The JUMO MIDAS S22 Ex (type 404720) is a miniature pressure transmitter for gases, vapours and liquids that is certified for hazardous areas. It works on the piezoresistive principle and delivers a load-independent 4 to 20 mA signal that is linearly proportional to pressure. According to the datasheet it meets the requirements of device group II in zones 1 and 2 and device group III in zones 21 and 22, with ATEX certificate SEV 21 ATEX 0537 X and IECEx certificate SEV 21.0011X. The welded stainless steel system, ranges from 2.5 to 100 bar in relative or absolute reference and burst pressures up to 400 bar, ten times the span, suit compact installations where space is short.

Hazardous-area use and wiring

The datasheet marks the device for intrinsically safe use and requires the user to observe the special conditions for safe use listed in the certificates, which are available for download on the manufacturer website. Supply must come from an intrinsically safe source, and JUMO lists an Ex-i repeater power supply and input isolating amplifier (part no. 00577948) that supplies two-wire transmitters in the hazardous area and passes the 0/4 to 20 mA value to the safe area. Terminal assignment is UB plus or white and 0 V or blue for the attached cable; the round plug uses pin 1 for supply plus and pin 3 for supply minus.

The datasheet cautions that the housing must be grounded through the process connection to protect against electromagnetic fields and charges, and that all connected devices such as pumps and valves should be grounded to the same potential. Cable boxes with a 2 m PVC cable and gold-plated 4-pin M12 contacts are listed as 00404585 (straight) and 00409334 (angled).

Choosing connection and range

Pick range, 4 to 20 mA output (405), process connection and stainless steel material (20), then attached cable or M12 plug. Small thread options such as M8, M10 and M12 x 1.5 to DIN 3852-1 suit compact manifolds, G 1/4 to DIN EN 837 suits standard gauge ports and a front-flush G 1/4 version with double seal is listed for flush mounting, though front-flush versions have a narrower 10 to 40 degC range. The extra codes allow a choke for the pressure channel, an enlarged channel or oil and grease free preparation.

Choosing a temperature sensor starts with the range and accuracy. A Pt100 RTD is accurate and stable from about -200 to 600 °C and is the usual choice in process plants. A thermocouple (type K or J, for example) covers much higher temperatures and responds faster but is less accurate. The wiring also matters: a 3-wire or 4-wire Pt100 connection cancels the resistance of the cable, while a 2-wire connection adds an error that grows with cable length. That is why a head-mounted transmitter is often fitted close to the sensor.
