ABB ACS-AP-I Industrial Assistant Control Panel

Description

ACS-AP-I: the industrial drive panel

The ACS-AP-I is the Assistant control panel that ABB lists for its industrial drives; the product page calls it the ACS880 control panel. According to ABB’s user’s manual it also works with ACS380, ACS480, ACS530, ACS560, ACS580, ACQ580 and ACS860 drives, which makes it the widest-compatibility member of the ACS-AP family. The panel is an accessory with an LCD, keypad, RJ-45 drive link and USB port; it does not contain any drive power electronics.

Working with the panel on industrial drives

A single panel can serve a panel bus of up to 32 nodes, provided the combined cable length stays within 100 m; when you pick a drive in the list its green LED blinks once. Everything is reached through the Menu: parameter lists, start-up assistants, energy efficiency tools, the event log, history graphs, backups and system information. A parameter backup can be stored in the panel and written to a replacement or sister drive, so a spare drive is configured in minutes. Status is shown by the LED: continuous green normal, blinking green warning, continuous red fault, blinking red stop and restart needed.

Installation notes and limits

Fitting takes a few seconds: hook the lower edge into the drive slot, tilt the panel back and press the top until it latches. For PC tools the panel acts as a USB adapter through its Type B mini USB port, limited to 3 m of cable and temporary service use. Door mounting uses a DPMP-01 platform for IP55 or a DPMP-02/03 platform for IP65. Environmental limits are -20 to +55 degrees C in operation, -40 to +70 degrees C in storage, 95% humidity without condensation and 4000 m altitude. Check the exact panel and firmware compatibility in the manual of your drive before ordering, because the compatibility table in ABB’s panel manual is stated as not comprehensive.

Source document and RFQ

Technical data was read from the linked ABB user’s manual for the ACS-AP and ACH-AP panels and from the ABB product page for the ACS-AP-I. Seven Star LLC quotes the ACS-AP-I from Muscat once it knows which drive the panel will serve. Before ordering, check in the drive manual that this panel type is the one the drive supports, and decide whether you also need a DPMP door platform or an RJ-45 cable. Other accessories are listed in Automation Accessories, and the ABB ACS580 drive is one of the drives that uses this panel. If a drive is replaced later, the same panel can be moved to the new unit and a stored backup written back, so keeping a spare ACS-AP-I on site shortens the repair time of a critical line.

About brand

ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.

Ordering ABB products: what we need

Send the full type code from the nameplate (for example ACS580-01-046A-4 or 266DSH...) and, for spare parts, the ABB ID number (such as 3BSE008508R1 or 1SBL176001R3010). For drives, add the motor power and current and any option codes (+...). For instruments, send the complete order code, which sets range, materials and approvals. Baldor motors are listed on their own brand page.

Facts checked against ABB company filings and published histories of ASEA and Brown, Boveri & Cie, October 2026.
