ABB ACQ580 Water and Wastewater Drive

Description

Overview

The ABB ACQ580 is ABB’s low voltage AC drive designed specifically for water and wastewater pumping. It belongs to the all-compatible drives portfolio and covers 0.75 to 500 kW, from wall-mounted units to drive modules and cabinet-built drives. ABB lists treatment plants, pumping stations, desalination plants, industrial wastewater facilities and irrigation as its home ground, controlling inflow, transfer, dosing, sludge, booster and submersible pumps as well as compressors, blowers, decanter centrifuges, mixers and fans. Built-in pump software, water-specific terminology on the control panel and an energy optimizer make it a purpose-built alternative to a general purpose drive.

Seven Star LLC supplies the ABB ACQ580 to water utilities, desalination operators, EPC contractors, irrigation schemes and industrial plants in the Sultanate of Oman and across the GCC. Our engineers in Muscat size the drive from the pump and motor data, recommend enclosure class and options for hot, dusty or humid sites, and quote complete pump control packages.

Operating Principle of the ABB ACQ580

Like any frequency converter, the ABB ACQ580 rectifies the mains supply, holds it on a DC link and inverts it to a variable voltage and frequency for the motor, so pump speed can follow the actual flow or pressure demand instead of running at full speed against a throttled valve. Scalar control handles simple process duty, while vector control gives accurate speed and torque for demanding applications, and the drive can run induction, permanent magnet, synchronous reluctance and permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance motors. ABB states that the energy optimizer, which adapts motor flux at partial load, can improve total efficiency by 1 to 20% depending on load torque and speed.

On top of motor control the drive runs pump application software. Intelligent Pump Control keeps stable conditions for up to eight parallel pumps and continues operating if one pump fails or is under maintenance. Single Pump Control and Soft Pump Control manage a drive-fed pump together with up to six direct-on-line pumps. Soft pipe filling limits pressure peaks and water hammer, quick ramps protect submersible pump bearings, level control manages tanks and sumps, and sensorless flow and head calculation estimates flow without an external meter. Dry run protection, cavitation control, minimum and maximum pressure protection and a pump cleaning sequence protect the hydraulics.

Engineering Design of the ABB ACQ580

The range is built from five variants. ACQ580-01 wall-mounted drives cover 0.75 to 250 kW at 380 to 480 V (and up to 75 kW at 230 V) in IP21 or IP55 enclosures that share the same footprint, with options for an integrated main switch, an EMC C1 filter, flange mounting and an IP20 version without a conduit box. ACQ580-04 drive modules cover 250 to 500 kW for cabinet builders, ACQ580-07 cabinet-built drives cover 75 to 500 kW in IP21, IP42 or IP54, and the ultra-low harmonic ACQ580-31 (4 to 110 kW) and ACQ580-34 (132 to 355 kW) keep input current distortion below 3% THDi without external filters or multipulse transformers.

Every ABB ACQ580 includes an integrated choke, an EMC filter (C2 for -01 and -31, C3 for -04 and -34), embedded Modbus RTU, Safe Torque Off rated SIL 3 / PL e and the assistant control panel with a USB port for the Drive composer PC tool. Standard I/O comprises two analogue inputs, two analogue outputs, six digital inputs and three relay outputs. Option slots accept fieldbus adapters such as PROFIBUS DP, PROFINET IO, EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP, CANopen and DeviceNet, plus I/O extensions and the ATEX-certified CPTC-02 thermistor protection module.

Industrial Applications

In Oman the ABB ACQ580 fits naturally into the water chain: borehole and well-field pumps in the interior, seawater intake and RO feed pumps at desalination plants along the Batinah and Sharqiyah coasts, potable water booster stations around Muscat, and sewage lift stations feeding treatment works. Level control and multipump functions let one drive manage a sump with several pumps, while the dry run and minimum pressure protections are valuable where intake levels vary or pipelines run long distances across the desert.

The ABB ACQ580 also serves district cooling plants, irrigation for agriculture and landscaping projects, and industrial effluent plants in Sohar and Duqm, where aeration blowers and sludge pumps benefit from speed control. For generator-fed or remote sites, the ultra-low harmonic versions help keep the supply within harmonic limits. Seven Star LLC supplies the ABB ACQ580 on request with engineering support in Muscat, including fieldbus, I/O and enclosure options.
