ABB Uvisor SF810 Safe Flame Scanner

Description

Overview

The ABB Uvisor SF810 is a Safe Flame Scanner, not a stack gas analyzer, that detects burner flame presence and quality by sensing UV, visible, and infrared radiation from the flame. It feeds this signal into a burner management system (BMS) for combustion safety interlocks on industrial and utility boilers, distinct from the related SF810i model, which adds an integrated Combustion Index function.

Seven Star LLC supplies the ABB Uvisor SF810 and the wider Uvisor flame scanner range to power generation and industrial combustion facilities across Oman and the GCC, with application guidance for burner management system integration.

Detection Principle

The SF810 pairs a burner-mounted detector head with a separate remote flame amplifier unit (FAU810), using dual-wavelength UV/IR detection to distinguish real flame from background radiation across gas, oil, coal, lignite, and biomass fuels. This multi-wavelength approach lets the scanner reliably confirm flame presence across very different fuel combustion characteristics, rather than being tuned to only one fuel type’s typical radiation signature.

Flame-failure response is programmable from 0.2 to 4 seconds, and the system is built on a fail-to-safe philosophy, so a scanner or signal fault drives the BMS toward a safe fuel-shutoff state rather than leaving the burner in an undefined condition during a detection failure.

Engineering Design of the SF810

The scanner carries an explosion-proof ATEX II 2GD T6 rating with an IP66/IP67 enclosure for direct mounting on burner fronts in classified hazardous areas, reflecting the reality that flame scanners are mounted directly on or near the combustion equipment they are monitoring rather than in a remote safe area. It communicates via 4-20 mA analog outputs and relays, with optional Modbus RTU or Profibus DP for integration into digital burner management architectures.

Separating the detector head from the remote flame amplifier unit (FAU810) allows the sensitive amplification electronics to be mounted away from the highest-temperature zone directly at the burner front, while the detector head itself is built to withstand that harsher thermal environment.

Key Features

  • Dual-wavelength UV/IR flame detection
  • Compatible with gas, oil, coal, lignite, and biomass fuels
  • Programmable flame-failure response, 0.2 to 4 seconds
  • Fail-to-safe design philosophy
  • ATEX II 2GD T6 explosion-proof rating
  • IP66/IP67 enclosure for burner-front mounting
  • 4-20 mA analog output plus relay outputs

Industrial Applications

The SF810 is used on industrial and utility boilers and furnaces to provide reliable flame-proving for combustion safety, supporting precise air-fuel control and helping plants avoid unsafe fuel-rich conditions across multiple fuel types. It is a standard component of burner management systems on power generation and heavy industrial combustion equipment where flame-out detection speed and reliability are safety-critical.

Across Oman, Muscat, Sohar, Salalah, and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supports power generation and industrial combustion operators as a trusted supplier of ABB Uvisor flame scanners, helping plants maintain reliable burner management and combustion safety systems.

Installing and Aligning the SF810

A flame scanner is only as good as its sight line. On a single-burner boiler the scanner looks at one flame, but on a multi-burner furnace it must be positioned so it sees the root of its own burner’s flame and not the fireball or the neighbouring burners. Poor discrimination is the most common reason a scanner keeps proving flame after its burner has tripped.

  • Aim the sight tube at the primary combustion zone near the burner throat, where the flame is most stable and its signal is strongest.
  • Provide clean, dry purge air to the sight tube so soot, ash and oil vapour do not build up on the lens and so the head stays cool.
  • Use a swivel mount during commissioning to find the best viewing angle, then lock it.
  • Run the signal cable between the detector head and the FAU810 amplifier away from ignition transformers and power cables.

Commissioning checks

With the burner firing across its turndown range, record the flame signal at minimum and maximum load. Then shut the burner down while adjacent burners keep firing and confirm the signal falls clearly below the flame-off threshold. Set the flame-on and flame-off thresholds with a comfortable margin between them and set the flame-failure response time to suit the BMS and the relevant combustion safety standard. Finally, prove the complete trip path from scanner to fuel shut-off valves.

Maintenance and Troubleshooting

  • Weak signal at high load: dirty lens, insufficient purge air or a sight tube partly blocked by deposits.
  • Nuisance trips at low fire: the scanner is looking at the outer, unstable part of the flame; re-aim toward the root.
  • Signal remains after the burner stops: the scanner sees adjacent flames or glowing refractory; improve the sight angle and review the thresholds.
  • Intermittent faults: check cable screening, terminations and the temperature at the detector head.

Include lens cleaning and a purge-air check in each planned outage, and log flame signal levels so a slow decline is spotted before it causes a trip.

Applications in Oman and the GCC

Across the region the SF810 fits utility and process boilers at power and water plants, fired heaters in refineries and petrochemical complexes, and package boilers in industry. Many of these units fire natural gas with liquid fuel as a backup, which makes a multi-fuel scanner useful. Summer heat and airborne dust make purge-air quality and head temperature especially important at outdoor burner fronts.
