ABB ACS-AP-S Standard Assistant Control Panel

Description

A keypad panel for ACS580-class drives

The ACS-AP-S is ABB’s standard Assistant control panel, the plug-in keypad and display used to start up, monitor and set parameters on general purpose and machinery drives. ABB’s user’s manual lists it for ACS380, ACS480, ACS530, ACS560 and ACS580 drives, and the ABB product page presents it as the standard assistant panel of the ACS580 family. It is not a drive: it is an accessory with an LCD, a keypad, an RJ-45 link to the drive and a USB port for a PC, so it is ordered together with, or after, the drive it will serve.

Daily use of the ACS-AP-S

The main Menu holds Parameters, Assistants, Energy efficiency, Event log, History graphs, Backups and System info, and the list adapts to the connected drive. The display is a monochrome FSTN LCD of 240 x 160 pixels with adjustable backlight and contrast. A QR code with drive information can be generated from the Assistants menu or from Menu, System info, QR code, which helps when asking for support. Backups save settings in the panel memory and restore them to the same or another drive, which is the quickest way to clone a configuration across identical machines.

Mounting, cabling and environment

To attach the panel, place its bottom end into the bottom of the slot in the drive and pivot it until you hear a click; it is released again with the clip at the top. The RJ-45 connector joins the panel to the drive, and a cable of up to 100 m (328 ft) may be used. Attached to a drive the panel takes the drive’s protection class, but alone or on an RJ-45 or USB cable it is IP20. For cabinet doors the panel fits the DPMP-01 platform (IP55) or the DPMP-02 and DPMP-03 platforms (IP65). Because the ACS-AP-S has no Bluetooth radio, it suits plants where wireless devices are restricted; the ACS-AP-W is the variant with Bluetooth.

The facts above come from ABB’s assistant control panels user’s manual 3AUA0000085685, linked here, and from ABB’s product page for the ACS-AP-S. Send Seven Star LLC the drive type designation and the quantity, and we will quote the ACS-AP-S with availability. Confirm before ordering that the panel type and firmware version are supported by your drive and whether a DPMP mounting platform or panel cable is also needed. Other accessories are listed in Automation Accessories, and the ABB ACS580 drive is one of the drives that uses this panel. A spare panel is also handy for commissioning engineers who move between machines.

About brand

ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.

Ordering ABB products: what we need

Send the full type code from the nameplate (for example ACS580-01-046A-4 or 266DSH...) and, for spare parts, the ABB ID number (such as 3BSE008508R1 or 1SBL176001R3010). For drives, add the motor power and current and any option codes (+...). For instruments, send the complete order code, which sets range, materials and approvals. Baldor motors are listed on their own brand page.
