Measurement Principle

The Promag 53W / 55S operates on Faraday’s law of induction: a voltage is induced in a conductor moving through a magnetic field. In electromagnetic measurement, the flowing medium acts as the moving conductor, with the induced voltage proportional to flow velocity detected by two measuring electrodes and transmitted to the amplifier. Flow volume is computed based on the pipe’s diameter, with the constant magnetic field generated by a switched direct current of alternating polarity.

The Promag S variant delivers a bidirectional measuring principle that is virtually independent of pressure, density, temperature, and viscosity, making it ideal for the most demanding applications with high solids content and abrasion. When combined with a density meter, Promag 55S can also determine the throughput of solids in mass, volume, or percentage rates—a valuable capability for sewage treatment and pulp and paper production. The Promag 53W achieves a maximum measurement error of ±0.2%, with volume flow accuracy of ±0.5% o.r. ±1mm/s standard (option: ±0.2% o.r. ±2mm/s).

Engineering Design of the Promag 53W / 55S

The Promag 53W covers nominal diameters from DN 25 to 2000 (1″ to 78″), with a measuring range up to 110,000 m³/h and maximum process pressures from PN6 to PN40 depending on connection standard (also available in Cl 150-300, JIS 10-20K, AWWA Class D, AS 2129 Table E, and AS 4087 PN16). Medium temperature range spans -20°C to +80°C, with the robust, completely welded sensor design ensuring secure, reliable long-term operation and international drinking water approvals.

The Promag 55S sensor, built with industry-optimized liners, enables use in the most challenging surroundings including sewage treatment, pulp and paper, and primary metals industries, with flow measurement up to 9,600 m³/h, operation up to +180°C, and 40 bar (580 psi) maximum pressure. Both variants feature an illuminated, four-line liquid-crystal display with 16 characters per line, onsite operation via touch control, and IP67 (Type 4X) standard protection, with optional IP68 (Type 6P) for remote-mounted sensors.
