JUMO flowTRANS MAG S10 Electromagnetic Flowmeter, Type 406060

Description

A flanged magmeter for water and process lines from DN 3 to DN 2000

The JUMO flowTRANS MAG S10 (type 406060) is an electromagnetic flowmeter developed for standard applications in the processing industry and mechanical engineering. Its measuring principle follows Faraday law of induction: a conductive liquid moving through a magnetic field induces a voltage that two electrodes pick up in proportion to the average velocity. Because the tube has no moving or obstructing parts, the meter suits raw water, treated water, slurries, chemicals and cooling loops with a conductivity of more than 20 µS/cm. It is offered in an integral-mount design with the transmitter on the sensor and in a remote-mount design with a signal cable of up to 50 m. A very wide range of nominal diameters, liner materials and flange standards lets one product family serve a whole plant.

Selecting liner, electrodes and flange

The datasheet decides the build with the medium temperature, the pressure and the liner. Hard rubber and soft rubber linings suit water and abrasive slurries, PTFE and PFA suit chemical duty and higher temperature, and ETFE covers DN 25 to 600. Electrode materials run from stainless steel to Hastelloy, titanium, tantalum or platinum-iridium for aggressive media, so state the medium before ordering. A table in the datasheet gives the minimum permissible operating pressure for each liner, for example 270 mbar absolute for PTFE below 20 °C, and a maximum cleaning temperature of 150 °C for steam on PTFE or PFA for no more than 60 minutes. Ordering information in the datasheet lists the type codes for both sensor variants and the external transmitter.

Accessories listed are a cable gland installation set for NPT 1/2 in. (00645908), an M20x1.5 adapter (00706384), an LCD adapter (00706388) and a signal cable (00645914).

Installation and application notes

Install the sensor with the flow direction following the marking, upstream straight run above 10 x DN and downstream straight run above 5 x DN. Use gaskets that suit the medium and do not protrude into the flow area, and never use graphite gaskets, because a conductive coating can form inside the meter tube. Sensors above DN 400 must be mounted on a foundation with support. Keep the remote transmitter out of direct sunlight and vibration. A 5 m signal cable is supplied for remote mount, and a pairing number on the rating plates must match the sensor to its transmitter. Typical uses are desalinated and cooling water, process water, wastewater and dosing, with the heat of a Gulf site in mind when choosing liner and ambient limits.

Using the flowTRANS MAG S10 in Oman and the GCC

Electromagnetic flowmeters are widely used in the region for potable water networks, desalination plant intake and product water, sewage and treated effluent, and process water in industry. The liner and electrodes are the key choices. Hard rubber liners are common in water and wastewater, while PTFE or PFA liners suit chemicals and higher temperatures, and electrode material should match the liquid, especially for seawater, brine and chemicals where corrosion is a risk.

Install the meter where the pipe stays full, with enough straight pipe upstream and downstream as given in the manual, and use earthing rings or earthing electrodes where the pipe is plastic or lined. For buried or flooded chambers, check the protection rating of the sensor and consider a remote transmitter in a dry location.

Choosing a temperature sensor starts with the range and accuracy. A Pt100 RTD is accurate and stable from about -200 to 600 °C and is the usual choice in process plants. A thermocouple (type K or J, for example) covers much higher temperatures and responds faster but is less accurate. The wiring also matters: a 3-wire or 4-wire Pt100 connection cancels the resistance of the cable, while a 2-wire connection adds an error that grows with cable length. That is why a head-mounted transmitter is often fitted close to the sensor.

Where JUMO products are used

In Oman and the GCC, JUMO sensors and controllers are used in oil and gas and chemical plants, food and beverage production, plastics and metal heat treatment, HVAC and district cooling, water and wastewater treatment, swimming pools and marine applications.
