Brand:

AUMA SA 40.1 Multi-Turn Actuator

Description

Overview

AUMA SA 40.1 is an AUMA NORM multi-turn actuator for open-close duty with a tripping-torque window of 5,000 to 16,000 Nm and 8 output speeds from 4 to 45 rpm. SA 40.1 sits near the top of the AUMA SA range with 5,000 to 16,000 Nm, an F40 flange and a rising stem capacity of 175 mm. It weighs about 510 kg and is limited to 20 starts per hour.

Customers in Oman and the GCC buy the AUMA SA 40.1 from Seven Star LLC, a trusted supplier of AUMA products, and our team checks stem size and weight handling before the order is placed.

Operating Principle

At the top of this multi-turn range, the SA 40.1 still counts motor turns for its OPEN and CLOSED end positions and trips on torque from 5,000 to 16,000 Nm. Self-locking applies up to 22 rpm, the speed list ends at 45 rpm, and S2 – 15 min duty allows 20 starts per hour.

Engineering Design of the AUMA SA 40.1

The unit is supplied with a 500 mm handwheel and, like other SA 25.1 and larger sizes, with IP67 standard protection and IP68 as an option. Brake-motor and hydraulic-steel-structure variants for SA 25.1 to SA 40.1 are documented separately by AUMA and should be requested when a gate has to be held in position against differential pressure.

Key Features

What stands out on the AUMA SA 40.1:

  • Extra-heavy multi-turn actuator for the largest gates and valves.
  • Adjustment range: 5,000 to 16,000 Nm per direction, a ratio of 3.2 to 1 between lowest and highest setting.
  • Under S2 – 30 min duty the limit is 11,200 Nm, which is 70 percent of the top tripping value.
  • Power density works out at roughly 31.4 Nm of maximum torque per kilogram.
  • An illustrative stroke of 120 turns takes about 450 seconds at 16 rpm.
  • The SA 35.1 is the next size down from here.
  • Dimension drawings and electrical data are covered by separate AUMA sheets.

Selecting the AUMA SA 40.1

This size has the narrowest speed list of the whole SA family: eight ratios from 4 to 45 rpm. Torque at S2-15 min is 16,000 Nm up to 22 rpm, 14,000 Nm at 32 rpm and 10,000 Nm at 45 rpm, with S2-30 min values of 11,200, 9,800 and 7,000 Nm. Anyone converting a valve stroke into an actuation time should use the examples in this page; at 22 rpm a valve needing 120 turns takes about five and a half minutes. Like the SA 35.1 this size is self-locking only up to 22 rpm at 50 Hz.

Typical partners are very large sluice and radial gates, big wedge-gate valves in penstock lines, hydraulic steel structures, and multi-turn input for heavy gearboxes that drive very large butterfly or ball valves.

With only eight speeds, from 4 to 45 rpm, the AUMA SA 40.1 is selected almost entirely on torque and stroke time. A radial or sector gate needing 120 turns will take more than five minutes at 22 rpm, and the operator should confirm that the hydraulic or civil design tolerates that closing time. For installations where the gate must be closed in an emergency, the control philosophy should include a stand-by supply, because manual operation at this torque level is slow and the handwheel is intended for setting and emergency strokes. Ask for the outline drawing and the weight certificate of the ordered configuration, and share them with the structural engineer and the lifting contractor well ahead of delivery, because every option adds mass and changes the centre of gravity.

Sizing example for the AUMA SA 40.1

For an illustrative radial gate that needs 11,000 Nm to break away and 6,500 Nm to run, a 25 percent margin gives about 13,750 Nm. That is within the 5,000 to 16,000 Nm window of the AUMA SA 40.1, and the 16,000 Nm rating applies up to 22 rpm, with 14,000 Nm at 32 rpm and 10,000 Nm at 45 rpm. At 45 rpm the actuator would therefore be undersized for this duty. A 120-turn stroke at 11 rpm takes about 655 seconds and at 22 rpm about 327 seconds. These numbers are an illustrative calculation and not AUMA data.

Installation and Mounting of the AUMA SA 40.1

At approximately 510 kg the AUMA SA 40.1 is lifted only with certified lifting gear, and the yoke, base frame and civil structure must be verified for the weight, the 16,000 Nm reaction torque and the stem load. The F40 flange takes a stem up to 175 mm and the 500 mm handwheel provides only a limited manual capability at this torque level, so emergency operating procedures should rely on a power tool or a stand-by supply.

Industrial Applications

Applications in the Gulf include the largest seawater intake and outfall gates, bulk-water transfer penstocks and storm-water structures. Because few Omani projects need this torque class, early engineering review with the valve manufacturer is advisable so that the valve stem, yoke and civil structure are verified for the actuator’s reaction forces before purchase.

For heavy valve projects, a trusted supplier of AUMA products Seven Star LLC offers the AUMA SA 10.2 multi-turn electric actuator, the AUMA MATIC AM/AC integral actuator controls and the AUMA SAEx explosion-proof actuator in Oman and the GCC.

About brand
Electric actuators for industrial valves are the core of AUMA's business. Founded in 1964 and based in Müllheim, Germany, the company builds multi-turn, part-turn and linear actuators with matching gearboxes and actuator controls, in modular combinations that are fixed at the time of order. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing AUMA actuators, gearboxes, fail-safe units and the SIMA2 master station for valve automation projects and replacements in Oman and the GCC.

AUMA actuator and gearbox types

SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line. Special items include the seawater-resistant SGM and SGMR part-turn actuators with bronze housings, the SVC and SVCR globe valve actuators and the FQM fail-safe unit. Integral controls come as AM or AC versions.

Where AUMA electric actuators are used

AUMA actuators are found in water, power, oil and gas, marine and general industry. In practice that means isolation and control valves in water treatment and pumping stations, power plant steam and cooling systems, tank farms and pipelines, and sluice gates and dampers.
