Dräger Flame 2500 (IR3) Flame Detector

Description

Overview

The Dräger Flame 2500, also known as the IR3 model, is an explosion-proof triple infrared flame detector designed for hydrocarbon-based fires. Three infrared sensors in the unit watch the 4 to 5 micrometre band, which lets the detector recognise the radiation signature of burning fuel at long range while staying quiet when harmless heat sources are in view. Dräger specifies a typical response time of 5 seconds and a sensitivity range that reaches up to 65 metres for a 0.1 square metre n-heptane pan fire.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Dräger Flame 2500 to refineries, tank farms, offshore and onshore production facilities, power plants and industrial sites across Oman and the GCC. As a trusted supplier of Dräger fire and gas safety equipment, we provide engineering support in Muscat, including help with detector placement, field of view and the choice of output and enclosure options.

Triple IR Detection Principle

Flames emit characteristic infrared radiation, and burning hydrocarbons produce a strong emission around 4.3 micrometres from hot carbon dioxide. The Dräger Flame 2500 measures three separate infrared bands inside the 4 to 5 micrometre range and compares them against each other. Comparing the channels is the general approach triple IR detectors use to tell a real fire from a steady hot surface or a reflection, which is why they can suppress false alarms.

According to Dräger, the detector is immune to common interference sources such as welding work and hot CO2 emissions, and its sensitive detection prevents alarms from fires outside the intended area. The field of view is 100 degrees horizontally and 95 degrees vertically, and four selectable sensitivity settings let engineers match the detection distance to the hazard, from 15 metres at the lowest setting to 65 metres for a gasoline or n-heptane fire at the highest.

Engineering Design of the Dräger Flame 2500

The housing is made from SS316L stainless steel, with a heavy-duty copper-free aluminium option with red epoxy finish available on ATEX-approved versions. The enclosure measures about 101.6 x 117 x 157 mm, weighs 2.8 kg in stainless steel (1.3 kg in aluminium) and carries IP66, IP67 and NEMA 250 type 6P protection. Two cable entries are provided, either 3/4 inch NPT or M25 x 1.5 mm.

On the Dräger Flame 2500, the viewing window is heated to prevent icing and fogging, and the Built-in-Test (BIT) function checks the electronics and the optics automatically; a manual test can also be started. A tri-colour LED on the front gives quick status feedback: green for normal operation, yellow for a fault and red for a fire alarm. Outputs include a 0 to 20 mA stepped current signal, HART, an RS-485 Modbus link and alarm, fault and auxiliary relays, so the detector can feed a fire panel or a plant control system directly.

Industrial Applications

The Dräger Flame 2500 is suited to locations where hydrocarbon pool or spray fires are the main hazard: crude oil and fuel storage, loading racks, process units, compressor houses, helidecks and pipeline terminals. The sensitivity data of the Dräger Flame 2500 covers fuels including n-heptane, gasoline, diesel, kerosene, ethanol, methanol, isopropyl alcohol, methane and LPG, and polypropylene, which helps safety engineers prove coverage for the specific products stored or handled on site.

Seven Star LLC works with HSE teams and EPC contractors in Muscat, the Sohar and Salalah economic zones and across the GCC to review detector layouts, accessories and spare parts. The wide temperature range of the Dräger Flame 2500 suits exposed Omani sites, and accessories such as the weather cover, air shield, tilt mount and laser pointer simplify installation and commissioning where sand, dust or direct sun are expected.

About brand
Gas detection is the part of Dräger that plant safety teams meet first: a Polytron transmitter on a pipe rack, an X-am clipped to a coverall, a box of detector tubes in the permit office. The company was founded in Lübeck, Germany, in 1889. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Dräger fixed gas transmitters, flame detectors, portable gas detectors and Dräger-Tubes for sites in Oman, and checks each part number against the manufacturer's documentation.

Dräger gas detection product families listed here

Fixed detection is covered by the Polytron line: the Polytron 8100 EC for toxic gases and oxygen with electrochemical sensors, the Polytron 8200 CAT for flammable gases with a catalytic sensor, the Polytron 7000 and the PIR 7000 point infrared detector for hydrocarbons. Dräger flame detectors on this page are the Flame 1500 and Flame 2500 (triple infrared) and the Flame 2700 (multi-infrared). Portable instruments include the Pac 8000 single-gas detector, the X-am 2500 for one to four gases and the X-am 8000 for up to seven. Short-term colorimetric tubes such as Hydrogen Sulfide 100/a (CH29101) are listed with the analyzer accessories.

Where Dräger detectors are used

Polytron transmitters and PIR 7000 heads are found on wellhead and gathering facilities, gas plants, refineries, tank farms, LNG and petrochemical units, and in water treatment chlorine rooms. Portable Dräger gas detectors serve confined space entry, hot work permits and personal H2S monitoring, which is routine on sour fields in the GCC. Detector tubes remain a simple spot check where an electronic sensor is not available for the gas.

Ordering Dräger equipment: what we need

Dräger identifies most items by a seven-digit part number, such as 8101211, and that number is the most direct route to the right quotation. For a fixed transmitter, add the target gas, measuring range, output (4-20 mA, HART or relays), housing material, cable entry thread and the required hazardous-area approval. For portables, list the sensor configuration, pump or diffusion mode and the charger or calibration accessories needed. For tubes, give the gas and the range printed on the box.
