AUMA SQR 14.2 Modulating Part-Turn Actuator

Description

Overview

AUMA SQR 14.2 is the largest modulating actuator in the SQR .2 range. Its tripping torque starts at 1,200 Nm and reaches 2,400 Nm, and it can modulate with up to 1,200 Nm at S4 – 25 % or 840 Nm at S4 – 50 %. These are the figures needed for very large control butterfly valves, where even routine positioning requires more torque than most complete actuators can deliver.

Seven Star LLC, the official trusted supplier and regional supplier for AUMA, supplies the AUMA SQR 14.2 to major infrastructure and industrial projects in Oman and the GCC. Valves of this class are specified on seawater and cooling systems with strict commissioning schedules, so we confirm the torque data, flange drawings and controls before quoting.

Control at the Top of the Range

With four operating times at 50 Hz, 36, 48, 72 and 100 seconds, the AUMA SQR 14.2 is the slowest-moving member of the SQR family, reflecting the inertia and hydraulic forces of very large valves. At the 36 s ratio the tripping torque is limited to 1,800 Nm with 900 Nm modulating at S4 – 25 %; at 48 s and slower the full 2,400 Nm trip and 1,200 Nm modulating ratings apply, and the S4 – 50 % values are 1,680 Nm and 840 Nm.

The minimum pulse on reversal runs from 250 ms at 36 s to 600 ms at 100 s, and same-direction pulses are 50 ms. Up to 1,500 starts per hour are permitted. In practice, a loop on a valve this size is slow by nature, and the controller should be tuned with a deadband that does not request more reversals than the process needs, which preserves both the actuator and the valve seals.

Engineering Design of the AUMA SQR 14.2

The valve interface of the AUMA SQR 14.2 is F14 as standard with F16 as an option, and the coupling accepts shafts up to 60 mm cylindrical and 46 mm square or two-flat. The 200 mm handwheel needs 51 or 70 turns for 90 degrees, so manual movement is only practical as a setting or last-resort measure, and the position indicator keeps the valve state visible without power.

The unit weighs about 44 kg, or 55 kg with base and lever, the heaviest SQR frame. Standard protection is IP68 with KS coating and a -30 °C to +70 °C ambient range. As with the other sizes, the NORM version requires external controls, and AUMA’s AM and AC controls supply the analogue setpoint, fieldbus communication and feedback of position, torque and status.

Key Features

The AUMA SQR 14.2 offers the highest modulating capacity in the compact SQ .2 family.

  • A tripping torque of 1,200 Nm to 2,400 Nm with up to 1,200 Nm modulating torque suits very large control valves.
  • Four operating times from 36 s to 100 s fit slow, surge-conscious control of big pipelines.
  • A reduced rating at 36 s (1,800 Nm trip, 900 Nm modulating) is clearly documented for correct speed selection.
  • Up to 1,500 starts per hour and 50 ms pulses allow continuous control duty.
  • F14/F16 flanges and 60 mm shafts match large valve bodies.
  • A 200 mm handwheel with 51 or 70 turns provides slow manual setting.
  • IP68 and KS protection for coastal intakes and outfalls.
  • AM and AC controls add fieldbus and diagnostic capability.

Selection Guidance for the AUMA SQR 14.2

The AUMA SQR 14.2 is a specialist choice, so confirm early that no smaller frame will do. The minimum tripping torque of 1,200 Nm means a valve below that figure is better served by the SQR 12.2. Equally, if the valve demands more than 1,200 Nm of modulating torque, the rating is exceeded and a gearbox-based solution is needed.

Review the control philosophy with the process engineer. On a valve this size the actuator may take well over a minute to traverse a quarter turn, so the loop dynamics may be limited by the actuator rather than the controller, and the process should tolerate that response time.

Industrial Applications

The AUMA SQR 14.2 is chosen for the largest control butterfly valves in seawater cooling circuits, intake flow regulation at desalination plants, and large district cooling headers. Flow regulation on big transmission mains, where an operator must hold a pressure or flow setpoint with a valve measured in metres, is another typical use. The drive’s self-locking gear train keeps the valve steady between corrections.

In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC delivers the SQR 14.2 to customers in Muscat, Sohar, Salalah and across the GCC.

About brand
Electric actuators for industrial valves are the core of AUMA's business. Founded in 1964 and based in Müllheim, Germany, the company builds multi-turn, part-turn and linear actuators with matching gearboxes and actuator controls, in modular combinations that are fixed at the time of order. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing AUMA actuators, gearboxes, fail-safe units and the SIMA2 master station for valve automation projects and replacements in Oman and the GCC.

AUMA actuator and gearbox types

SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line. Special items include the seawater-resistant SGM and SGMR part-turn actuators with bronze housings, the SVC and SVCR globe valve actuators and the FQM fail-safe unit. Integral controls come as AM or AC versions.

Where AUMA electric actuators are used

AUMA actuators are found in water, power, oil and gas, marine and general industry. In practice that means isolation and control valves in water treatment and pumping stations, power plant steam and cooling systems, tank farms and pipelines, and sluice gates and dampers.
