AUMA SGC-SGCR Compact Aluminium Part-Turn Actuator
Overview
The AUMA SGC-SGCR is the “small” electric part-turn actuator range with integral controls. All parameters are set directly at the actuator, and the integral controls contain the switchgear, the power supply unit and the interface to the DCS. The controls switch the actuator off automatically once the valve end position is reached, when motor overheating is detected or when a torque overload has occurred. All housing parts are made of aluminium, which keeps the weight very low, and the torque range of 25 Nm to 1,000 Nm covers compact butterfly, ball and plug valves and small to medium dampers and process valves.
The designation tells the duty class. The SGC actuators are designed for open-close duty and positioning duty (classes A and B, short-time duty S2 – 15 min), and the SGCR actuators for modulating duty, class C, S4 – 40 %. In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC proudly supplies the AUMA SGC-SGCR to water, HVAC, industrial and process customers in the Sultanate of Oman and across the GCC, and we help engineers choose between this lightweight range, the bronze SGM series and the larger SQ family.
Operating Principle
The AUMA SGC-SGCR uses a brushless, variable-speed motor with a compact gear stage to produce a quarter-turn output, with an operating time for 90 degrees of 4 s to 90 s and a swing angle of 82 to 98 degrees. Limit and torque seating determine the end positions, and a handwheel provides manual operation. Because the speed is electronically controlled, starting and stopping are gentle on the valve, and the speed can be set to match the application, whether the priority is a quick close or a slow, surge-free movement.
Integral controls are the key to the concept: instead of an external control cabinet and its wiring, the switchgear and electronics are inside the actuator, so the installer connects power and the DCS signals directly. For positioning, the AUMA SGC-SGCR offers a position feedback signal of 4 – 20 mA or via a fieldbus interface, and the SGCR variant is sized for the frequent starts of modulating duty. Settings are made on the device itself, which shortens commissioning, and local controls can be provided separately from the actuator when it is installed in a hard-to-reach position.
Engineering Design of the AUMA SGC-SGCR
The aluminium housing of the AUMA SGC-SGCR is light, which matters on valves that carry the actuator on a bracket or on small pipework, and the aluminium is protected with the KS corrosion protection system. Enclosure protection is IP68 and the ambient temperature range is −25 °C to +70 °C. AUMA lists high shock resistance among the service-condition features, which suits vibrating installations. Dimension sheets cover SGC 04.1 to SGC 10.1 together with SVC 05.1 to SVC 07.5, and SGC 12.1 and SGCR 12.1 as a separate larger size.
The interface package includes control inputs for different voltages (DC and AC), potential-free output contacts for status signalling and a fieldbus interface. Electrical data sheets are available for the SGC and SGCR 04.1 to 12.1 range with controls for 115 V and 230 V at 50 or 60 Hz. The option of local controls separated from the actuator means the AUMA SGC-SGCR can be installed where there is limited space and operated from a convenient location.
Key Features
The AUMA SGC-SGCR combines low weight, integral controls and variable speed. Its main features are as follows.
- Torque range of 25 Nm to 1,000 Nm for compact and medium-sized quarter-turn valves.
- SGC for open-close and positioning duty (classes A and B, S2 – 15 min) and SGCR for modulating duty, class C, S4 – 40 %.
- Aluminium housing for very low weight, with KS corrosion protection.
- Integral controls with switchgear, power supply unit and DCS interface, set directly at the actuator.
- Brushless, variable-speed motor with limit and torque seating and operating times of 4 s to 90 s.
- Position feedback signal of 4 – 20 mA or via fieldbus interface.
- Control inputs for different voltages (DC and AC) and potential-free output contacts for status signalling.
- IP68 enclosure protection, high shock resistance and a handwheel for manual operation, with optional separate local controls.
Industrial Applications
The AUMA SGC-SGCR suits automation tasks where weight, wiring effort and cost per valve matter: HVAC and chilled-water butterfly valves, small water treatment valves, process and utility lines in industrial plants, air and flue gas dampers and packaged skids. The integral controls mean each valve is a self-contained unit that needs only power and a signal, which simplifies installation in buildings, desalination trains and utility corridors where long cable runs to a control cabinet would be expensive. The SGCR version handles continuous regulation for flow, temperature or pressure loops.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the AUMA SGC-SGCR for projects across the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC, from commercial construction in Muscat to industrial sites in Sohar and Salalah. Customers who need seawater resistance can look at the AUMA SGM-SGMR, which shares the design principle with a bronze housing, and those who need hazardous-area approval can consider the AUMA PROFOX-QX or SQ Ex ranges. Related AUMA products worth comparing with the AUMA SGC-SGCR include the AUMA SGM-SGMR, the AUMA SG2+MEC and the AUMA SQ part-turn actuator, which cover neighbouring duty types and sizes.

AUMA actuator and gearbox types
SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line.
