The AW is a combined filter and pressure regulator in SMC’s modular air preparation line. The body size is in the name: AW20 is the smaller unit and AW40 the larger, and the digits after the dash give the port size. A part number such as AW40-04-A therefore describes body size, port and design generation in one string. The VX2 is a direct-operated two-port solenoid valve for shutting off air, water, oil or steam, depending on the body and seal materials chosen.
Ordering SMC parts: what we need
Give the complete SMC part number from the label, including thread prefix, options and the final suffix letter. For AW units state gauge, drain type and bracket if you need them. How do I read an SMC AW filter regulator part number?
Take AW40-04-A as an example. AW is the filter regulator, 40 is the body size, 04 is the port size (1/2 inch), and the last letter marks the design generation. A letter before the port size indicates the thread type, and further letters add options such as a gauge, bracket or automatic drain. Send the whole string from the label.
Are older and newer generations of SMC AW units interchangeable?
Not automatically. SMC has revised the AW series more than once, and the suffix letter at the end of the part number tells the generations apart. Dimensions, modular spacers and accessories can differ between them. If your unit joins other modules in a combination, tell us the part numbers of the neighbors so the replacement and its spacer match.
What must I specify for an SMC VX2 solenoid valve?
The fluid first, because it decides the body and seal materials. Then port size, orifice size, normally closed or normally open function, coil voltage and the electrical entry. The VX2 part number encodes all of these. If you only have an old valve, send a photo of the label on the coil and the marking on the body.
What does SMC issue as documentation for these components?
