ABB ACS355-03E-12A5-4 Machinery Drive 5.5 kW 12.5 A

Description

A 5.5 kW ACS355 for 400 V machines

ACS355-03E-12A5-4 is an ABB ACS355 machinery drive for three-phase 380 to 480 V supplies. The catalogue gives it 5.5 kW (7.5 hp) at 12.5 A continuous output current on frame R3, a body 169 mm wide with a standard depth of 169 mm. Frame R3 starts here, at 5.5 kW, for machine builders who need a larger motor on a drive that is still 169 mm wide.

The ACS355 is modular. Plug-in fieldbus adapters, I/O extensions, a FlashDrop tool and two optional control panels are available, and the drive ships with a panel cover. Find sister ratings under AC drives or read the ABB ACS355 overview.

Sizing the ACS355-03E-12A5-4 for your motor

The rating assumes a maximum ambient temperature of 40 degrees C. With a 10% derating the drive can run at 50 degrees C, and the catalogue notes 1% derating per 100 m between 1000 and 2000 m altitude. Nominal current is 12.5 A, overload 18.8 A for one minute in ten.

Cabinet designers should allow 161 W of losses and 52 m3/h of airflow. Fuse the supply with 25 A gG or 30 A UL Class T. Accessory codes for this drive: CHK-03 (input choke), NOCH-0016-6x (output choke), RFI-33 (external RFI filter).

Type designation and variants

Each part of ACS355-03E-12A5-4 has a meaning: series ACS355, 03 = 3-phase, E = EMC filter connected (50 Hz), 12A5 = rating, 4 = 380 to 480 V. Where a panel is wanted add +J400 (ACS-CP-A) or +J404 (ACS-CP-C). The catalogue states to choose one option only.

Weight: 2.5 kg in IP20, 3.1 kg with the NEMA 1 box. Depth is 169 mm in IP20 (195 mm with an MREL, MPOW or MTAC option) and 177 mm with NEMA 1. An IP66 / IP67 / UL Type 4X variant (+B063) is listed for this rating on frame R3.

Installing the ACS355 frame R3 in a cabinet

In its IP20 form the ACS355-03E-12A5-4 is a cabinet drive. Mount it vertically on a metal mounting plate with the cooling air entering at the bottom and leaving at the top, and keep the free space above and below the drive that the ABB hardware manual specifies. When several drives share one enclosure, avoid placing one directly above another so that warm exhaust air is not drawn into the next drive. The cabinet cooling must remove the drive losses listed above plus the heat from contactors, power supplies and other equipment in the same panel.

Use a symmetrical screened motor cable, bond the screen at the drive clamp and at the motor terminal box, and keep control wiring for safe torque off, analogue references and digital inputs in separate routes from the power cables. Because the E variant has its EMC filter connected, check the earthing system of the site before energising; ABB documents when the filter must be disconnected, for example on IT (ungrounded) networks.

Commissioning with the control panel or FlashDrop

A typical start-up begins by entering the motor nameplate data, selecting the control mode and setting acceleration and deceleration ramps to suit the machine. The assistant control panel guides the user through these settings, while the FlashDrop tool can copy a tested parameter set to several drives without power applied, which suits machine builders producing a series of identical machines. If a fieldbus adapter is fitted, configure the communication parameters and test the control and status words with the motor running unloaded first. Test the safe torque off inputs as part of the machine safety validation, and if the application uses the built-in brake chopper, connect and size the braking resistor according to the ABB tables.

Selection checks before ordering

  • Motor nameplate current against the 12.5 A continuous rating and the overload cycle of the load.
  • Supply voltage, earthing system and whether the EMC filter should remain connected.
  • Control interface: I/O only, or one of the plug-in fieldbus adapters.
  • Enclosure: IP20 in a cabinet, the NEMA 1 kit, or the IP66 / IP67 / UL Type 4X variant listed above.

Heat, dust and humidity in Omani plants

The derating figures on this page are especially relevant in Oman and the GCC, where control rooms without air conditioning and outdoor panels can exceed 40 °C for much of the summer. Apply the temperature derating when sizing the drive, and design the cabinet ventilation or cooling for the hottest month rather than for an average day. Dust drawn in by cabinet fans settles on the drive heat sink and reduces its cooling, so filtered inlets and regular cleaning of the heat sink and fan are part of good maintenance. In humid coastal locations, avoid condensation inside the panel when equipment is switched off for long periods, for example with an anti-condensation heater controlled by a thermostat or hygrostat. Check terminal tightness and inspect the cooling fan during scheduled shutdowns.

About brand

ABB, formed in 1988 and headquartered in Zurich, covers an unusually long stretch of a plant's equipment list, from the flowmeter and analyzer in the field to the drive, breaker and protection relay in the electrical room.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier serving Oman and the GCC. Our ABB listing concentrates on measurement and analytics: ABB flowmeters, liquid analysis sensors and systems, level and pressure instruments. It also includes valve actuators, low voltage circuit breakers, ABB drives, soft starters and protection relays.

ABB product families on this page

Flow measurement includes ABB electromagnetic, Coriolis, vortex and swirl meters, sold under names such as ProcessMaster, AquaMaster, CoriolisMaster and SwirlMaster. Liquid analysis covers pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen sensors with their transmitters. SensyTemp TSP sensors handle temperature. On the electrical side the listing has ACS355 machinery drives, the ACS550 general purpose drive, the ACQ580 for water and wastewater and the ACS880-01 industrial drive, with fieldbus adapters such as the FPBA-01 for PROFIBUS DP. Protection and switching products include SACE Tmax XT molded case breakers, SACE Emax 2 air circuit breakers, PSR soft starters and the REM615 and RET615 relays.

Where ABB instruments and drives are used

Water and wastewater plants use the electromagnetic flowmeters, analyzers and ACQ580 drives together. Oil and gas, power and chemical plants specify the Coriolis and vortex meters, pressure and level transmitters and the 615 series relays for motor and transformer feeders. The drives run pumps, fans, conveyors and compressors in almost every industry.

Ordering ABB parts: what we need

For drives send the full type code from the rating label, for example ACS355-03E-05A6-4, plus the serial number if it is a replacement. For instruments send the complete order code, measuring span, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol and the hazardous area approval. For breakers give frame size, rated current, breaking capacity, number of poles, trip unit and fixed or withdrawable version.
