Overview

AUMA PROFOX-L is a compact smart linear actuator for globe valves and other linear-stroke valves, delivering thrusts from 0.8 kN up to 18 kN with variable speed and high control accuracy. It is built into a rugged metal housing for harsh service conditions and combines open-close and modulating duty, a choice of communication interfaces and configuration and diagnostic functions that normally require a much larger actuator. The AUMA PROFOX-L belongs to the PROFOX family of compact actuators from AUMA Riester and is offered in six sizes from PF-L2 to PF-L18, so a single platform covers small control valves up to medium-duty globe valves.

Working Principle of the AUMA PROFOX-L

The AUMA PROFOX-L converts the rotation of a brushless, variable-speed motor into linear thrust through an integrated spindle drive, which moves the valve stem with the force and speed required by the process. Soft start and soft stop protect the valve seat, and a spring-applied brake holds the position at standstill. Operating speeds from 0.1 to 2.5 mm per second can be selected in 13 levels at the time of order, depending on size, and fine-tuned in 1 % steps via Bluetooth after installation. Limit switching is via Hall sensors, and thrust switching uses electronic current measurement with tripping forces that are infinitely adjustable through the Bluetooth interface.

For modulating duty the actuator operates in class C, intermittent duty S4-50 % in accordance with ISO 22153, with up to 1,200 starts per hour, and for open-close duty in classes A and B at short-time duty S2-15 min. A “torque bypass” function can raise the thrust to 127 % for an adjustable period, helping to unseat blocked valves. Built-in diagnostics monitor temperature, key indicators for electronics, brake, gearbox and seals, and changes in the thrust required by the valve, with warnings passed to the DCS through digital outputs or fieldbus.

Engineering Design of the AUMA PROFOX-L

The six sizes PF-L2, L3, L6, L10, L15 and L18 offer maximum thrusts of 2, 3.5, 6, 10, 15 and 18 kN with minimum tripping forces of 0.8 to 7.2 kN, modulating thrusts of 1 to 9 kN and stem strokes of 60 mm (PF-L2 to L6) or 80 mm (PF-L10 to L18). Valve attachment follows ISO 5210 with flange F05 or F07, with an attachment frame for up to four pillars as an option, and couplings with internal threads from M8 to M20 are available. Weights are about 8 kg for the PF-L2 to L6 and 10 kg for the larger sizes.

The metal housing is rated for enclosure protection IP67, with IP68 as an option, and AUMA states corrosion protection of C5-M or C5-I for harsh environments. The ambient temperature range is –30 °C to +70 °C, with –40 °C to +60 °C as an option, and an optional heating element protects against condensation. The standard power supply is 100 to 240 V single-phase AC, with 24 V DC, 180 to 300 V DC and 380 to 480 V three-phase AC options, and standby consumption is below 3 W. Cable entries are three M20 x 1.5 threads with spring clamp terminals inside.
