The JUMO variTRON 500 touch (type 705004) is a central processing unit with an integrated TFT color touchscreen for operation and visualization using CODESYS TargetVisu. Together with the JUMO input and output modules, including the controller module, it forms a complete automation system. The unit manages all configuration and parameter data of the system and offers a PLC according to IEC 61131-3 (CODESYS V3.5) with extra code 224.

The hardware platform uses an 800 MHz quad-core processor. The touchscreen is capacitive and comes in 7 inch and 10.1 inch sizes, each also with a stainless steel front. A hybrid user interface combines firmware screens and CODESYS visualization in one device, and a web cockpit allows access from a browser.

Visualization can also be given to commercially available panels that support CODESYS Remote TargetVisu or WebVisu, so one central unit can serve several operator stations. As of system version 9, a recorder app (extra code 276) shows process data as a live curve on the panel and on the web.

Order code and software options

The order code covers the screen variant (0 to 3), quad-core CPU, 1024 MB RAM, 8 GB eMMC, UPS option, version, LAN3 interface (00 or 08), wireless interface (00, 10 for 868.4 MHz or 20 for 915 MHz), the DC 24 V supply (36) and extra codes. An example in the data sheet is 705004/2-2-2-1-1-0-00-00-36/224,290.

Extra codes are 001 for the variTRON Program App with template, 224 for the CODESYS V3.5 PLC, 276 for the recorder app, 280 for CODESYS Remote TargetVisu, 281 for CODESYS WebVisu and 290 for the Remote TargetVisu required for visualization on the integrated panel. The CODESYS functions can be used free of charge for 30 minutes in demo mode.

Process data is held in the CPU and can be passed to JUMO smartWARE Evaluation, a fee-based license, for evaluation in dashboards and reports in PDF, Excel and CSV format. The unit also connects to the JUMO Cloud and to JUMO smartWARE SCADA.

JUMO standard functions for CODESYS are provided in libraries that can be integrated into the customer application, and function and visualization libraries are available as of system version 6. A setup program is used for configuration of the hardware and the JUMO modules.

Batch acquisition and process data logging are standard functions: up to 240 analog or digital channels can be logged in groups, each with its own memory cycle, and up to 20 batches can be recorded at once together with the event messages. Long-term storage and evaluation take place in the Datastore of smartWARE Evaluation.

System design and installation

Modules are mounted in two possible ways. In variant 1, a DIN rail accessory is fitted to the back cover of the CPU. In variant 2, the modules sit on a separate DIN rail. In both cases the connection to the CPU runs through a router module with a commercially available network cable, and the router module also supplies the module voltage.

Control loops run independently and do not draw resources from the central unit, so many loops can run at the same time. Thyristor power controllers can be linked by EtherCAT or PROFINET, and JUMO digiLine sensors for liquid analysis can be connected. The panel is for indoor installation in a cut-out in horizontal orientation, with a maximum panel thickness of 7 mm for plastic fronts and 8 mm for stainless steel fronts.

The data sheet includes oscillation limits of 0.15 mm amplitude from 10 to 58.1 Hz and 20 m/s2 from 58.1 to 150 Hz, and a shock rating of 150 m/s2 for 11 ms. The buffer battery is a CR2032 lithium cell with a typical life of 6 years, and a battery warning appears in the event list before it is empty.

Check the radio rules of your country before ordering the wireless version, since the 868.4 MHz option follows ETSI standards and the 915 MHz option follows FCC rules. A received signal strength value above -90 is needed for error-free transmission with a stationary transmitter.

JUMO is the German maker of temperature sensors, process controllers, pressure transmitters and liquid analysis instruments. Moritz Kurt Juchheim founded it in Fulda in 1948 as M. K. Juchheim KG, making glass thermometers with six employees. The name JUMO comes from the founder's name. It is still a family company headquartered in Fulda, and the parent company has been called JUMO GmbH & Co. KG since 2003.

Choosing a temperature sensor starts with the range and accuracy. A Pt100 RTD is accurate and stable from about -200 to 600 °C and is the usual choice in process plants. A thermocouple (type K or J, for example) covers much higher temperatures and responds faster but is less accurate. The wiring also matters: a 3-wire or 4-wire Pt100 connection cancels the resistance of the cable, while a 2-wire connection adds an error that grows with cable length. That is why a head-mounted transmitter is often fitted close to the sensor.
