ABB SACE Emax 2 Low Voltage Air Circuit Breaker
Overview
The ABB SACE Emax 2 is ABB’s range of low voltage air circuit breakers for main incomers, bus couplers, generator feeders and large outgoing feeders in LV switchboards. ABB describes the range as a multifunctional platform that has evolved from a simple circuit breaker into a power manager, combining protection, measurement, load control and connectivity in one device. Four frame sizes, E1.2, E2.2, E4.2 and E6.2, cover rated currents up to 6300 A, with breaking capacities from 42 kA to 150 kA, so compact switchgear can be built with shorter busbars of reduced cross-section.
Seven Star LLC supplies the ABB SACE Emax 2 to panel builders, EPC contractors, utilities and industrial end users in the Sultanate of Oman and across the GCC. Our team in Muscat helps you translate a single-line diagram into the right size, performance level, trip unit and accessory list, and we support spare and retrofit orders for switchboards already in service.
Operating Principle of the ABB SACE Emax 2
Each ABB SACE Emax 2 breaker carries a stored-energy operating mechanism and an electronic Ekip protection trip unit fed by its own current sensors. When the trip unit detects an overload, a selective short circuit, an instantaneous short circuit or an earth fault, it releases the mechanism and the main contacts open, with a maximum breaking time of 25 ms above Icw and 40 ms below Icw according to the catalogue. All automatic breakers are utilisation category B to IEC 60947-2, so their high short-time withstand current lets them stay closed while a downstream device clears a fault, which is the basis for full time-current selectivity in large installations.
Three trip unit levels are offered. Ekip Dip is the standard unit for overload, selective short-circuit, short-circuit and earth-fault protection. Ekip Touch and Ekip Hi-Touch add a colour touch-screen, Class 1 active energy measurement to IEC 61557-12, embedded Bluetooth for the EPiC mobile app and software packages that can be added later through ABB Ability Marketplace. Ekip G Touch and G Hi-Touch provide generator protection without separate relays. Advanced functions listed by ABB include load shedding, a patented power controller for peak demand, an embedded ATS, synchrocheck and adaptive protection for on-grid and off-grid operation.
Engineering Design of the ABB SACE Emax 2
Every size is available in fixed and withdrawable versions with three or four poles, and the breakers can be supplied from above or below. Protection trip units, auxiliary connections and main accessories are common across the range, and sizes E2.2 to E6.2 share the same height and depth, which simplifies switchboard design. The front shield has double insulation from live parts and shows open, closed, ready-to-close and spring charge status at a glance. Main accessories can be fitted without removing the shield completely, and push-in auxiliary terminals speed up wiring.
The withdrawable breaker runs on guide rails between racked-in, test-isolated and racked-out positions, with a lock in each position, while the fixed part has separate upper and lower shutters that can be padlocked from the front. Communication cartridges for Modbus, Profibus, DeviceNet, Modbus TCP, Profinet and EtherNet/IP fit on the terminal box, an IEC 61850 module links the ABB SACE Emax 2 to medium voltage automation systems, and the Ekip Com Hub connects to ABB Ability Energy and Asset Manager. A laser-etched QR code on the front gives quick access to the breaker’s data and documents.
Key Features of the ABB SACE Emax 2
The following points are taken from the first two chapters of the ABB SACE Emax 2 technical catalogue.
- Four sizes, E1.2, E2.2, E4.2 and E6.2, with rated uninterrupted currents from 250 A up to 6300 A.
- Rated ultimate breaking capacity from 42 kA up to 150 kA at 400–415 V, with Ics equal to 100% of Icu on most versions.
- Rated service voltage 690 V AC, insulation voltage 1000 V and impulse withstand 12 kV.
- Short-time withstand current up to 120 kA for 1 s on the E6.2, supporting full selectivity.
- Ekip Dip, Ekip Touch, Ekip Hi-Touch and Ekip G trip units in LI, LSI and LSIG versions.
- Class 1 active energy measurement to IEC 61557-12 for energy management and SCADA integration.
- Bluetooth access through the EPiC app, which ABB notes allows safer interaction with the device and reduces arc flash risk.
- Conformity with IEC 60947 and EN 60947, plus UL 1066 versions, CCC and UKCA marking and marine register approvals.
Industrial Applications
In Oman the ABB SACE Emax 2 is typically specified as the main incomer and bus coupler on 415 V switchboards fed from 11 kV/433 V transformers in commercial towers, hospitals, airports, data centres and district cooling plants around Muscat. The E1.2 frame suits incomers up to 1600 A, while E2.2 and E4.2 cover the 2000 to 4000 A transformer incomers common on industrial sites. For utility-scale solar plants, hotels and malls with standby generation, the embedded ATS and synchrocheck logic can reduce the number of separate controllers on the panel.
Heavy industry in Sohar and Duqm, including aluminium, steel, refining and petrochemical plants, uses the higher performance levels of the ABB SACE Emax 2, such as E4.2V and E6.2X at up to 150 kA, where large transformer banks drive prospective fault levels up. Seven Star LLC supplies the ABB SACE Emax 2 with engineering support in Muscat, and we can quote breakers, trip units, communication modules and retrofit kits for both new switchboards and plant upgrades.
