ABB FIO-01 Digital I/O Extension Module

Description

Where the FIO-01 fits

The FIO-01 is ABB’s Digital I/O Extension, a general purpose option module that adds four bidirectional digital inputs or outputs and two electromechanical relays to a drive. Its manual (3AFE68784921 Rev D, effective 2010-08-10) treats it as a module for the drive’s option slot, programmed through a drive parameter. It is a good fit when the control unit has run out of relay outputs or digital channels for interlocks, status lamps and contactors.

Digital channels and relays

The four digital channels X61 to X64 are inputs by default and can each be programmed as an input, push-pull output or open-collector output. Inputs tolerate up to 30 V with reverse polarity protection and follow the IEC 61131-2 24 V levels. If more than two digital outputs are used the source current is 25 mA, otherwise 50 mA, while the current sink is 500 mA and outputs are short-circuit proof. The two relays offer normally open, common and normally closed contacts on X65 and X66, rated 240 VAC at 2 A or 30 VDC at 5 A resistive, with varistors for inductive loads.

Wiring, settings and LED

Use cable up to 1.5 mm2 for the digital signals and 2.5 mm2 for the relays, tighten the digital plugs to 0.3 Nm and the relay plugs to 0.5 Nm, and do not route signal cables parallel to power cables. New settings only take effect after the module is powered up again. The STATUS LED is green when everything is OK, orange for no initialisation or a communication fault and red for a power fault; if the green LED is unlit, a digital output is short circuited. Typical applications are fan, pump and conveyor interlocks, status lamps, external contactors and motor-brake control where the standard relay outputs are already used up; the module is a plug-in expansion without extra wiring to a separate PLC.

Source document and RFQ

The data on this page was read from ABB’s user’s manual for the FIO-01, linked here, and from ABB’s product page for the module. Seven Star LLC quotes the FIO-01 from Muscat; send the drive type designation so that compatibility with the option slot and firmware can be checked. Confirm before ordering that the drive, control unit and firmware support this module, and note that older manuals may predate current drive generations. More options are in Automation Accessories, and the FPBA-01 adapter page shows a fieldbus option.

How the FIO-01 Digital I/O Extension Works

The FIO-01 plugs into an option slot on the drive control unit and connects to it through a 20-pin connector. Once the module is activated with the relevant drive parameter, its channels appear in the drive’s parameter structure in the same way as the built-in I/O. Each of the four digital channels can then be set to work as an input, for example a start, interlock or external fault signal, or as an output that reports a drive status such as ready, running or fault. The two relays are driven by the drive in the same way and can switch external contactors, lamps or brake circuits.

Because the I/O is handled directly by the drive, signals such as a motor-brake release or a run permissive do not need to pass through a separate PLC. This keeps simple machines simple and keeps time-critical interlocks close to the motor control.

Isolation and Mechanical Data

  • The four digital channels are galvanically isolated from the drive as one group.
  • The relay outputs have reinforced isolation between channels and between each channel and ground.
  • Module size about 32 × 106 × 63 mm; terminal connectors with 3.5 mm pitch for the digital I/O and 5.0 mm pitch for the relays.
  • Ambient limits are the same as for the drive in which the module is installed, as given in the drive hardware manual.

Installation & Maintenance of the FIO-01

  • Disconnect the drive from the supply and wait for the capacitors to discharge before opening the drive and fitting the module.
  • Insert the FIO-01 into a free option slot until the clips lock, then fit and tighten the fixing screw; the screw grounds the module and is essential for EMC performance.
  • Connect cable shields to the nearest ground point, and keep control cables away from motor and supply cables.
  • Fit RC snubbers or diodes on inductive loads switched by the relays where the varistors alone are not enough.
  • Activate the module and assign the I/O functions in the drive parameters, then power the module up again so that the new settings take effect.
  • Use the STATUS LED for first-line fault finding: green means normal, orange a missing initialisation or communication fault, and red a power fault.

Selection & Typical Applications in Oman & the GCC

Choose the FIO-01 when a drive needs more digital signals or relay contacts than its control unit provides. Check the drive’s ordering information or hardware manual to confirm that the FIO-01 is supported. In the region it is used on pump and fan drives in water and district cooling plants, conveyors in cement and mining operations, and hoists and cranes, where extra relays control brakes, external contactors and status beacons.

About brand

ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.
