related Micropilot models

The FMR60B is the entry radar for liquids in the B-series. Step up to the FMR62B when you need flanged connections, up to 160 bar, up to +450 °C, or SIL 3 type approval and a longer 80 m range. The FMR63B is the hygienic version, the FMR43 is the compact hygienic sensor for small tanks, and the FMR66B serves solids. Contact-type guided radar such as the Levelflex family is the alternative when the vapour absorbs microwaves.

FMR60B selection and ordering checklist

  • Medium, dielectric constant or media group, and any foam, vapour or condensation.
  • Tank height, calm or agitated surface, and internals in the beam.
  • Antenna: PEEK 20 or 40 mm, PVDF encapsulated, or PTFE drip-off.
  • Connection: thread ¾ in or 1½ in, UNI flange (PP or 316L), or mounting bracket.
  • Temperature and pressure window and the matching seal: FKM, EPDM, HNBR or FFKM.
  • Housing material, cable entry and display; Bluetooth.
  • Hazardous-area approvals, SIL requirement and CRN if needed.

FMR60B installation, commissioning and maintenance

Mount the FMR60B on a nozzle that matches the antenna, with the beam clear of the tank wall, ladders and the filling stream. A nozzle that is too long or too narrow lowers signal quality, so follow the nozzle table in the datasheet for each antenna. Up to 8 devices can work in the same tank without disturbing each other. Commissioning is menu guided through the local display, HART or the SmartBlue app, and an interference echo map is stored after the tank is partly filled. For SIL or WHG duties, use the guided proof test in the device.

In service, keep the antenna free of heavy buildup, check seals at planned shutdowns, and use Heartbeat Technology diagnostics instead of removing the sensor when you need to prove it still measures correctly.

FMR60B applications in Oman and the GCC

In the Gulf, the FMR60B is used on desalination chemical dosing tanks, potable and process water storage, wastewater lift stations, fuel and lube oil day tanks, and utility tanks at power and petrochemical sites. Hot sun on outdoor tanks, humid air and condensation are normal, and the sealed IP66/68 housing and the drip-off antenna handle them well. The non-contact principle avoids wear in sludge and slurry.

Where Endress+Hauser instruments are used

In Oman and the GCC, Endress+Hauser instruments are common in oil and gas production and processing, refineries and petrochemicals, desalination and water networks, wastewater treatment, power plants and food and beverage plants. Coriolis meters measure hydrocarbon and chemical flows, electromagnetic meters cover water and wastewater, radar transmitters handle tank and silo level, and Liquiline analysers monitor water quality. Proline 300 and 500 flowmeters include Heartbeat Technology for in-situ verification, which reduces the need to remove a meter for checks.

Ordering Endress+Hauser instruments: what we need

The order code on the nameplate (for example PMP71-1QA1S11RDADU) defines every option: measuring range, process connection, materials, output, approvals and display. Send it with the serial number; Endress+Hauser can retrieve the original configuration from the serial number. For a new instrument add the medium, operating and design pressure and temperature, range, line size or tank geometry, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol (4-20 mA HART, PROFIBUS, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, Modbus) and the hazardous-area approval required. Older models such as Promass 80/83 or Micropilot M are replaced by current Proline or 80 GHz Micropilot devices.

FAQ

Questions about the Endress+Hauser FMR60B Micropilot 80 GHz Radar Level

Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.

01What does the Endress+Hauser FMR60B measure?
The FMR60B is a non-contact 80 GHz radar transmitter for continuous level in liquids, pastes and sludges. It is mounted on a thread or bracket and gives 4-20 mA with HART.
02How far can the FMR60B measure?
The maximum range depends on the antenna: 10 m for 20 mm PEEK, 22 m for 40 mm PEEK, 40 m for PVDF encapsulated and 50 m for the PTFE drip-off antenna. Real range also depends on the dielectric constant of the liquid.
03What accuracy does the FMR60B have?
Accuracy is plus or minus 1 mm for measuring distances above 0.8 m, and up to plus or minus 4 mm closer than 0.8 m. Non-repeatability is 1 mm or better.
04What are the FMR60B process limits?
The overall range is -40 to +200 C and -1 to 20 bar, but limits depend on antenna and seal. The PVDF encapsulated antenna is limited to 3 bar and 80 C, with atmospheric pressure to 130 C.
05Is the FMR60B suitable for SIL applications?
The device supports SIL 2 and SIL 3 with homogeneous redundancy, and includes guided proof testing for SIL and WHG, depending on the version ordered.
