ABB Compact orifice flowmeter OriMaster FPD500
Description
Overview
The ABB OriMaster FPD500 is a compact orifice flowmeter that integrates a precision orifice plate, its impulse piping, and an ABB differential-pressure or multivariable transmitter into a single, factory-assembled and pressure-tested wafer-body unit. By eliminating the separate impulse lines that a conventional orifice-plate-plus-remote-transmitter installation requires, the FPD500 removes the most common sources of measurement error and maintenance burden in DP flow metering: leaking impulse-line fittings, condensate or gas pockets trapped in long tubing runs, and freeze risk in cold ambient conditions. The instrument is offered in two configurations – OriMaster V, paired with an ABB 266DSH or 264DS DP transmitter for volumetric flow, and OriMaster M, paired with an ABB 267CS multivariable transmitter that computes mass or temperature/pressure-corrected volumetric flow directly from a single sensing element.
Seven Star LLC supplies this item on request with the manufacturer documentation, and availability and lead time are confirmed at quotation. Every unit shipped is factory-calibrated and pressure-tested to the specific line size, beta ratio, and process conditions ordered, so the flowmeter arrives ready for direct flange installation without field commissioning of impulse tubing.
Operating Principle
The FPD500 measures flow using the differential-pressure principle: fluid accelerating through the fixed-area restriction of a square-edged concentric orifice plate produces a pressure drop across the plate that is proportional to the square of the flow rate. Rather than running that differential pressure through external impulse lines to a remotely mounted transmitter, the FPD500’s wafer body carries corner-tapping points machined directly into the flanges immediately upstream and downstream of the plate, and the DP or multivariable transmitter is bolted straight onto those tapping points via an integral 3-valve or 5-valve manifold. This direct-mount architecture shortens the signal path to a few centimeters instead of several meters of tubing, virtually eliminating the plugging, freezing, and slow-leak failure modes that account for a large share of DP-meter maintenance calls on conventional orifice installations. The manifold’s block-and-bleed valves allow the transmitter to be zeroed, proven, or removed for service without depressurizing the process line.
Engineering Design of the ABB OriMaster FPD500
The FPD500’s wetted primary assembly is manufactured from 316L stainless steel, with process-diaphragm and seal options extending to Hastelloy C276 for NACE-compliant sour-service duty and PTFE or PTFE-graphite combinations for chemical compatibility across a wide range of process media. The wafer body is machined to fit between standard ASME B16.5 and DIN flange drillings, and is available across nine pipe sizes from 25 mm to 300 mm (1 to 12 inches), supporting pressure classes from ASME 150 through 600 and DIN PN10 through PN100, with a maximum rated operating pressure of 100 bar or the applicable flange rating, whichever is lower. Orifice plates are supplied at beta ratios of 0.4 or 0.65 as either fixed or field-replaceable elements, letting Seven Star size each unit to the customer’s actual flow range rather than a generic default. On the OriMaster M variant, the 267CS multivariable transmitter simultaneously senses differential pressure, static line pressure, and process temperature, computing mass flow or corrected volumetric flow without a separate temperature or pressure transmitter – a meaningful reduction in installed instrument count, wiring, and long-term maintenance points compared with a traditional three-instrument DP flow train.
Key Features
The OriMaster FPD500 is built around a small set of design choices that consistently reduce total cost of ownership for Seven Star’s industrial customers in Oman and the GCC:
- Factory-assembled, pressure-tested orifice-plate-and-transmitter package eliminates field impulse-line installation, leak points, and freeze risk entirely.
- System accuracy of ±1% of flowrate at reference conditions, with 0.1% repeatability, suitable for custody-adjacent and process-control duty alike.
- Turndown ratio of up to 8:1 from a single fixed-geometry plate, reducing the need for multiple meter runs across variable-load applications.
- Integral 3-valve or 5-valve manifold enables safe transmitter zeroing, proving, and removal without shutting down or depressurizing the process line.
- “Plugged impulse line detection” continuously monitors the short internal sensing path and raises a visual and output alarm before a blockage can silently corrupt the flow reading.
- Through-the-glass keypad configuration lets technicians range, zero, or diagnose the transmitter without opening the housing cover – a real advantage in hazardous-area installations where cover removal requires a hot-work or gas-free permit.
- HART digital communication is standard, with PROFIBUS PA, Foundation Fieldbus, and Modbus RS485 available on the OriMaster M for direct DCS/SCADA integration, plus an optional WirelessHART variant for retrofit or hard-to-wire locations.
- Wafer-body design fits directly between existing ASME or DIN flange pairs, simplifying retrofit into an existing pipe run without re-engineering the surrounding piping.
Industrial Applications
Seven Star LLC supplies the OriMaster FPD500 into Oman’s upstream and midstream oil & gas facilities, refineries, and gas processing plants in Muscat, Sohar, and Salalah, where compact orifice metering is used for custody-adjacent hydrocarbon flow, produced-water measurement, flare-gas monitoring, and utility steam and compressed-air metering. The elimination of external impulse lines is particularly valuable on offshore platforms and remote wellhead pads across the wider GCC, where every additional field-mounted fitting is a potential leak point exposed to salt air, vibration, and limited maintenance access.
Beyond oil & gas, the FPD500 serves power generation plants for feedwater and steam-cycle flow measurement, desalination and water-treatment facilities for raw and treated water flow, and general process industries – petrochemical, cement, and food & beverage – wherever a robust, low-maintenance DP flowmeter is preferred over a more expensive full-bore technology.
