Pilz PNOZ m B0 Configurable Safety Controller Base Unit
Overview
The Pilz PNOZ m B0 is the base unit of the PNOZmulti 2 configurable control system, a small safety controller that replaces a cabinet full of individual safety relays with one programmable device. The Pilz PNOZ m B0 provides 12 safe inputs, 8 configurable inputs/outputs, 4 safe semiconductor outputs and 4 configurable test pulse or auxiliary outputs. A backlit display and a rotary knob let technicians read diagnostics and navigate menus without a PC, while the logic itself is configured graphically in the PNOZmulti Configurator.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Pilz PNOZ m B0 to machine builders, panel builders and plant owners in the Sultanate of Oman and the wider GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. The Pilz PNOZ m B0 datasheet values are given in the operating manual attached to this page, which applies from product version 3.3 and covers connection, configuration and technical details, and our team can help assess how many inputs and outputs a project needs and which expansion modules to add.
Operating Principle
The Pilz PNOZ m B0 evaluates safety devices in a redundant, two-channel logic. Inputs such as emergency stop pushbuttons, two-hand pushbuttons, safety gate limit switches, light barriers, scanners, enabling switches, PSEN sensors and operating mode selector switches are connected to the safe inputs, and the logic configured in the PNOZmulti Configurator decides which of the four safe semiconductor outputs may stay switched on. Test pulse outputs monitor shorts across the inputs, and the unit also monitors shorts between the safety outputs.
The manual provides the safety characteristic data for each part of the chain. The two-channel logic is rated PL e Category 4 and SIL 3 with a PFHD of 4.74E-10 per hour, two-channel inputs reach PL e and SIL 3, and single-channel inputs reach PL d Category 2 and SIL 2. The mission time is 20 years. The processing time of the Pilz PNOZ m B0 is 30 ms, and the semiconductor outputs have a switch-off delay of 1 ms, so the reaction of the controller is short compared with the stopping time of most machinery. The final PL or SIL of a safety function depends on the complete loop and must be calculated for each application.
Engineering Design of the Pilz PNOZ m B0
The Pilz PNOZ m B0 is a 45 mm wide, 101.4 mm high and 120 mm deep unit that mounts horizontally on a 35 mm DIN rail and weighs 235 g. It is supplied with two terminators, and the connection terminals are plug-in, as screw or spring-loaded terminals ordered as accessories. A chip card with 8 kByte or 32 kByte memory can be used with the Pilz PNOZ m B0 to transfer project data, which helps when a unit is replaced, and a device security function protects the stored configuration.
The system supply of the Pilz PNOZ m B0 is 24 V DC with a tolerance of -20 % and +25 % and a continuous current requirement of 1.6 A, while the outputs are supplied separately with up to 8 A, protected by a 6 A and a 10 A circuit breaker respectively. Each of the four safe outputs switches 24 V at 2 A, is short-circuit proof and is electrically isolated from the system voltage with basic insulation. Cable runs may be up to 1 km per input. Expansion modules can be connected to the base unit, and the PNOZmulti System Expansion document referred to in the manual lists the modules and quantities that can be combined.
Key Features
The Pilz PNOZ m B0 brings programmable safety logic into a compact base unit. Its main capabilities include:
- 12 safe inputs for E-STOP, two-hand, safety gate, light barrier, scanner, enabling switch and PSEN devices.
- 4 safe semiconductor outputs, 24 V and 2 A each, rated up to PL e and SIL 3 depending on the application.
- 8 configurable inputs/outputs that can be used as safe inputs or auxiliary outputs.
- 4 configurable outputs usable as auxiliary outputs or test pulse outputs to detect shorts across inputs.
- Graphical configuration in the PNOZmulti Configurator, with a processing time of 30 ms.
- Backlit display and rotary knob for diagnostics, error messages and device information.
- Chip card for project transfer (8 kByte or 32 kByte) and device security for the stored configuration.
- Expansion modules can be connected, and plug-in screw or spring-loaded terminals are available as accessories.
Industrial Applications
A configurable safety controller such as the Pilz PNOZ m B0 suits machines and plants with several safety functions that interact: multi-zone guarding, muting of light grids, operating mode selection, enabling switches and two-hand controls. In Oman and the GCC that includes packaging lines, press and stamping equipment, robotic cells, crane and hoist systems, and process skids in Sohar, Duqm and Salalah. With the Pilz PNOZ m B0 one program replaces many relay wires, and a change of the safety logic becomes a configuration change documented in the PNOZmulti Configurator instead of a rewiring job.
Plants that want to compare safety architectures can also review the ABB AC500-S safety PLC, the HIMA HIQuad X safety PLC system and the Yokogawa ProSafe-RS safety instrumented system in our catalog, which are larger programmable safety systems. The Pilz manual is explicit that a risk assessment is required before use and that the safety function of the whole machine must be evaluated separately. Seven Star LLC can help count the safe inputs and outputs a project needs, select expansion modules and plan spare parts for the PNOZmulti 2 family.
