AUMA SA 30.1 Multi-Turn Actuator

Description

Overview

AUMA SA 30.1 is an AUMA NORM multi-turn actuator for open-close duty with a tripping-torque window of 1,250 to 4,000 Nm and 12 output speeds from 4 to 180 rpm. SA 30.1 delivers 1,250 to 4,000 Nm through an F30 flange, accepts a rising stem up to 115 mm, and is fitted with a 500 mm handwheel. Weight is quoted between 190 and 260 kg depending on the speed range.

Seven Star LLC supplies AUMA products across Oman and the GCC and supplies the AUMA SA 30.1 with documentation and local support from Muscat.

Operating Principle

On the SA 30.1, motor turns are counted to fix the OPEN and CLOSED end positions, and torque switching releases at the set value up to 4,000 Nm in each direction. Duty is S2 – 15 min as standard, and the limit drops to 3,200 Nm at 125 rpm and 2,800 Nm at 180 rpm.

Engineering Design of the AUMA SA 30.1

The S2-15 min torque is 4,000 Nm up to 90 rpm, 3,200 Nm at 125 rpm and 2,800 Nm at 180 rpm; S2-30 min values are 2,800, 2,200 and 2,000 Nm. As with all SA 25.1 and larger sizes the standard enclosure is IP67 with IP68 as an option, and the motor terminals sit in a separate connection compartment rather than in the plug-in connector.

Key Features

Specifying the AUMA SA 30.1 comes down to these points:

  • Very heavy-duty multi-turn actuator for large sluice gates and valves.
  • The setting range runs from 1,250 to 4,000 Nm, so the largest setting is 3.2 times the smallest.
  • Rated S2 – 30 min torque of 2,800 Nm corresponds to 70 percent of the 4,000 Nm tripping maximum.
  • Weight-specific torque comes to roughly 15.4 to 21.1 Nm/kg.
  • An illustrative stroke of 80 turns takes about 150 seconds at 32 rpm.
  • Its closest relatives in the range are the SA 25.1 and the SA 35.1.
  • Request the separate AUMA dimension and electrical data sheets when planning the installation.

Selecting the AUMA SA 30.1

Compared with the SA 25.1, the AUMA SA 30.1 doubles the maximum torque, adds 20 mm of stem capacity (95 mm to 115 mm) and enlarges the handwheel from 400 mm to 500 mm, while the starts-per-hour limit remains at 40. The weight steps from 150 to 160 kg up to 190 kg for the lower speeds and 260 kg for the higher speeds, so the mounting structure and the valve bonnet or yoke must be checked for the extra load. The minimum tripping torque of 1,250 Nm means smaller valves should not be coupled to this size.

Typical partners are large wedge-gate valves, heavy globe valves in power-plant steam and feed-water systems, large penstocks and sluice gates at dams and intakes, and combinations with AUMA multi-turn gearboxes for very large butterfly and ball valves.

Large gates and valves rarely need to be operated quickly, and the slow end of the speed list is often the sensible choice for the AUMA SA 30.1. At 4 to 11 rpm the stroke of an 80-turn valve takes between 7 and 20 minutes, which protects the pipeline from water hammer and keeps motor heating low, while the full 4,000 Nm remains available. The only reason to move to the fast ratios is a short emergency closing time, and then the reduced torque at 125 and 180 rpm and the loss of self-locking above 90 rpm must be checked against the duty. Request the outline drawing for the chosen output drive early in the project, since the footprint of this size affects platform design, cable routing and the clearance needed for lifting equipment above the valve.

Sizing example for the AUMA SA 30.1

Take an illustrative gate that needs 2,400 Nm to break away and 1,300 Nm to run. A 25 percent allowance gives about 3,000 Nm, which falls inside the 1,250 to 4,000 Nm window of the AUMA SA 30.1. At 125 rpm 3,200 Nm is still available, but at 180 rpm only 2,800 Nm, so the 180 rpm ratio would fall short of this 3,000 Nm target. An 80-turn stroke at 11 rpm takes about 436 seconds and at 32 rpm about 150 seconds. These numbers are an illustrative calculation and not AUMA data.

Installation and Mounting of the AUMA SA 30.1

Weight is the decisive installation point: 190 kg for the lower speed group and 260 kg for the higher, which requires a crane and a structural check of the gate frame or valve yoke. The F30 flange takes a stem up to 115 mm and the 500 mm handwheel needs a wide clearance. Motor connection is made through terminals in a separate compartment, so allow enough cable space for the heavy-gauge cable of this motor size.

Industrial Applications

Examples in the region include main cooling-water inlet gates at thermal power stations, bulk-water reservoir isolation valves, port and terminal cargo-line valves, and large wastewater plant inlet gates. In the Sultanate’s interior, where large flood-protection and irrigation regulating gates are operated, the self-locking property up to 90 rpm lets the gate hold position without a brake.

In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC also supplies the AUMA SA 10.2 multi-turn electric actuator, the AUMA MATIC AM/AC integral actuator controls and the AUMA SAEx explosion-proof actuator.

About brand
Electric actuators for industrial valves are the core of AUMA's business. Founded in 1964 and based in Müllheim, Germany, the company builds multi-turn, part-turn and linear actuators with matching gearboxes and actuator controls, in modular combinations that are fixed at the time of order. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing AUMA actuators, gearboxes, fail-safe units and the SIMA2 master station for valve automation projects and replacements in Oman and the GCC.

AUMA actuator and gearbox types

SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line. Special items include the seawater-resistant SGM and SGMR part-turn actuators with bronze housings, the SVC and SVCR globe valve actuators and the FQM fail-safe unit. Integral controls come as AM or AC versions.

Where AUMA electric actuators are used

AUMA actuators are found in water, power, oil and gas, marine and general industry. In practice that means isolation and control valves in water treatment and pumping stations, power plant steam and cooling systems, tank farms and pipelines, and sluice gates and dampers.
