Pilz PNOZ s3 Compact Safety Relay for E-STOP and Safety Gates

Description

Overview

The Pilz PNOZ s3 is a compact safety relay from the PNOZsigma range that provides a safety-related interruption of a safety circuit. At only 17.5 mm width it still offers two positive-guided safety contacts, a semiconductor output, selectable start modes and plug-in terminals. It is used to monitor E-STOP pushbuttons, safety gates and light grids or safety switches with detection of shorts across contacts, and the manual states that the product meets the requirements of EN 60947-5-1 and EN 60204-1.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Pilz PNOZ s3 to machine builders, panel shops and plant owners in the Sultanate of Oman and the wider GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. The Pilz PNOZ s3 datasheet values are given in the technical details chapter of the operating manual attached to this page, which also contains wiring diagrams and safety characteristic data, and our team can confirm whether the screw-terminal type (product ID 750103) or the spring-terminal type (product ID 751103) is the right order code for your cabinet.

Operating Principle

The Pilz PNOZ s3 uses a redundant circuit with built-in self-monitoring. The safety function remains effective in the case of a component failure, and the correct opening and closing of the relays that realize the safety function is tested automatically in each on-off cycle. When the input circuit is closed and the start condition is met, the two safety contacts close; when an E-STOP is pressed or a gate is opened, the contacts open in a typical delay of 10 ms with a maximum of 20 ms, which keeps the stopping reaction short.

The operating mode of the Pilz PNOZ s3 is selected by a rotary switch under the front cover. Single-channel operation gives no redundancy in the input circuit but still detects earth faults, while dual-channel operation provides a redundant input circuit and detects earth faults and short circuits in the input circuit. A further dual-channel setting also detects shorts across contacts, which suits light grids and safety switches with semiconductor outputs. For the start behaviour the user can choose automatic start, manual start, monitored start with rising edge, monitored start with falling edge, or automatic start with a start-up test that checks whether closed safety gates are opened and closed again after power-up.

Engineering Design of the Pilz PNOZ s3

The Pilz PNOZ s3 uses a polycarbonate housing with a transparent front and a yellow label area, and the six LEDs for supply voltage, input status of channel 1 and 2, switch status, start circuit and error make fault finding straightforward without a laptop. The plug-in connection terminals are available as screw terminals for conductors from 0.25 to 2.5 mm² with a tightening torque of 0.5 Nm, or as spring-loaded terminals for 0.2 to 2.5 mm², and they can be removed without disturbing the wiring when a unit is replaced. The Pilz PNOZ s3 housing is 98 mm high with screw terminals and 100 mm with spring terminals, 120 mm deep and 140 g in weight, and it mounts in any position.

A connector on the side of the Pilz PNOZ s3 lets the user attach one PNOZsigma contact expansion module to increase the number of instantaneous safety contacts, and external contactors or relays can also be used. The datasheet in the manual gives the contact ratings, the maximum cable resistance of 30 Ω for single-channel use and 60 Ω for dual-channel use without short detection, and the external fuse values of 10 A quick or 6 A slow to protect the contacts. The installation is rated for ambient temperatures from -10 to +55 °C in a control cabinet with IP54 or better, and the housing itself is IP40.

Key Features

The Pilz PNOZ s3 concentrates the essential safety relay functions in a very compact housing. Its main capabilities are:

  • Only 17.5 mm wide, saving DIN-rail space in crowded control cabinets.
  • Two positive-guided instantaneous safety contacts plus one semiconductor output.
  • Safety rating up to PL e (Category 4) according to EN ISO 13849-1 and SIL 3 / SIL CL 3 according to EN IEC 61508 and 62061.
  • Rotary switch for single-channel or dual-channel operation, with or without detection of shorts across contacts.
  • Automatic start, manual start, monitored start (rising or falling edge) and start-up test selectable.
  • Six status LEDs showing supply, input channels, switch status, start circuit and errors.
  • Plug-in screw or spring-loaded terminals, and a side connector for one PNOZsigma contact expansion module.
  • Short response: delay-on de-energisation with E-STOP typically 10 ms, maximum 20 ms.

Industrial Applications

The Pilz PNOZ s3 is intended for standard machine safety tasks: E-STOP circuits on conveyors and packaging lines, interlocked guard doors on machine tools and presses, and light grids at robot cells and palletizers. In Oman and the GCC it also appears in motor control centres, fabrication yards in Sohar, port handling equipment in Duqm and Salalah and utility skids where a compact, certified relay saves valuable DIN-rail space. Its PL e and SIL 3 characteristics make it a suitable building block for demanding safety functions when the complete safety loop is validated.

The manual of the Pilz PNOZ s3 stresses that the SIL or PL of a safety function is not identical to the values of the individual products, so every function must be assessed as a whole, and a risk assessment is required before use. Engineers who need to compare architectures can also look at the Phoenix Contact PSR-SCP safety relay, the ABB AC500-S safety PLC or the HIMA HIQuad safety PLC system in our catalog. Seven Star LLC can help choose between relay-based safety and a configurable controller, and can support spare-part planning for the S-series terminals.

About brand
Yellow PNOZ housings are a familiar sight in machine control cabinets. Pilz, founded in 1948 and based in Ostfildern, Germany, built its name on the PNOZ safety relay and now covers safe automation from single relays to configurable controllers. Seven Star LLC lists Pilz PNOZsigma safety relays and the PNOZmulti 2 base unit, and supplies them to machine builders and plants in Oman and the GCC.

Pilz PNOZ families listed here

PNOZsigma relays are narrow units whose operating mode and timing are set with rotary switches on the front. The PNOZ s3 monitors E-STOP buttons and safety gates. The PNOZ s4 has three safety contacts and one auxiliary contact, and the PNOZ s5 adds time-delayed safety contacts with an adjustable delay. The PNOZ m B0 is the base unit of the PNOZmulti 2 configurable safety controller: its safety functions are drawn in the PNOZmulti Configurator software instead of being hard-wired.

Where Pilz safety relays are used

They are found on packaging lines, presses, conveyors and process skids, wherever an emergency stop, guard door, light curtain or two-hand station must remove power safely.
