AUMA SAREx 16.2 Explosion-Proof Modulating Actuator

Description

Overview

AUMA SAREx 16.2 is the sixth SAREx frame and the largest in gas group IIC: 500 to 1,000 Nm tripping torque (S4-25 %), up to 400 / 200 Nm modulating torque and an F16 flange.

Seven Star LLC, a trusted supplier of AUMA products, quotes the SAREx 16.2 for large control valves in hazardous areas across Oman and the GCC. Our Muscat team supplies documentation for ATEX files and loop-tuning advice. Related pages: SAREx series overview, SAEx explosion-proof actuators and AUMA SQEx explosion-proof part-turn actuator.

Operating Principle of the AUMA SAREx 16.2

With 500 to 1,000 Nm tripping torque, the SAREx 16.2 moves in pulses of at least 100 ms from an AMExC or ACExC positioner. Modulating torque is graded by speed band, from 400 / 200 Nm at 4 to 5.6 rpm down to 200 / 100 Nm at 63 to 90 rpm, and starts fall from 600 to 150 per hour.

Engineering Design of the SAREx 16.2

The SAREx 16.2 steps its modulating torque down from 400 Nm to 200 Nm as speed rises, and its starts per hour from 600 to 150. With a 100 ms minimum pulse and 72 to 88 kg weight, it is typically paired with slower speeds for precise positioning of large control valves. Plan lifting equipment and handwheel clearance (500 mm) before installation.

Cabling uses the AUMA Ex plug/socket connector (KT) with spring-clamp control terminals; the housing is IP68 and the optional heater is 12.5 W.

Key Features of the AUMA SAREx 16.2

What the AUMA SAREx 16.2 offers at a glance:

  • Trip torque from 500 to 1,000 Nm for S4-25 % duty, up to 710 Nm for S4-50 %.
  • Modulating torque up to 400 / 200 Nm (S4-25 % / S4-50 %).
  • Speed range 4–90 rpm (50 Hz); permitted starts depend on the band.
  • Approximate weight of 72 kg (4–22 rpm), 83 kg (32–45 rpm), 88 kg (63–90 rpm) and 500 mm handwheel.
  • Motor power of 0.40–5.00 kW at 400 V; pulse timing 100 ms (same direction); on reversal 300 ms at 4 rpm down to 110 ms at 90 rpm.

Selecting the AUMA SAREx 16.2 for Your Valve

The SAREx 16.2 is the largest modulating Ex actuator on the 07.2 to 16.2 platform, with 500 to 1,000 Nm of tripping torque, an F16 flange and a 77 mm stem capacity. Modulating torque is graded in five steps from 400 Nm (4 to 5.6 rpm) to 200 Nm (63 to 90 rpm), and the permitted starts range from 600 to 150 per hour. The minimum pulse duration of 100 ms is double that of the smallest frames.

The SAREx 16.2 is the last group IIC frame in the SAREx range, with F16, a 77 mm stem and a 500 mm handwheel at 72 to 88 kg. The next size, the SAREx 25.1, brings group IIB, IP67 and only 8 to 11 rpm as standard.

AUMA SAREx 16.2 Modulating Torque and Starts by Speed

These are the modulating limits of the AUMA SAREx 16.2 by output speed, valid at nominal voltage and +40 °C. Tripping torque is adjustable up to 1,000 Nm (S4-25 %) or 710 Nm (S4-50 %). Illustrative calculation, not AUMA data: a control valve with 16 turns per stroke needs 171 s at 5.6 rpm, 21 s at 45 rpm and 11 s at 90 rpm for a full stroke.

Output speed, rpm Modulating torque, S4-25 / S4-50 %, Nm Maximum starts per hour
4–5.6 400 / 200 600
8–11 350 / 175 600
16–22 300 / 150 300
32–45 250 / 125 200
63–90 200 / 100 150

Loop-tuning note: the SAREx 16.2 needs a 100 ms minimum pulse, and its reversal pulse ranges from 300 ms at 4 rpm to 110 ms at 90 rpm. Combined with 600 to 150 starts per hour, this suits slower control loops. Matching the controller’s update interval to the pulse data avoids hunting, and 16 to 22 rpm (150 to 140 ms on reversal, 300 starts per hour) is a typical middle ground.

Worked Sizing Example for the SAREx 16.2 (Illustrative Calculation)

A large pressure-control valve in a transmission station needs 320 Nm of modulating torque. The SAREx 16.2 supplies 400 Nm at 4 to 5.6 rpm, 350 Nm at 8 to 11 rpm and 300 Nm at 16 to 22 rpm. Only the first two bands therefore cover the valve, which limits the starts to 600 per hour and the output speed to 11 rpm or below. A fast loop would need a different actuator selection. This is an illustrative calculation, not AUMA data.

About brand
Electric actuators for industrial valves are the core of AUMA's business. Founded in 1964 and based in Müllheim, Germany, the company builds multi-turn, part-turn and linear actuators with matching gearboxes and actuator controls, in modular combinations that are fixed at the time of order. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing AUMA actuators, gearboxes, fail-safe units and the SIMA2 master station for valve automation projects and replacements in Oman and the GCC.

AUMA actuator and gearbox types

SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line. Special items include the seawater-resistant SGM and SGMR part-turn actuators with bronze housings, the SVC and SVCR globe valve actuators and the FQM fail-safe unit. Integral controls come as AM or AC versions.

Where AUMA electric actuators are used

AUMA actuators are found in water, power, oil and gas, marine and general industry. In practice that means isolation and control valves in water treatment and pumping stations, power plant steam and cooling systems, tank farms and pipelines, and sluice gates and dampers.
