AUMA TIGRON TR-M SIL Explosion-Proof SIL Actuator
Description
AUMA TIGRON TR-M SIL explosion-proof SIL actuator
The AUMA TIGRON TR-M SIL is the functional-safety version of the TIGRON compact actuator family. It is an explosion-proof electric actuator for open-close and modulating duty, with a torque range of 10 Nm to 1000 Nm, and it is aimed at valves that must reach a defined safe position when a plant shutdown is demanded. In the TIGRON TR-M SIL the safety function is handled by a safety-related software layer inside the actuator, so the emergency action does not depend on the normal control path. Seven Star LLC supplies AUMA actuators in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat; this page explains the TIGRON TR-M SIL so that you can prepare a precise enquiry.
Unlike a standard actuator that is later retrofitted with a safety relay, the TIGRON TR-M SIL is configured at device level. Up to four different safety functions can be defined for one unit and their priority can be set freely, which suits complex shutdown philosophies where, for example, an emergency-shutdown close must overrule a safe stop.

Safety functions of the TIGRON TR-M SIL
The functions certified for the TIGRON TR-M SIL are listed by the manufacturer as follows:
- Safe OPENING and Safe CLOSING (ESD)
- Safe OPENING and Safe CLOSING (ESD) with a timer function, intended to avoid pressure surges in the pipeline
- Safe STOP
- Safe end position feedback
The functions are rated for SIL 2 at hardware fault tolerance HFT=0 and systematic capability SC=3. Used with redundancy, the same functions can be applied up to SIL 3. Five SIL-assessed outputs are available. The type of seating can be chosen separately for the safe opening function, the safe closing function and the standard functions: forced limit seating, forced torque seating or no seating. Overload protection and a torque bypass can be switched on for safety operations when the valve design needs them.
How the TIGRON TR-M SIL works in service
In normal operation the actuator behaves like a standard TIGRON: the Combi-Switch combines limit and torque sensing, the position is tracked over up to 5,000 turns or strokes and torque is measured from 0 to 100 percent of the rated maximum. When a safety demand arrives, the safety-related software takes priority, executes the configured function with its own seating mode and torque handling, and reports the result through the SIL-assessed outputs. A handwheel remains available for manual operation when the actuator is de-energised and no safety demand is active.
The timer function deserves attention in liquid lines. Closing a large valve instantly after a trip can create a hydraulic shock; the timer spreads the closing action so that the shutdown stays safe for the pipe as well as for the process.
Where the TIGRON TR-M SIL fits in the plant
The TIGRON TR-M SIL is suited to isolation valves, emergency shutdown valves, burner and fuel gas valves and tank-farm valves where an explosion-proof area classification and a SIL requirement apply together. Because the housing is rated for ATEX, FM and IECEx marking in the hazardous areas listed above and the stated ambient range reaches from -63 °C to +70 °C, one unit can cover both cold-climate and hot desert installations. Related AUMA devices include the standard TIGRON TR-M, the TIGRON Fail Safe unit for high-torque spring-return duty and the SQEx and SAEx families with ACExC controls.
Selection checklist for TIGRON TR-M SIL
- Required safety functions and the SIL level demanded by the safety requirement specification
- Whether a single actuator (SIL 2) or a redundant arrangement (SIL 3) is intended
- Valve torque at opening, closing and seating, including the breakaway value after long standing
- Required seating type for the emergency action and the standard action
- Hazardous-area marking needed on site: ATEX zone, gas group, temperature class or FM class and division
- Fieldbus or analogue interface to the DCS and the number of SIL outputs to be wired
- Valve flange or attachment and stem type, and the required output speed
- Ambient minimum and maximum temperature and site corrosivity
Installation and commissioning of the TIGRON TR-M SIL
Mount the actuator on the valve in a de-energised state and align the output with the stem or the gearbox input. Commissioning uses the Commissioning Assistant and the six indication lights on the actuator, two of which can be assigned freely and whose colours can be programmed to match the plant convention. Safety parameters should be set and documented under the plant functional-safety procedure, and a proof test of the safety function should be planned together with the valve partial-stroke or full-stroke test. Low standby consumption, actuator and valve diagnostics and the plug-in electrical connection support predictive maintenance, because a unit can be disconnected and reconnected without disturbing the wiring.
Applications of the TIGRON TR-M SIL in Oman and the GCC
In Oman and the wider Gulf region, explosion-proof SIL actuators are typically specified for oil and gas wellhead and gathering facilities, gas processing, petrochemical units, power plant fuel systems and desalination plants with chemical dosing hazards. Heat, dust and humidity are standard site conditions. The IP68 enclosure, C5/CX corrosion class and the wide temperature range of the TIGRON TR-M SIL address these conditions, while the Profibus and Modbus interfaces allow integration into established control systems.

About brand
AUMA builds electric actuators for industrial valves, gates and dampers. The company was founded in 1964 near Stuttgart by Werner Riester and Rudolf Dinse, moved its headquarters to Müllheim in south-west Germany in the early 1970s, and still trades as the owner-managed AUMA Riester GmbH & Co. KG. Its actuators run isolation and control valves in water, power, oil and gas and process plants worldwide.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing AUMA multi-turn and part-turn actuators, actuator controls, gearboxes and spare parts for buyers in Oman and the GCC. We work from the nameplate data so that a replacement matches the installed actuator, controls and gearbox.

Where AUMA actuators are used
Water transmission and treatment is the largest use: pipeline isolation valves, pumping stations, desalination plants and sluice gates. AUMA actuators also run valves in power plant steam, feedwater and cooling systems, pipelines and tank farms, refineries and chemical plants, and on ships and offshore platforms. In the Gulf, check the ambient temperature rating, since actuators in direct sun can exceed 50 °C, and specify the enclosure protection for sand and humidity.
Ordering AUMA actuators and spare parts: what we need
For a replacement, send photos of the actuator, motor and controls nameplates: type designation, commission or order number, serial number and wiring diagram number. AUMA identifies the original build from the commission number. For a new actuator, add the valve type, required torque or thrust at the worst case, number of turns or swing angle, operating time, mounting flange to ISO 5210 or ISO 5211, stem or shaft dimensions, duty (open-close or modulating), supply voltage and frequency, control signals or fieldbus, and the hazardous-area marking required on site.

03How many safety functions can be configured?
Up to four safety functions can be configured per device, with freely defined priority. They include safe opening and closing, the same with a timer function, safe stop and safe end position feedback.
04What is the ambient temperature range?
The stated range is -63 °C to +70 °C with IP68 enclosure protection and C5/CX corrosion protection. Confirm the final marking on the nameplate of the supplied unit.
05Which explosion-protection markings apply?
The page lists ATEX Ex db eb h IIC T4 Gb and Ex h tb IIIC T130 °C Db, matching IECEx, plus FM Class I Division 1 Groups B, C, D and Class II/III Groups E, F, G. Check the exact certificate for your order.
