AUMA SAREx 30.1 Explosion-Proof Modulating Actuator
Description
Overview
AUMA SAREx 30.1 is the largest SAREx frame on the data sheet: 2,000 to 4,000 Nm tripping torque (S4-25 %), up to 1,600 / 800 Nm modulating torque (S4-25 % / S4-50 %) on an F30 flange.
Seven Star LLC supplies the SAREx 30.1 as trusted AUMA supplier for Oman and the GCC, with quotation, delivery planning and documentation. Large control valves on pipelines and terminals near Sohar and Duqm are typical applications. Operating Principle of the AUMA SAREx 30.1
The SAREx 30.1 positions large valves by short motor pulses of at least 100 ms from an AMExC or ACExC positioner. Modulating torque is 1,600 / 800 Nm at 4 to 5.6 rpm and 1,400 / 700 Nm at 8 to 11 rpm, with 300 starts per hour at every speed. Self-locking is documented for the SAREx series.
Engineering Design of the SAREx 30.1
The SAREx 30.1 weighs 195 kg and moves at 4 to 11 rpm, so controllers must be tuned for a very slow final element. Modulating torque of 1,600 Nm applies at 4 and 5.6 rpm and 1,400 Nm at 8 and 11 rpm. Plan lifting equipment, and verify the F30 flange and the 115 mm stem bore with the valve manufacturer.
The control wiring connects directly to terminals, and the motor terminals are in a separate compartment. The housing is IP67 as standard and IP68 as an option; the heater is rated 12.5 to 25 W.
Key Features of the AUMA SAREx 30.1
What the AUMA SAREx 30.1 offers at a glance:
- Tripping torque of 2,000 to 4,000 Nm (S4-25 %) and 2,800 Nm at S4-50 %.
- Modulating torque up to 1,600 / 800 Nm (S4-25 % / S4-50 %).
- Output speeds of 4–11 rpm at 50 Hz, with starts graded by speed band.
- Handwheel diameter 160 mm (as printed in the data sheet), approximate weight 195 kg.
- 2.2–5.5 kW motors at 400 V; pulse timing 100 ms (same direction); on reversal 275 ms at 4 rpm down to 130 ms at 11 rpm.
Selecting the AUMA SAREx 30.1 for Your Valve
The SAREx 30.1 is the largest modulating Ex actuator in AUMA’s explosion-protected multi-turn range, with 2,000 to 4,000 Nm of tripping torque on an F30 flange and 115 mm stem capacity. Modulating torque is 1,600 Nm at 4 and 5.6 rpm and 1,400 Nm at 8 and 11 rpm, with 300 starts per hour. Only four speeds (4 to 11 rpm) are offered, reflecting its use on large, slow control valves.
The SAREx 30.1 is the largest modulating Ex frame on the data sheet: 2,000 to 4,000 Nm, an F30 flange and a 115 mm stem. It doubles the SAREx 25.1 and keeps the same 300 starts per hour and 100 ms minimum pulse.
AUMA SAREx 30.1 Modulating Torque and Starts by Speed
AUMA publishes these limits for the AUMA SAREx 30.1 at nominal voltage and +40 °C ambient temperature. Tripping torque is adjustable up to 4,000 Nm (S4-25 %) or 2,800 Nm (S4-50 %). Illustrative calculation, not AUMA data: a control valve with 24 turns per stroke needs 360 s at 4 rpm, 180 s at 8 rpm and 131 s at 11 rpm for a full stroke.
| Output speed, rpm | Modulating torque, S4-25 / S4-50 %, Nm | Maximum starts per hour |
|---|---|---|
| 4–5.6 | 1,600 / 800 | 300 |
| 8–11 | 1,400 / 700 | 300 |
Loop-tuning note: the SAREx 30.1 specifies a 100 ms minimum pulse, reversal pulses of 275, 220, 155 and 130 ms at 4, 5.6, 8 and 11 rpm, and 300 starts per hour. The torque trade-off is explicit: 4 and 5.6 rpm give 1,600 Nm of modulating torque, while 8 and 11 rpm give faster stroking with 1,400 Nm, which is enough for many large control valves.
Worked Sizing Example for the SAREx 30.1 (Illustrative Calculation)
A large throttling valve in a pumping station needs 1,500 Nm to modulate. The SAREx 30.1 provides 1,600 Nm at 4 to 5.6 rpm and 1,400 Nm at 8 to 11 rpm, so only the two slowest speeds satisfy this valve. At those speeds a full stroke takes minutes rather than seconds, which is acceptable for slow processes but not for fast pressure control. This is an illustrative calculation, not AUMA data.
Motor and Electrical Data of the AUMA SAREx 30.1
2 speed points from AUMA’s separate electrical data sheet (S4-25 %, 400 V / 50 Hz), 2.2 to 5.5 kW; approximate values that are not part of the technical datasheet attached here.
| Speed, rpm | Motor | Power, kW | Nominal current, A | Max. current, A | Starting current, A | Power factor |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | ADXR112-8/140 | 2.2 | 11 | 15 | 36 | 0.58 |
| 11 | ADXR112-4/110 | 5.5 | 13 | 23 | 60 | 0.77 |
Explosion Protection and Installation Notes for the AUMA SAREx 30.1
Standard ATEX markings of the SAREx 30.1 per AUMA: II 2G Ex db eb IIB T4 or T3 Gb, II 2G Ex h IIB T4 or T3 Gb and II 2D Ex tb IIIC T130 °C or T190 °C Db. Certificate: TÜV 14 ATEX 7542 X. Confirm temperature class and zone on the nameplate.
At 195 kg the unit needs lifting equipment, and the data sheet gives a 160 mm handwheel, which is printed as such for this frame and should be confirmed in the order documentation.
Industrial Applications
The AUMA SAREx 30.1 targets the largest modulating duties in classified areas, such as large control valves in pipeline pumping stations, big flow-regulating valves in terminals and large throttling valves in major process units. Its 1,600 Nm modulating torque is unmatched by any other SAREx size.
Only a few projects need this frame, so early technical coordination is recommended. Seven Star LLC, a trusted supplier of AUMA products in Oman and the GCC, provides quotation, delivery planning and technical support for the SAREx 30.1.
Because only four speeds are offered, the SAREx 30.1 is best specified together with the stroke time that the process really needs. At 24 turns per stroke (an illustrative figure), the 4 rpm option needs six minutes while the 11 rpm option needs about two minutes, and both stay within 300 starts per hour. Valves requiring faster modulation than this should be reviewed with AUMA before an order is placed.

Where AUMA actuators are used
Water transmission and treatment is the largest use: pipeline isolation valves, pumping stations, desalination plants and sluice gates. AUMA actuators also run valves in power plant steam, feedwater and cooling systems, pipelines and tank farms, refineries and chemical plants, and on ships and offshore platforms. In the Gulf, check the ambient temperature rating, since actuators in direct sun can exceed 50 °C, and specify the enclosure protection for sand and humidity.
Ordering AUMA actuators and spare parts: what we need
For a replacement, send photos of the actuator, motor and controls nameplates: type designation, commission or order number, serial number and wiring diagram number. AUMA identifies the original build from the commission number. For a new actuator, add the valve type, required torque or thrust at the worst case, number of turns or swing angle, operating time, mounting flange to ISO 5210 or ISO 5211, stem or shaft dimensions, duty (open-close or modulating), supply voltage and frequency, control signals or fieldbus, and the hazardous-area marking required on site.
