Overview

The Dräger PIR 7000 is an explosion-proof point gas detection transmitter that uses infrared (IR) technology to continuously monitor hydrocarbon gases in %LEL or ppm. Measurement Principle

The PIR 7000 builds on the success of the Dräger Polytron IR, the most stable point infrared gas detector worldwide, combining a maximum light-collecting construction with a 4-beam signal-stabilizing system. The total optical system uses no light beam split, simply a set of various reflectors, making this double-compensating, non-imaging optical design highly resistant to dust, fog, insects, and dirt accumulation on the optical surface.

Because the measuring signal is not affected by a partial beam block, the PIR 7000 fulfills demanding requirements for no false alarms, longer service intervals, and drift-free signal output. The detector comes standard with 3 embedded gases (methane, propane, ethylene) with capacity for up to 10 embedded gases, selectable from a library of over 80 available gases using Dräger Polysoft Premium software, with switching between target gases requiring no recalibration.

Engineering Design of the PIR 7000

The PIR 7000 operates from a 13 to 30VDC power supply across an extended operating temperature range of -40°F to +170.6°F, with IP66/67 ingress protection in a hermetically sealed stainless steel SS 316L enclosure measuring 6.3 x 3.5 x 3.5 inches and weighing 4.85 lbs. The measuring range can be freely adjusted between 0-350ppm and 0-100% LEL, enabling a wide variety of applications, and the device offers a configurable response mode allowing users to choose between “normal” or “high speed” response depending on the application.

The device is available with either M25 or 3/4-inch NPT cable entry and outputs a conventional 4-20mA analog signal with single cable multidrop capability via HART communication. Developed and manufactured according to SIL guidelines, the PIR 7000 not only meets but exceeds SIL 2 (IEC 61508) requirements, with continuous self-testing, no moving parts, resistance to shock and vibration up to 4G, and a typical lifetime greater than 15 years.
