AUMA SA and GK Multi-Turn Actuator with Bevel Gearbox
Overview
AUMA SA and GK describes the combination of an AUMA SA multi-turn actuator, from SA 07.2 to SA 16.2 and SA 25.1 to SA 48.1, with a GK bevel gearbox. The bevel gear turns the direction of the drive through 90 degrees, so the actuator can sit alongside or above a valve instead of directly on its stem axis, and at the same time multiplies the output torque considerably. The AUMA SA and GK combination covers valve torques from 120 Nm up to 16,000 Nm and is used on gate valves, globe valves and other multi-turn valves where space or stem orientation rules out a straight-through actuator mounting.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the AUMA SA and GK combination to water utilities, desalination plants, power producers and oil and gas operators across the Sultanate of Oman and the wider GCC. Because the actuator and gearbox must be matched on input torque, reduction ratio, flange size and actuator weight, we configure the pairing for you and deliver it as one qualified, documented package from Muscat.
Working Principle of the AUMA SA and GK
In the AUMA SA and GK combination the SA actuator’s motor drives the GK input shaft through the actuator output drive. Inside the gearbox a pair of bevel gears turns the rotation through a right angle and reduces speed according to the selected ratio, from 1:1 on the smallest sizes to 22:1 on the largest. Output torque rises by the ratio multiplied by the gearbox efficiency; AUMA publishes a conversion factor for each size and ratio so that the required actuator input torque can be determined precisely, with an extra 15 % input torque allowance recommended for new gearboxes because of their initially lower efficiency.
Torque and position sensing stay in the actuator, so the SA’s tripping torque protection and limit switching act on the combination as they would on a directly mounted actuator, with the conversion factor taken into account during commissioning. If the process calls for it, the gearbox input shaft can also be operated by a handwheel, which gives a manual drive that is independent of the motor. The practical result is a drive that can reach awkward valve positions and still deliver the high, controlled torque required for gate valves.
Engineering Design of the AUMA SA and GK
The GK range is built in the sizes GK 10.2, 14.2, 14.6, 16.2, 25.2, 30.2, 35.2 and 40.2, with output flanges to EN ISO 5210 from F10 to F40 and DIN 3210 from G0 to G7. Weights range from roughly 8.5 kg for the GK 10.2 to about 250 kg for the GK 40.2, and each size has a maximum permissible actuator weight, from 40 kg on the smallest input flange up to 160 kg on the larger flanges. The input shaft is stainless steel, and the maximum permissible input speed is 240 rpm.
The AUMA SA and GK combination is supplied in enclosure protection IP68 with corrosion protection class KS and a double-layer powder coating, suitable for coastal and humid environments. A handwheel with ball handle in aluminium is standard, with cast-iron and lockable versions as options, and a power-tool emergency operation interface is available. Electrical connection follows the SA actuator, using the AUMA plug/socket connector with terminals as an option, and valve attachments follow DIN and ISO standards.
Key Features
The following characteristics summarise why the AUMA SA and GK combination is specified for demanding gate and globe valve installations:
- A 90-degree bevel gearbox lets the actuator be mounted beside or above the valve instead of directly on the stem axis.
- Output torques from 120 Nm to 16,000 Nm are reached through reduction ratios from 1:1 to 22:1 across eight gearbox sizes.
- Direct combination with SA 07.2 to SA 16.2 and SA 25.1 to SA 48.1 actuators keeps one control philosophy and one spares family.
- A handwheel on the gearbox gives mechanical manual operation for setting and emergency use.
- Stainless steel input shaft and IP68 housing protect the gearbox in wet and corrosive plants.
- Corrosion protection class KS with double-layer powder coating suits coastal, high-salinity and high-humidity sites.
- Valve attachments to EN ISO 5210 F10 to F40 and DIN 3210 G0 to G7 cover the full range of industrial gate and globe valves.
- Electrical connection through the AUMA plug/socket connector gives fast, reliable replacement and commissioning.
Industrial Applications
The AUMA SA and GK is typically chosen for large gate valves in water transmission and desalination plants, where handwheel stems point upward but the actuator has to be offset to clear walkways or pipework, and for buried or chamber-mounted valves operated through an extension. In power stations and refineries it drives isolation gate valves and heavy globe valves in cooling-water, fire-water and process lines. In the Sultanate of Oman it is applicable to the pump stations and reservoir inlet valves of regional water networks, the cooling circuits of the Sohar and Duqm industrial zones, and the oil and gas facilities of the interior.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the AUMA SA and GK with full selection support: we convert the valve torque into actuator input torque using the gearbox factor, check the permissible actuator weight and flange, and recommend whether a bevel (GK), spur (GST) or worm (GHT) gearbox is best for the installation geometry. Related AUMA products worth comparing with the AUMA SA and GK include the AUMA GK, the AUMA GST spur gearbox and the AUMA SA and GHT, which cover neighbouring duty types and sizes.
