ABB FEA-03 F-series Extension Adapter for ABB Drives

Description

Adding F-series modules away from the drive

The FEA-03 is a DIN-rail adapter that lets fieldbus or I/O modules from ABB’s F-series be mounted outside the drive. It connects to the drive through a fibre-optic DDCS link and holds one or two modules.

This helps when the drive option slots are used up, when the drive is a module in a cabinet with no free slot, or when the network connection should sit at a convenient location on the rail.

Link and power

The fibre link uses Versatile Link components at 10 MBd, which also gives galvanic separation between drive and module. The adapter needs a 24 V DC supply, plus or minus 10%, and is rated IP20.

The manual references IEC 61800-5-1 for safety and IEC 61800-3 for EMC, which is useful for documentation packs.

Where it fits

Typical use is a large cabinet drive that talks to a plant network through a module placed in the control section.

Plan the fibre routing and bend radius, and a suitable 24 V source.

Selection and planning notes

Fibre-optic links are insensitive to electrical noise and give isolation between the drive and the network equipment, which is helpful in cabinets with large power sections. The cost of this benefit is attention to fibre handling: respect the minimum bend radius, keep connectors clean and label the transmit and receive ends so they are not swapped. A swapped pair is the most common reason for a link fault at first power-up.

Drives that use F-series modules are listed in AC drives, and the ACS580 platform is described on the ABB ACS580 page. Tell us the module types you plan to mount and we will check them against the manual.

Commissioning order matters with remote modules. Power the 24 V supply first, check that the adapter shows a healthy link indication, then enable the module in the drive parameters and only then configure the network on the module itself. When the drive reports a communication loss with the adapter, the cause is usually the fibre pair, the 24 V source or a loose DIN-rail ground rather than the module. Record the fibre lengths used so replacements can be cut to match.

Documents and quotation

Seven Star LLC supplies the FEA-03 on request from Muscat; send the drive type, control program version and the network details, and we reply with availability and lead time. The user manual (3AUA0000115811, revision C) is linked on this page.

Confirm before ordering: which drives support the DDCS link, the module types you will plug in, the 24 V supply and the fibre length.

About brand

ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

ABB company profile

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.
