AUMA SQRVEx Variable-Speed Explosion-Proof Modulating Actuator
Overview
The AUMA SQRVEx is the top-of-range hazardous-area part-turn actuator in the AUMA SQ family. It combines three properties that rarely appear together: certification for potentially explosive atmospheres, a continuously adjustable operating time and a rating for modulating duty. The SQRVEx .2 part-turn actuators are designed for modulating duty, class C, at S4 – 25 %, with up to 1,500 starts per hour. The torque range runs from 150 Nm to 2,400 Nm, of which 75 Nm to 1,200 Nm is available as modulating torque, and the operating time for 90 degrees can be set between 4 s and 360 s.

Operating Principle
The AUMA SQRVEx is a motor, gear stage and splined output shaft in a flameproof, increased-safety construction, driven by ACVExC controls that regulate the motor speed electronically. Because speed is a software parameter, the actuator can run slowly while it follows a setpoint and faster when a safety signal arrives. AUMA lists EMERGENCY behaviour and safety behaviour with separate specified operating times, and an operating time profile that avoids pressure surge, so the stroke is shaped by the controls rather than by the physical limits of the gearbox.
Modulating duty means the drive follows a position setpoint, stops, holds and corrects again, many times per hour. Within the explosion-protection concept the AUMA SQRVEx is built for this duty, and the controls add a process controller (PID), fieldbus control with programmable behaviour in case of emergency or communication loss, operation data logging and a Bluetooth interface to a notebook and Android tablet. The combination allows closed-loop regulation to be moved from a separate controller into the actuator itself where appropriate.
Engineering Design of the AUMA SQRVEx
The AUMA SQRVEx is built on the SQ .2 platform with limit and torque sensing, mains connection in 1-phase and 3-phase versions, handwheel for manual operation and a mechanical position indicator. The electrical connection uses the AUMA plug/socket connector, with terminals as an option, and cable entries are available in different versions. Valve attachments follow DIN and ISO standards, the swing angle is 75 to 105 degrees, enclosure protection is IP68 and corrosion protection is KS. Ambient temperature is −30 °C to +40 °C or +60 °C according to the certified configuration.
Options include intermediate position switches, switches in tandem version, a position transmitter and a magnetic limit and torque transmitter. The controls provide programmable potential-free output contacts for status signalling. Industrial Applications
The AUMA SQRVEx suits flow, pressure and level control in classified areas where valve movement itself must be managed. Typical uses include control valves on gas processing and compression trains, regulation of product transfer at terminals and tank farms, cooling water and utility control in refineries, and positioning of large butterfly valves in fuel handling at power stations. In each case, the variable operating time allows gentle correction in normal operation, while the separate emergency time allows a rapid move to the safe position without a second actuator.

AUMA actuator and gearbox types
SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1.
