AUMA SAEx 10.2 Explosion-Proof Multi-Turn Actuator

Description

Overview

AUMA SAEx 10.2 steps up to 40–120 Nm (S2-15 min) as the third SAEx frame. It uses the single F10 flange of EN ISO 5210 and a 200 mm handwheel, and is certified for gas group IIC.

Through Seven Star LLC, a trusted supplier of AUMA products, the SAEx 10.2 reaches Omani and GCC projects with the manufacturer’s paperwork. The Muscat office handles enquiries and commissioning questions for Sohar, Duqm and Salalah. For comparison, see the SAEx series overview, the Ex modulating range (SAREx) and the AUMA SA 10.2 multi-turn electric actuator.

Operating Principle of the AUMA SAEx 10.2

Motor rotation in the SAEx 10.2 is reduced through a gear train to the multi-turn output drive. End positions and torque are monitored mechanically, so a seized valve trips the actuator before the stem is overloaded. Below 90 rpm the drive is self-locking; the 125 and 180 rpm versions are not, and external AMExC or ACExC controls are always needed.

Engineering Design of the AUMA SAEx 10.2

Check the stem diameter first: the SAEx 10.2 accepts rising stems up to 40 mm, well above the 26 or 34 mm limits of the smaller frames, which makes it a good fit for valves with thick stems or protective stem tubes. At 26 to 28 kg it needs a lifting aid on higher valve positions. With the 200 mm handwheel, a hand-turn test before first electrical operation confirms valve travel and handwheel direction.

Connection is through the Ex plug/socket connector (KT) with spring-clamp control terminals; IP68 is standard and the optional motor heater is rated 12.5 W.

Key Features of the AUMA SAEx 10.2

What the SAEx 10.2 offers at a glance:

  • Tripping torque of 40 to 120 Nm (S2-15 min) and up to 90 Nm at S2-30 min.
  • Run torque staged from 42 Nm to 35 Nm (S2-15 min) as output speed rises.
  • Output speeds of 4–180 rpm at 50 Hz, with up to 60 starts per hour.
  • Approximate weight of 26 kg (4–22 rpm), 28 kg (32–180 rpm) and 200 mm handwheel.
  • Motor ratings of 0.06–1.00 kW (400 V) with 0.5–3.5 A nominal current.

Selecting the AUMA SAEx 10.2 for Your Valve

Select the SAEx 10.2 for valves that need up to 120 Nm. It is the first frame in the series with a 40 mm rising-stem capacity and a 200 mm handwheel, and its F10 flange is the only EN ISO 5210 option, so stem and flange dimensions must be confirmed against the valve before ordering. The run torque of 42 Nm at S2-15 min for speeds up to 63 rpm falls to 35 Nm from 90 rpm, which matters for fast stroking duties: a valve that needs a higher continuous torque at 90 rpm or more should be checked against the SAEx 14.2.

Compared with the SAEx 07.6, the SAEx 10.2 offers twice the maximum tripping torque, 120 Nm against 60 Nm, on a single F10 flange. The next frame, the SAEx 14.2, reaches 250 Nm on an F14 flange with a 315 mm handwheel and starts at 48 kg.

AUMA SAEx 10.2 Torque and Speed Data

These are the torque limits of the AUMA SAEx 10.2 by output speed, valid at nominal voltage and +40 °C. Illustrative calculation, not AUMA data: a valve needing 30 turns per stroke takes 225 s at 8 rpm, 40 s at 45 rpm and 20 s at 90 rpm.

Output speed, rpm Trip torque, S2-15 / S2-30 min, Nm Run torque, S2-15 / S2-30 min, Nm
4–63 120 / 90 42 / 21
90–125 120 / 90 35 / 18
180 100 / 70 35 / 18

Worked Sizing Example for the SAEx 10.2 (Illustrative Calculation)

Take a pump discharge isolation valve in a refinery pump house, specified at 95 Nm seating torque. The SAEx 10.2 provides 120 Nm, leaving a 25 Nm reserve, and its 42 Nm run torque up to 63 rpm exceeds the usual running torque of such valves. At 90 rpm, however, run torque falls to 35 Nm, so a slower speed such as 22 rpm is the safer choice if the valve is stiff in mid-travel. This is an illustrative calculation, not AUMA data.

Industrial Applications

The AUMA SAEx 10.2 is a common specification for medium-size gate and globe valves in oil, gas and petrochemical plants where electric actuation replaces manual handwheels in Zone 1 or Zone 2 areas. Typical positions include pump suction and discharge isolation, heat-exchanger bypass valves, and utility isolation in hazardous plant areas.

Refineries and fuel terminals along the Omani coast also use this frame for loading-line block valves and tank-farm manifolds, where the IP68 enclosure copes with washdown and humid salt-laden air. Seven Star LLC delivers the SAEx 10.2 with the documentation EPC contractors need for ATEX file compilation.

About brand
Electric actuators for industrial valves are the core of AUMA's business. Founded in 1964 and based in Müllheim, Germany, the company builds multi-turn, part-turn and linear actuators with matching gearboxes and actuator controls, in modular combinations that are fixed at the time of order. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing AUMA actuators, gearboxes, fail-safe units and the SIMA2 master station for valve automation projects and replacements in Oman and the GCC.

AUMA actuator and gearbox types

SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line. Special items include the seawater-resistant SGM and SGMR part-turn actuators with bronze housings, the SVC and SVCR globe valve actuators and the FQM fail-safe unit. Integral controls come as AM or AC versions.

Where AUMA electric actuators are used

AUMA actuators are found in water, power, oil and gas, marine and general industry. In practice that means isolation and control valves in water treatment and pumping stations, power plant steam and cooling systems, tank farms and pipelines, and sluice gates and dampers.

Ordering AUMA actuators and parts: what we need

For a replacement send photos of the actuator, motor and controls nameplates: type, order number, serial number and wiring diagram number. For a new actuator we need:
  • valve type, required torque or thrust, and turns or stroke
  • valve mounting flange and stem or shaft details
  • output speed, duty (open-close or modulating)
  • supply voltage and frequency, control signals or fieldbus
  • enclosure protection, ambient temperature, Ex requirement
