AUMA SQEx 10.2 Explosion-Proof Part-Turn Actuator

Overview

AUMA SQEx 10.2 is the mid-range explosion-proof part-turn actuator and gives a tripping torque window of 200 Nm to 600 Nm. Its run torque for 15 minutes is 157.5 Nm at the fastest 8 s ratio, where the maximum tripping torque is limited to 450 Nm, and 210 Nm at the slower ratios with the full 600 Nm. This frame introduces the F10 flange and the larger 200 mm handwheel in the Ex range.

Two Torque Tiers in One Frame

The AUMA SQEx 10.2 has two sets of torque limits depending on the operating time. At 8 seconds the maximum tripping torque is 450 Nm and the run torque is 157.5 Nm. At 11, 16, 22, 32, 42 and 63 seconds the maximum tripping torque rises to 600 Nm and the run torque to 210 Nm. A valve with a high running torque therefore needs a slower gear ratio, even if its seating torque would fit within 450 Nm.

The motor is a 3-phase squirrel-cage unit with PTC thermistor protection, rated for short-time duty S2 – 15 min at the run torque, and the maximum number of starts is 60 per hour. Self-locking is documented for standstill conditions, which prevents back-driving of the valve by line pressure. Motor heaters of 12.5 W at 110 to 120 V, 220 to 240 V or 380 to 480 V AC are available as an option for cold or humid sites.

Engineering Design of the AUMA SQEx 10.2

The valve attachment of the AUMA SQEx 10.2 is EN ISO 5211 F10 standard with F12 option, and the coupling accepts shafts up to 38 mm cylindrical, 30 mm square and 27 mm two-flat. The 200 mm handwheel needs 11 or 15 turns for 90 degrees, and it is declared not to rotate during electrical operation, which protects operators from a spinning wheel.

Weight is about 30 kg, or 34 kg with base and lever. Enclosure protection is IP68, with the terminal compartment additionally sealed, and corrosion protection is KS with KX options for extreme salinity. Intermediate position switches, tandem switches and a position transmitter are available as options, and the magnetic limit and torque transmitter works with ACExC controls for non-intrusive setting.

Selection Guidance for the AUMA SQEx 10.2

With the AUMA SQEx 10.2, the speed selection decides which torque tier applies. A valve whose running torque exceeds 157.5 Nm cannot use the 8 s ratio in the documented duty, and one that needs more than 450 Nm for tripping needs a slower ratio too. Make this choice with the valve datasheet in front of you rather than from the actuator catalogue alone.

Plan the electrical side with the same care. The Ex plug/socket connector and the cable glands must carry certification that matches the actuator, and the controls must be installed according to the applicable rules. Keep the name plate data with the project file after delivery, because inspectors will compare it with the area classification documents during commissioning and at later audits.

Industrial Applications

The AUMA SQEx 10.2 is commonly specified on butterfly valves at crude and product tank farms, isolation valves on gas compression and treatment trains, and ball valves at loading and export terminals. These facilities are typical of the energy sector in the Sultanate, where valves must be remotely operable yet certified for the area. The mid-torque frame also suits chemical plants that handle flammable solvents.
