The ABB AC500 PLC is the modular controller of the ABB automation family with the CPU, the communication and the I/O modules on the DIN rail. The controller is programmed in the Automation Builder environment with the IEC 61131 languages and the program runs on the CODESYS based runtime. The CPU provides the Ethernet port for the programming and the fieldbus connection to the plant network, and the I/O modules are connected with the expansion bus of the system.

The AC500 CPUs are available with the different performance classes and the memory sizes for the application, and the safety version is used for the functional safety loops. The modular design allows the mixed I/O configuration with the digital, the analog and the special function modules. The spare CPU and the modules are interchangeable with the existing AC500 station.

The AC500 CPU is programmed over the Ethernet port and the runtime is uploaded with the Automation Builder. The I/O modules are mixed on the same backplane and the remote stations are connected with the fieldbus coupler. The CPU provides the SD card slot for the program storage and the backup. The status LEDs on the front indicate the RUN/STOP state and the bus errors of the station.

The AC500 station is expanded with the Ethernet and the fieldbus couplers for the distributed I/O of the machine. The CPU is programmed for the cyclic and the event driven tasks and the diagnostic events are stored in the log. The replacement CPU is loaded with the same project and the station is restarted without the hardware changes.
