Emerson DeltaV™ PK Controller
Overview
The Emerson DeltaV PK Controller is a scalable distributed control system (DCS) controller built to handle everything from small standalone skids to large, complex process units within Emerson’s DeltaV automation platform. Offered in four capacity tiers — PK100, PK300, PK750, and PK1500 — the family lets engineers match controller capacity precisely to the I/O count of their application rather than over- or under-specifying a single fixed-size controller.
As part of the current DeltaV controller generation, the PK Controller is engineered for high-speed control loops, flexible native communications, and straightforward redundancy. Seven Star LLC supplies the Emerson DeltaV PK Controller as a trusted Emerson automation supplier to process and manufacturing facilities across Oman and the GCC.
Operating Principle
The PK Controller executes control modules at selectable rates from as fast as 25 milliseconds up to 60 seconds (25ms, 50ms, 100ms, 200ms, 500ms, 1s, 2s, 5s, 10s, 30s, 60s), letting engineers assign tight scan rates to fast-responding loops and slower rates to less time-critical ones within the same controller. It communicates over native Modbus TCP (server and client), EtherNet/IP (Class 1 and 3), PROFINET controller functionality (only when integrated into a DeltaV system, licensed separately), and OPC UA server capability, with additional protocols available through dedicated communication cards or Virtual I/O modules.
Engineering Design of the Emerson DeltaV PK Controller
The PK family scales from PK100 (100 device signal tags) up to PK1500 (1500 device signal tags), covering everything from a small skid to a substantial process unit from a single controller model line. Redundancy is achieved with a simple 1:1 configuration — installing a second controller directly adjacent to the primary unit on the same carrier, without extra cabinet space or reconfiguration effort. Configuration and HMI files are backed up to an SD card (SDHC 2.0, 2GB or 8GB), and the controller runs on +24VDC ±10% at up to 2.75A, providing +12.25VDC at up to 3.0A to connected I/O carriers, mounted upright on a horizontal DIN rail.

DeltaV PK Controller Ordering Codes
Emerson sells the PK Controller as complete assemblies rather than loose parts. The model number is built from the size and the redundancy choice: PK0100, PK0300, PK0750 or PK1500, followed by S for simplex or R for redundant. A simplex assembly contains one controller, one carrier, two IOPs, one power module and one power module blank cover. A redundant assembly contains two controllers, one carrier, two IOPs and two power modules. For example, PK0300R is a redundant 300 DST assembly and PK1500S is a simplex 1500 DST assembly.
A -B suffix (for example PK0750S-B) identifies assemblies for installations that do not use DeltaV traditional local I/O; these ship with two power module blank covers instead of power modules. Related hardware items are the 8 GB SD card for standalone controllers (PK7001S8), the M-series 4-wide I/O interface carrier with shield bar (PK4040E0C0) and the M-series to S-series carrier adapter (PK4059). When a standalone controller is merged into a DeltaV system, controller redundancy (VE31REDP) and the PROFINET interface (VE4108PS01) are separate licenses.
Protocol Rules to Check Before Ordering
Three protocol rules affect the architecture. Port P01 runs either the Modbus TCP client or the EtherNet/IP scanner, not both at the same time, while the Modbus TCP server and OPC UA server can run alongside. PROFINET is available only when the controller is integrated into a DeltaV system (v15.FP1 or later) and is not supported in standalone mode. The OPC UA server supports up to 6 concurrent sessions, 5,000 reads per second and 500 writes per second. For electronic marshalling, one PK Controller communicates with up to 16 CHARM I/O cards.
Emerson DeltaV PK Controller FAQ
What capacity tiers does the DeltaV PK Controller come in?
PK100, PK300, PK750 and PK1500, covering 100 to 1500 device signal tags (DSTs), so capacity can be matched to the application I/O count.
Which communication protocols are native?
Modbus TCP (server and client), EtherNet/IP (Class 1 and 3), PROFINET controller functionality and OPC UA server capability. Other protocols are available through dedicated communication cards or Virtual I/O modules.
How is redundancy achieved?
With a simple 1:1 configuration: a second controller of the same model is installed directly adjacent to the primary unit on the same carrier, with no extra cabinet space required.
What are the power and mounting requirements?
+24VDC +/-10% at up to 2.75A, providing +12.25VDC at up to 3.0A to connected I/O carriers. It mounts upright on a horizontal DIN rail, and configuration files back up to an SD card (SDHC 2.0, 2GB or 8GB).
How should I choose between PK100, PK300, PK750 and PK1500?
Count every hardwired I/O point and every field device signal the controller will own, add a growth allowance, decide on redundancy early, and check the scan rates the fastest loops need (25 ms up to 60 s are selectable).

Sizing a DeltaV PK Controller
Choosing between PK100, PK300, PK750 and PK1500 is essentially a count of device signal tags (DSTs), with sensible margin for later change. A practical approach:
- List every hardwired I/O point and every field device signal the controller will own, including signals arriving through Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP or PROFINET that will be used in control.
- Add a growth allowance for late design changes and future modifications; skids in particular tend to gain instruments between FAT and start-up.
- Decide on redundancy early. A redundant pair needs a second controller of the same model on the same carrier, so cabinet layout and power budget should include it from the start.
- Check the scan rates required by the fastest loops. Compressor anti-surge or pressure control may need a fast module execution rate, while tank farm and utility logic can run much slower.
Integration and Architecture
The PK Controller can run as a standalone controller on a package unit and later be brought into a full DeltaV system, which suits vendor skids that are built, tested and delivered before the main plant DCS is ready. The native Ethernet protocols listed above let it talk directly to drives, motor control centres, analysers and third-party PLCs without additional gateway hardware, and the OPC UA server gives a clean path to historians and plant information systems. When mixing protocols on one controller, segregate control-network traffic from third-party device traffic with proper network design and firewalls, in line with the site’s cybersecurity policy.
Commissioning and Maintenance Tips
- Keep the SD card backup current after each configuration download, and store a copy of the project database off the controller.
- Verify redundancy by performing a planned switchover during commissioning, with operations aware, rather than discovering a problem during a real failure.
- Check the 24 VDC supply under full load. Marginal power supplies are a common root cause of intermittent controller and I/O faults.
- Monitor controller free time and memory in the diagnostics. Loading close to the limit is a sign to move modules to slower scan rates or to another controller.
- Keep controller firmware aligned with the DeltaV version in use; confirm compatibility before installing a spare.
Applications in Oman and the GCC
Typical duties include wellhead and gathering station packages, gas compression and dehydration skids, chemical injection and metering packages, water and wastewater treatment units, and utility systems in refineries and petrochemical plants. The ability to deliver a skid with its own controller and integrate it into the main DeltaV system later is particularly useful on brownfield expansions.
