Honeywell VersaFlow Clamp-on Ultrasonic Flow Meter
Description
VersaFlow Clamp-on ultrasonic flow meter overview
The Honeywell VersaFlow Clamp-on is a transit-time style ultrasonic flow meter whose sensors strap to the outside of an existing pipe. Nothing enters the process, so the line does not have to be cut, drained or shut down to fit it. Seven Star LLC supplies VersaFlow Clamp-on meters in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat, and this page explains what the range covers so that an enquiry can be specified correctly.
VersaFlow Clamp-on is a product line rather than a single ordering code. The manufacturer’s catalogue lists a fixed-sensor Sonic 1000 meter for sizes from 1/2 in to 160 in, and a TWS 9000 converter with basic I/O. Sensor size class, cable length, temperature option and approvals are chosen when the meter is configured, which is why the sections below focus on how to define the duty rather than on a single list of codes.

How the VersaFlow Clamp-on measures flow
Two ultrasonic transducers are clamped on the outside of the pipe, a known distance apart. Each one alternately sends and receives a sound pulse through the pipe wall and the liquid. A pulse travelling with the flow arrives slightly earlier than one travelling against it, and the converter calculates flow velocity from that difference in transit time. Multiplying by the internal pipe area gives volumetric flow.
Because the sensors never touch the liquid, there is no pressure drop, no wetted material to match to the chemistry and no leak path. The trade-off is that the result depends on knowing the pipe accurately. Wall thickness, outer diameter and pipe material must be entered correctly, and the pipe wall, any liner and the liquid must carry sound well. This is why the manufacturer states that internal and external coatings must be fully bonded to the pipe, and why the meter suits liquids with limited solids or gas content. The converter reports diagnostics such as speed of sound, signal quality and signal-to-noise ratio so the installer can judge whether the measurement is healthy.
VersaFlow Clamp-on sensor classes and path configuration
The size ranges in the table above are not interchangeable. Small sensors suit tubing and small process lines from DN15 to DN100, medium sensors cover DN50 to DN400, and large sensors reach DN200 to DN4000, which makes clamp-on one of the few technologies that can meter a very large water main without cutting it. X-mode is a separate configuration for DN200 to DN1250 pipes in which the sound path crosses the pipe in a way that suits larger bores; confirm with us which mode your pipe and sensor spacing require.
The standard converter supports a single path on one pipe or a dual path, which can measure two paths of the same pipe for better averaging or two separate pipes. A single path is simplest. A dual path is worth considering where the flow profile is disturbed by bends or valves close to the meter, or where one converter should serve two lines.
System fit and related VersaFlow models
The VersaFlow family covers more than one technology. The Clamp-on is the non-intrusive option; the VersaFlow Mag electromagnetic range is the in-line alternative for conductive liquids when the line can be opened, and the Sonic family appears in the manufacturer’s documents alongside it. Where a plant already uses VersaFlow converters and software, the Clamp-on adds measuring points without adding cut-ins to the process. The converter supplies standard current, pulse and status outputs and HART communication, with Modbus RS485 as an option, so it connects to a typical DCS or PLC without a gateway.
Honeywell also publishes a Universal Application Data Sheet for the VersaFlow family, a form used to record fluid, flow range, temperature, pressure, pipe size and installation details. Filling it in is the quickest way to get a correct configuration and a quotation.
VersaFlow Clamp-on selection and ordering checklist
- Pipe outer diameter, wall thickness and material, plus the thickness and bond quality of any liner or coating.
- Fluid, its temperature range and whether it carries solids or gas bubbles; liquids with limited solids give the best signal.
- Whether temperatures exceed 120°C, which requires the XT high-temperature option up to 200°C.
- Single path or dual path, and the sensor size class that matches your line.
- Cable length from sensors to converter, up to 25 m with extension cable and splitter box.
- Power supply, outputs, HART or Modbus communication, and the hazardous area approval needed.
- Available straight pipe: about 10 DN upstream and 5 DN downstream.
Installation and commissioning of a VersaFlow Clamp-on
Pick a location with a full pipe, enough straight run and accessible bare pipe surface. Remove loose paint, rust and scale at the sensor positions, apply acoustic coupling compound, and fix the sensors at the spacing calculated by the converter from your pipe data. The calculated spacing depends on the entered diameter, wall thickness and fluid, so entering inaccurate pipe data is the single most common reason for a poor reading.
After mounting, check signal strength and signal-to-noise figures on the display. A weak signal can point to a lined pipe with a poor bond, a pipe that is not full, entrained gas or incorrect spacing. Re-seat the sensors if needed, and record the pipe settings with the commissioning report. Maintenance is limited to checking that the coupling compound has not dried out in high-temperature service, that the sensor clamps remain tight and that cable glands are sealed. Where the meter will be used as a check meter, the application can be left in place permanently or moved from line to line.
Typical VersaFlow Clamp-on applications in Oman and the GCC
Clamp-on ultrasonic meters are commonly chosen where cutting into the line is costly or not allowed. Typical Gulf uses include cooling water and chilled water circuits in power and district cooling, potable and raw water mains, desalination intake and product lines, and heat or energy measurement on hot water loops. In refineries, petrochemical plants and oil and gas facilities, the meter can verify flow on hydrocarbon or chemical lines and support leak detection without opening a pressurised pipe. Because the sensor mounts outside the pipe, it is also useful for temporary balancing and audit work, and the ingress rating, with an IP68 option on the sensor, allows installation in hot, dusty and humid plant areas. Shade the converter from direct sun where the site allows.

Gas detection uses two basic approaches. Point detectors such as the Sensepoint XCD measure the gas at one location, with a catalytic or infrared sensor for flammable gas and an electrochemical cell for toxic gas such as H2S. Open path detectors such as the Searchline Excel send an infrared beam across an area up to a few hundred metres long and detect a gas cloud anywhere along it. Infrared sensors cannot be poisoned the way catalytic beads can, which matters on sites with silicones or H2S.
Where Honeywell products are used
In Oman and the GCC, Honeywell gas detectors protect wellheads, gas plants, refineries and tank farms. Elster meters and flow computers measure gas at city gate stations and in industry. Gent systems are installed in commercial buildings, hospitals and hotels, and Chadwick-Helmuth balancers are used by helicopter operators.

FAQ
Questions about the Honeywell VersaFlow Clamp-on Ultrasonic Flow Meter
Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.
01What pipe sizes can the VersaFlow Clamp-on measure?
The range is offered from DN15 to DN4000 (1/2 to 160 in). Small sensors cover DN15 to DN100, medium DN50 to DN400, large DN200 to DN4000, and X-mode DN200 to DN1250.
02What is the maximum process temperature?
The standard version covers −40 to +120°C. The XT version, available as an option, extends this to +200°C (+392°F).
03What straight pipe length is recommended?
The listed recommendation is about 10 DN of straight pipe upstream and about 5 DN downstream. Shorter runs reduce confidence in the reading, so tell us the available lengths.
04Can it measure through a lined pipe?
Yes, if the internal or external coating or liner is fully bonded to the pipe wall. A liner that has separated from the wall blocks the sound signal and prevents measurement.
05What communication does the converter offer?
Current, pulse and status outputs are standard with a control input, and HART communication is available. Modbus RS485 is an option.
