Promag 53W / 55S Electromagnetic Flowmeter

Description

Overview

The Promag 53W / 55S is Endress+Hauser’s electromagnetic flowmeter platform combining the Promag W sensor—the specialized sensor for all applications in the water industry—with the Promag S sensor, purpose-built for inhomogeneous, abrasive, and corrosive fluids such as sewage sludge, pulp, and mining slurries. Combined with the Promag 53 or 55 transmitter featuring touch control, a 4-line display, and extended functionality including filling and dosing software, electrode cleaning, and advanced diagnostics, this platform offers the highest accuracy across the most complex and demanding measuring tasks.

As an authorized supplier of Endress+Hauser instrumentation, Seven Star LLC proudly offers the Promag 53W / 55S to water and wastewater treatment plants, pulp and paper facilities, and mining and minerals operations across the Sultanate of Oman, Muscat, and the wider GCC. Its robust, completely welded sensor design and international drinking water approvals make it suitable for both potable water networks and the most abrasive industrial slurry applications.

Measurement Principle

The Promag 53W / 55S operates on Faraday’s law of induction: a voltage is induced in a conductor moving through a magnetic field. In electromagnetic measurement, the flowing medium acts as the moving conductor, with the induced voltage proportional to flow velocity detected by two measuring electrodes and transmitted to the amplifier. Flow volume is computed based on the pipe’s diameter, with the constant magnetic field generated by a switched direct current of alternating polarity.

The Promag S variant delivers a bidirectional measuring principle that is virtually independent of pressure, density, temperature, and viscosity, making it ideal for the most demanding applications with high solids content and abrasion. When combined with a density meter, Promag 55S can also determine the throughput of solids in mass, volume, or percentage rates—a valuable capability for sewage treatment and pulp and paper production. The Promag 53W achieves a maximum measurement error of ±0.2%, with volume flow accuracy of ±0.5% o.r. ±1mm/s standard (option: ±0.2% o.r. ±2mm/s).

Engineering Design of the Promag 53W / 55S

The Promag 53W covers nominal diameters from DN 25 to 2000 (1″ to 78″), with a measuring range up to 110,000 m³/h and maximum process pressures from PN6 to PN40 depending on connection standard (also available in Cl 150-300, JIS 10-20K, AWWA Class D, AS 2129 Table E, and AS 4087 PN16). Medium temperature range spans -20°C to +80°C, with the robust, completely welded sensor design ensuring secure, reliable long-term operation and international drinking water approvals.

The Promag 55S sensor, built with industry-optimized liners, enables use in the most challenging surroundings including sewage treatment, pulp and paper, and primary metals industries, with flow measurement up to 9,600 m³/h, operation up to +180°C, and 40 bar (580 psi) maximum pressure. Both variants feature an illuminated, four-line liquid-crystal display with 16 characters per line, onsite operation via touch control, and IP67 (Type 4X) standard protection, with optional IP68 (Type 6P) for remote-mounted sensors.

Key Features

The Promag 53W / 55S combines rugged electromagnetic sensing with application-specific liner and electrode options. Core capabilities include:

  • Robust, completely welded sensor for secure, reliable long-term operation.
  • Bidirectional measurement virtually independent of pressure, density, temperature, and viscosity.
  • Solids content flow measurement (55S) when combined with a density meter.
  • Nominal diameters DN 25 to 2000 with measuring ranges up to 110,000 m³/h (53W).
  • International drinking water approvals and IP68 (Type 6P) optional protection.
  • Industry-optimized liners (polyurethane, hard rubber, PFA, PTFE, natural rubber) and electrode materials for abrasive and corrosive media.
  • 4-line illuminated LCD with touch control, filling/dosing software, and electrode cleaning.
  • HART, PROFIBUS PA/DP, and FOUNDATION Fieldbus digital communication.

Industrial Applications

The Promag 53W / 55S is well suited to municipal water and wastewater treatment, pulp and paper production, and mining and minerals processing across Oman requiring reliable electromagnetic flow measurement across a wide range of fluid conditions. Its ability to handle chemical/mechanical pulps, fruit mashes, high-sand slurries, and thick wastewater sludges makes it valuable wherever standard flowmeters would struggle with abrasion or fouling.

As an authorized supplier of Endress+Hauser instrumentation, Seven Star LLC supports water utilities, mining operations, and process industries throughout the Sohar and Salalah economic zones and the broader GCC region with the Promag 53W / 55S’s proven electromagnetic flow measurement capability.
